PSA: Landing Lane bridge closed for emergency repairs until mid November (to Open Dec. 17)

this is a recent one that's causing huge problems

This one was a huge deal, given that the crack was actually around a 3-4 inch gap with major displacement. They went back 4-5 years and found evidence that the beam started cracking back then. The bridge is supposed to be inspected visually on-site every 2 years. They, of course, fired the inspector, BUT......a bridge that size needs not only a team to do the inspection, but a supervisory team to review the results. That's standard practice. But the authority in charge scapegoated the lone person who was tasked with doing this.

I am working about 25 ft from this bridge every day this summer, taking groups of kids fishing in the canal for PLAYS.A.F.E. which is New Brunswick's free summer camp for kids 6-12. The walking path is open, as is the tow path along the canal. They crews have been working their tails off reparing the deck of the bridge. I would be highly surprised if it wasn't open by the first game.

I can remember when there was a house on the tow path. At one time the bridge was a draw bridge, that was raise for canal travel. The bridge tender live in the house. Even though it wasn’t a draw bridge when I remember, there was still a family living in the house.

What was Abe Lincoln like?

(LOL)

Is this bridge a historical landmark?
The bridge is not listed on the register for historic places, but the D&R Canal is listed as a historic district. With the swing span (not a draw bridge), the design would be considered a contributing feature to the canal's history and hence the replacement will be at the mercy of the State Historic Preservation Office.

When I first arrived at Rutgers in 1971-1972, perhaps on my pre-enrollment tour, the road bed of the bridge was wood. I think it got washed out after a period of heavy/rains/flooding on the banks of the old Raritan--one of the reasons for that reconstruction.

Just to understand, are you saying that pedestrians will be able to cross the bridge (and thus, to cross the river at that point) even during the six week construction? That would make a big difference for the game. Usually that bridge carries heavy pedestrian traffic before and after games.

Yes. I am stand on the pedestrian walk way right now. They put up a cloth barrier between the construction and the walkway. Here are some pics from today.

So this photo confirms that bridge undergoing emergency repairs is the very old iron bridge over the canal. It is not the Landing Lane Bridge across the Raritan River that was built c.1995.
Many misleading posts in this thread.

I've always thought the old iron bridge was the Landing Lane bridge and the one for route 18 was the Rt. 18 bridge. Am I mistaken?

Yes I was confusing the 80s construction of the Rt 18 bridge with the 95-ish Landing Lane Bridge. My mistake.

But I also always assumed both the Iron bridge and the '95 part were both the Landing Lane bridge.

Yeah I just checked and the Rt 18 bridge is the Lynch bridge. The Landing Lane bridge is the old iron one that is located on... Landing Lane. At least per my memory and google maps.
Landing Lane Bridge is actually 2 bridges on Landing Lane. The one that crosses the canal, which is old and the one being fixed. And the one that crosses the river. Which is newer. Some one here speculated that was the bridge being fixed.

Yeah you got my quote before my edit.

Well, I didn’t know that was actually Franklin and not New Brunswick . The Franklin police should try to get the OT to man that bridge on gamedays . I always see NBPD at that post

Not to be a stick in the mud but I have always known the bridge going over the canal as "The Landing Lane Bridge" The Route 18 Bridge which carries Route 18 I have always known as the "Route 18 Bridge". These are not official names but Local names that whenever I have been talking to someone about said Bridges they acknowledge that they understand which bridge I am talking about.

You are correct in your names for the two bridges. Mind you, these are the local names for these bridges. The state may have official names for these bridges that differ but this is how I communicate with people from the area about which bridge I am talking about. Landing Lane bridge is the old cast iron bridge that carries the most northern part of George St. and Landing Lane across the canal towards river road in piscataway. The Route 18 Bridge is the large bridge that carries Route 18 across the Raritan. Route 27 bridge, alternatively known as the Albany St. bridge connects New Brunswick with Highland Park across the Raritan. This is how locals describe these bridges and I have never had any problem interpreting which bridge they are talking about….up to now!

just kidding...........

.......of course not.

Unions = Overtime = Cha-Ching $$$$. They always find another problem it's in the Union handbook, extras are worth triple the money. They can't say NO or rebid. They always bid to be lowest bidder with the understanding they'll find something else wrong.

I have a bridge by me @HeavenUniv. knows all about it. It's literally 25 feet long. We're now going on month 8 of it's repair. They should have been able to build an entirely new one twice by now.

The Landing Lane Bridge carries Landing Lane across the river from Piscataway to New Brunswick. Landing Lane continues up the hill to Easton Avenue at Franklin Blvd.. The "Landing Lane Bridge" is actually two bridges One across the river (was the old iron truss bridge that was replaced not too long ago), and a smaller iron bridge that crosses the D&R Canal. My understanding is that this construction is on the smaller bridge that crosses the D&R Canal.

The John Lynch Bridge carries Route 18 across the river. This is, I think, you are calling the Route 18 bridge.

The Albany Street bridge carries Albany Street across the river from NB to Raritan Ave. in Highland Park.

granted, I'm old... and frankly haven't been over Landing Lane in 20 years... but, sure, I know there were always TWO separate components to the landing lane bridge (the old one and the REALLY old one)... but, never actually considered them "separate"... if one part was closed..the entire "bridge" was closed...

No worries.
I was responding to posts that implied that the "new bridge" (c.1995) had the problem.

The bridge that carries Route 18 across the Raritan River is named the John A. Lynch Sr. Memorial Bridge.Listing of all bridges crossing the Raritan River.
Not to argue with this official name of this bridge. But if someone used the John lynch bridge I would have no idea what they are talking about. Route 18 bridge, yes. Try 27/Albany street bridge, yes; Landing Lane Bridge, yes! Local names matter.
