APP: Jeff Towers: Rutgers boosters firmly behind Kyle Flood

der: I would think that at his current age and station in life, legacy has probably overtaken money on his priority list. He's already secured his and his family's futures -- but does he want to achieve immortality? His best shot at that is right here.

+1

Let's see what Tower and these other "Everything is Wonderful" fans say after a nice 3-9 season.

Same thing for Hamilton backing Flood. I love the kid...his heart, passion and loyalty...but he's not going to be the one out on the field getting drubbed every week now that he's sidelined for the season. I'm sure he'd feel much differently about the head coach position at Rutgers in November if he was actually playing in some of the beat downs we are about to absorb. No one wants to be put in a position where they cannot succeed and Darius is not exempt from that.

Why choose a photo of halftime during a game where it was pouring rain, and not post a picture of the student section during the Penn State and Michigan games? I guess you felt the need to take the same slanted approach as the Star Ledger.

I believe the point he was trying to make is this is what will happen in blowout losses and that is what we are looking at if HCKF doesn't start coaching this team up.

Schiano would likely cost in the range of $3 mil per year for his salary alone. Not sure how you classify that as "cheap" for 6-7 wins.
ATTENTION ATTENTION! 6-7 wins in the future will be the best we do. PENN STATE AND MICHIGAN HAS MOVED TO THE NEXT LEVEL WHICH MEANS 4 LOSES EVERY YEAR. THAT MEANS WE HAVE TO WIN ALL OTHER GAMES FOR 8 WINS. THE PROBLEM IS FLOOD WILL GET US TO 3-5 WINS EVERY YEAR.

Firing Flood may set back the school who played the first fball game PERMANENTLY???

Good Lord. Maybe the most outlandish statement I've seen in legitimate print in a while.

A guy with no connections to RU, but only to the current fball caretaker, who put up money ONLY to insure that his guy was kept and extended (and who puts up anything otherwise???) wants to tell us what is in RU's long term interest. No thanks.

To me, this close confidante and his judgment shows something about Flood. Surprised we don't hear more about that frankly.

I can see what Towers is saying in this sense...Graber got us off to a similar start in the Big East as Flood did last year in the Big Ten and Grabes probably got sent packing prematurely and his replacement took things from mediocre to God-awful. So there is some trepidation if we relieve Flood of his duties at this time as to what direction we head in. That said, the fact that Greg is still out there and two of the names I've heard Julie fancies over the past couple of years are Dan Mullen and Tom Herman so I think she has an eye for talent if she wants to put her stamp on this program. Not saying we are going to get either but she already supposedly made a play for Mullen which tells me that not only does she have a vision but she has the balls to go for what she wants if the money is there.
There is something in common between the Graber and Flood coaching eras, but it is not what you think.

Graber recruited a lot of talented players who were academic risks and built a decent team out of them. There was the window of opportunity with the 1992 7-4 team to make a bowl game and develop recruiting momentum that could have led to sustained success. Unfortunately, that did not happen in 1992 and after three more years of 4-7, 5-5-1 and 4-7 Graber was fired, and it was by no means premature. Anyone watching in 1995 saw this was a team going downhill fast.

Flood had TWO windows which could have developed momentum and given him a chance at long term success. Making a BCS bowl in 2012 or keeping that recruiting class together a year later could have led to sustained success. Neither happened, and most people not invested in defending Flood at all costs can see that the downward trajectory has started.

What Jeff doesn't seem to understand is what Flood did with his end around the rules has gotten even professors who support the program upset. Jeff needs to understand that if the Professors etc are more powerful than him, RU might be forced to fire Flood. He needs to take that possibility into account and have a contingency plan.

I suppose a positive spin on this article would be to say that some people in high places are feeling the heat from flood's hot seat and feel the need to counter it. That gives me a little hope...but only a little.
I like the way you think! :)

Bullshit. I'll bet you a dozen glazed donuts that the next HC - IF he's got any recruiting skills at all - recruits Jersey better than Flood by his 2nd season.

Nuts: I think der was agreeing with the PSU poster, in that keeping Flood as HC is making it all too easy for PSU and other top B1G to come in and cherry-pick NJ recruits that RU would want

Yes I was. It pains me every time my PSU co-worker comes in talking about how they just picked up some other Jersey recruit and all I can say is - well one day you wont have Kyle Flood to kick around.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh LOL my bad then YES, I agree, it WILL keep it easier for them to recruit NJ!

The point being discussed in this post is if Schiano will come cheaply or not. Unsure how your post fits into this.

I think his point is that even if we had a great coach we would only expect 6-7, so if thats what Schiano gets us, its fine becuase we can't expect any better. Loser talk.

People who disagree with him should donate enough money to have their opinion matter more than his.

Problem solved.
If we had strong leadership it wouldnt matter. Of course we dont, so we will take the advice of the guys with the biggest checks, as if that makes them at all qualified to pick FB coaches.

This Dan Mullen? AL.com: Mississippi State's Dan Mullen joins SEC's $4 million club with raise, contract extension

How did Pitt make out after Wannstedt? - Maryland after Fridge? PSU?, Syracuse?, Uconn?
People forget how hard it is to get a coaching change right. Rutgers is in financial safe mode until we are a year or two into a fill share of B10 proceeds. Not many people expected winning seasons for RU early in the B1G - last year exceeded expectations. This year is on track to 'normal for now'. We had Fridge and 4th year Nova as the difference makers last year, vs a 1st year OC and a new QB. Then you add the loss of the defensive players, which I see as an off the charts anomaly for this program. The current recruiting class is solid and is ranked #35. We have 2 QB's that look surprisingly good, with more on the bench and on the way, and a top RB group. The defense will get better as the season goes on.

Its great to have high expectations for the program. I understand people being upset, disappointed, impatient, yada yada yada, but I don't see the big decision makers sending Flood away any time soon. No need to fuel the haters stirred up by the bloggers who work for institutions that were once proud and useful.

1) We don't have strong leadership
2) Welcome to the real world. People with money have influence.

Let's see what he's actually donated, other than a guarantee of a termination payment, before we start naming buildings in the football complex after him.

They don't need to do that. They can vote with their feet.

Exactly.

Average 10,000 less people per game and do the math. He would need to donate several million per year to cover that.

THis is a guy who didn't have the juice to land a Recruiting Coordinator position. And judging by his comments in that article, thank God for that...

It is significant that the article only quoted one booster. Where were the other ones? Too busy toasting coach fludd with champagne to answer some questions over the phone or via e mail?

Which of course will surely help in raising revenues to hire a new coach.

No different than pro sports.

Hundred of thousands of Mets fans can't go buy the team. But they stopped going until ownership took steps to point the franchise is a direction the fans agreed with.

It is inarguable that there will be thousands more empty seats next year if Elmer is on the sideline--ain't nothing Towers can say or do about that.

Empty seats or not, which is certainly debatable at least for some of the games with who we have coming in, won't really matter to this administration.

They won't bring in a suitable P5 winning coach and associated salary. Their strategy is clear at this point.

Tread water until the real B1G money comes in, continue lowering the subsidy until then. This is their idea of winning.

I was going to point this out as well. Poor journalism to not try to at least contact another donor to verify.

This is nothing more than a puff piece, complete with all the clickable links to increase page views

Whatever the impact on revenue it's an undeniable fact that bad football will keep people away, and hopefully before long those who agree with this numbnuts that getting rid of flood would set the program back permanently will have to write bigger checks or be brushed aside.
