Football Rutgers staves off mistake-prone Washington 21-18 at home

I think they should’ve been ready with a play to go. I agree with the announcers. Yes it is important to get it right but getting both plays off before the two minute warning is important. Frankly getting the 4th down snapped quickly might help them convert too if it catches the defense not ready.
What I think probably happened is, they sent in a play they had queued up. But then they and the QB saw something they didn’t like with RU’s personnel, package or early lineup. So they decided to make sure they got the right call.

And it worked out for them. They scored and got themselves a good chance to tie things up. Thankfully, their kicker had a bad night.

In the past, we have been on the short end of the stick in games like this, nice to come out with a win. And the team gets an extra day of rest before Nebraska.

Don’t think they quite get to top 25, but think they get close. Win at Nebraska and they’re top 25 for sure.
Agreed. We are finding ways to win games, but not exactly looking very top 25 while doing it. Beat Nebraska away, even in a close game, and I think being 5-0 with two conference wins, including against last year’s championship runner up, should get a top 25 slot.

We won, that is all I can say on the plus side. This defense couldn't even give us a minute reprieve.
Yes. Very disappointed with our senior heavy defense. We even have decent DL depth to work with. Something is off with all of them and the Toure answer is BS. The DL alone could be better but I really am questioning the quality of the DE and DT coaches. Harisymiak needs to get this turned around or hand off D playcalling to Greg.

True. OTOH, I also think they outplayed us and probably would’ve won if not for all the penalties.

I don’t think the D was all that bad. Let’s not forget this was a very talented team with an excellent QB and OL, and a good RB, and pretty good WRs. They were gonna be able to score points and move the ball.

But this was supposed to be our best D. Almost everyone but Max back. Depth at key positions. Lewis and Hamilton have had moments. Rogers has been solid. But not much more. They have taken a step back from last year it seems.

Thank goodness we now have a functioning Offense. Tough to run with 8 in the box regularly but we are loosing up there. I have more confidence in our Offense, which is a 180 from last December.

Exactly! I never thought we would be a team that had to out score teams, like the Air Coryell Chargers. For all the good press the defense has gotten coaches and players, this is ridiculous. Washington is a good team, but tonight like last week, should have been a comfortable win.

It’s very rare where you’ll see a perfect game.

You’re gonna make plays you’re gonna miss plays. Hopefully you make more than you miss and hopefully the reverse for the other team lol.
It's been said that football games are more often lost than won.

We were clearly outplayed, but we did nothing to lose the game. And we did not.

UW clearly outplayed us, but did plenty to lose the game. And they did.

Well Miami didn’t look top 10 tonight against VT so who knows.

I won’t even kill them for it like I think others will. All teams have these games at times over a season, even UGA this year against UK and in their championship year against Mizzou. Alabama last year against USF.

It happens but pulling out the win while not looking great still means something.

Why does it ALWAYS need to be so stressful?
I think you may have to get used to the stress. RU does not have an offense that is likely going to put up 40 on the scoreboard and blow teams out. If we score 20-27 points then we might have some more stressful wins. But that’s not a bad thing. Schiano’s strategy and path to a win is run the ball, play disciplined football with as little mistakes as possible in all phases of the game. I counted 7 huge mistakes by Washington tonight: 1) 3 different 15 yard penalties, some that killed their drives or kept Rutgers drives going; 2) 2 missed makeable FGs; 6) Dude runs on the field from the bench for a penalty after a blocked FG that leads to Rutgers TD; 7) Washington stopped at the two yard on 4th down and passed on 3rd and 4th downs when RU was being gashed by Coleman. Rutgers made very few mistakes tonight, mainly poor tackling was the biggest one for them. In the game of mistake free football, Rutgers destroyed Washington in that department. Greg and staff are going to always have the team that may get beat by their opponent, but they won’t be a team that beats themselves. It proved true tonight. We may have some more of these type of wins but I am okay with that as I know it’s part of Greg’s big picture and coaching.

I think the D will be okay. I think it’ll get better as the previously injured players get more game time under their belts. We saw some great plays by the D tonight, but some mistakes too. I think the mistakes will be go away as we get deeper into the season, and the D will become more consistent.

I didn’t think it was that bad either. Lot of complaints about missed tackles but I also saw some good hard tackles including quite a few open field ones. It can’t be perfect all the time against capable teams.

We scored 21 points which is what most experts predicted would be close to the total so hard to say we under achieved offensively. But the O was not crisp overall with predictable run plays and dropped passes. I'll take the W but I felt Washington lost this game more than RU won it. Still feels great. Tremendous night at the stadium too. Great experience and RU really pulled out all the stops for the boardwalk and the in game entertainment.

Go Braves :)
Braves have no right to get nto the playoffs this season. Playing with house $.

If the Mets choke it away to this braves team, it would be a very Mets thing to do.
That's an interestng take since the Mets wrre supposedly punting on the season

Also, we will not see a more explosive offense the rest of the way. To hold them to less than 20 points is on par to holding Michigan to 31, PSU to 27, and Ohio State to 35 last year. At no time did any of those teams feel completely in control. It's the same they say about Pike's BB games, make it a rock fight and those who are uneasy show they true colors.

This.
Washington played for the NC last year.
We did fine tonight.

As the replay showed on the first pass of the last series, their receiver's knee was down before going out of bounds and the clock should have still run.
Lots for the defense to work on including - defending against the 2 point attempts- between tonight and VT- that was 3 two pointers we gave up.
In a row

Disagree. We punted 7 times and they punted 2 times. This is not because we were winning and conservative. It’s because we couldn’t stop them and they stifled us repeatedly. They almost moved the ball at will the entire game.

They lost because of 1) the stupid two passes on 3rd and goal from the two when they were overpowering us running the ball all game and 2) the missed FGs. 13 points they should have scored.

Yes, the missed FGs were big for them if your going to isolate specific plays that resulted in missed points and reflect directly on the 3 point end of game MOV.

I made a different point. As a coach, your thinking is different (and should be) regarding in game play calling when your the team riding a lead vs. having to come back from a deficit. While nursing 11 point second half leads, we attempted only what , maybe 2 passes? And Athan wisely took a sack to avoid a bad throw. You can criticize conservatism from Greg on other days but on a rainy day, at home in the situation we were in, this was the correct strategy at those points even with Washington’s solid DL because the clock was our friend. Outside of Kyle’s big 40 yard break through run (where he broke like 6 tackles), we netted 7 total yards across the 3 drives where we were in that situation and chose not to go for it on 4th and 1 in Washington territory on one of them. Again - because we had a 2 score second half lead. Then on our last possession, we chose to deploy the same strategy of keeping it on the ground even though Washington was stacking 10. Why? There was 1:40 on the clock and we had a lead. The weather was bad and with a wet slippery ball Greg knew there was a risk of incompletions even on perfect passes which would stop the clock. We had already dropped several perfect passes in the game. So despite knowing they’d stack 10 we basically chose the equivalent of taking a knee to eat down the clock.

Meanwhile - on the other end of the spectrum - Washington was playing from behind and forced to make aggressive decisions including going for it on 4th and long FG attempt at the end. Credit them for not turning it over and executing a lot of those bigger yardage attempts outside the red zone which resulted in them accumulating a ton of net yards. However - the point still stands that we really don’t know how many yards RU would’ve collected if we were playing from behind or even with a tie. When VT tied it - we followed with a 68 yard drive because we threw the football.

Don’t think they quite get to top 25, but think they get close. Win at Nebraska and they’re top 25 for sure.
Thinking maybe the TV gods want to see ranked vs ranked for Rutgers at Nebraska. Otherwise I'd agree.. and I'd prefer not being ranked... but a ranked vs ranked game next week could be nice.

They don't give Super Bowl rings for yardage and I don't think Brady/Belichick would give back their first one anyway.

Put more concisely:

We played over 20 second half minutes of this game with an 11 point lead.

Washington collected 279 yards during that stretch of time vs our 7 net yards (plus the super Kyle run)
On other days you can debate Greg’s conservatism until your face is blue. In the rain against the team we were facing, keeping the ball on the ground was the correct strategy. Win or lose in the end.

Tyreek was a beast last night. We wouldn’t have won without him. So happy to have him back.

nope. never in the history of football was 279/7 over any stretch of a game ‘intelligent coaching’. I’m not criticizing GS at all. The team was mostly outplayed and incredibly lucky to win. No pity for UW here. They utterly blew the game they mostly dominated. But the yardage dont show good coaching in any way. Not bad coaching either. The other team was just more talented and played better, yet lost on its own accord.

We left a lot of points on the table versus VTech too. It happens, that’s football. All that anyone will remember is the W. Let’s take it and move on.

It’s the “Nebraska season” now..😉
