B1G - expansion candidates

There is no B1G as we know it without OSU, period, if they jump ship the value of the conference diminishes exponentially. Have to believe the SEC and their media partners will leave no stone unturned to lure them away along with Michigan. But the key is OSU, Michigan and any other combination of another school or two leaving would not have the same affect as OSU. I think we are entering some very uncertain times.

Interesting, and possibly scary, what Nicole Auerbach said today in the Athletic reportedly. I don't get it, but heard about on sports talk radio. The SEC plans to expand into the 30's, breakaway, and create a mini NFL with a payroll. Any truth, who really knows, that said, the BIG has to smartly go huge here. It is too risky to do anything else.
I have been saying this since the Texas OU story broke. That's why the Kansas and Iowa State talk is so ridiculous. Very old world thinking

I can see that, but I also believe people making big deals like this hate uncertainty, and there is no way of predicting how long the GOR question would take to be resolved in the courts and free a school.
Yup. Can't be broken is far less relevant than ones tolerance to engage in a long drawn out and likely expensive fight to try and break it. I don't see a long list of schools lining up to take on that fight on their own, given the uncertainty and potentially significant downside risk involved if they lose. Even 'winning' might be too painful to attempt

So true. Let us not forget all of this happened after NIL. Everything connects in this. Right now Disney is playing PAC-MAN! Sorry if I offend anyone, not my intention, but neither KU or ISU moves the needle. If making a play for ACC schools, including ND is not the plan, we need to raid the PAC-12, and land at least 1 school in Texas for long-term security.

WVU to the B1G is beyond dumb. Never happening
where in the tweet does he say WVU to the BIG? The BIG would never take them anyway but certainly not as a stand alone FB member. I don’t know where he thinks WVU could find a home for their FB team, and he doesn’t either since he didn’t make any suggestion.

agree

I said earlier I'd be talking to A&M, ND, USC/UCLA and either UNC or Oregon/Berk/Stanford

Sorry, misread that. Thought it said B1G. NM.

I love it. We need to factor in recruiting, IMO. Ideally we could secure ACC schools, even with the GOR. The 3 top recruiting states are California, Texas, and Florida. While I would like at least 1 school in all 3 states, I would settle for 2. We need natural resources. The most important to this is recruiting.
Now could a national conference work? I say yes. While no one cares in this, about non-revenue sports, I do. My solution, is to secure a place in the middle of the country to play or compete. This way it is a shared expense. Hold your tournament, or games, like the covid events. I think we are being pushed here by Disney/ESPN.

No problem, but I do agree with you completely that the BIG would never take WVU, especially as a lone fb member. Personally I think Kratch is reaching with this tweet. It is not as if WVU’s FB team or athletic situation is similar to UCONN.

Since when is FSU good academically?
More recent - large emphasis has been put on obtaining co-flagship status with UF and improving academics across the board.

USNWR has them as the # 19 rated public school in the US. I believe UF is top 10.

Not on the level of UVA, Michigan, Cal, UF, etc. but making steady progress up

The B1G has to do whatever is necessary to keep OSU and UM in the fold. If that means going big, so be it. If that means adding the right two teams, so be it.

Agreed. At this point the PAC 12 and B1G are best served with a tight alliance short of a merger to lock up all media markets coast to coast sans the Southeast and Texas.

Think about it like this. You are playing monopoly and there are only so many Board Walk's and Park Place's available. Get them while you can, otherwise you may be left stuck picking from the less desirables. The SEC has already started taking its pick with Texas and Oklahoma and will continue to do so. The B1G can't wait forever to do something. Start by raiding the Pac 12 and then figure out how to take the best of the ACC in a second phase later, as they are more complicated due to their GOR.
