The point about Cano is a good one. When you give (or assume) a long term contract, you do so with the knowledge that you probably won't get fair value out of the tail end of the contract. It's a cost of doing business. You have to be prepared to eat those last couple of years if need be. Problem is, that's not the Wilpons' style.

Bonilla, Cespedes, Cano. They should proceed with caution on the next huge contract.

We were not getting Diaz without taking back Cano. Trade was in essence Dunn and Kelenic for Diaz. The Mariners dumped 60 million of the 120 million owed to Cano on us. I did not want Cano but there it is. Where else were we getting a talented young, under control closer?

You’re forgetting about the Bruce and Swarzak contacts. The great unknown for us long-time sufferers is could we have worked something out to keep Kelenic, if the Coupons didn’t likely step in here. In any case, until the day I die, I wanted no part of trading Kelenic and/or getting saddled with Cano.

Can't disagree with what you said in your last paragraph, except pump the brakes on Kelenic and Smith. Cano is certainly looking like a $14 million/year albatross in the deal. But Kimbrel is meh.

I agree with most of what you said. But what tico said above about Cano is a good point. Not sure what other elite closers were on the market when Mets picked up Diaz, but Kimbrel would not have been one of my choices.

Fair enough. Or... how does Gio Gonzalez or Dallas Keuchel look instead of Font/Vargas in the rotation right about now? They STILL have better starters in the pen with Lugo and Gsellman. Hell, id give one shot to Santiago and see if his start can last more than 4 innings.

Worse case scenario, Swarzak contract is up after 2019 and Bruce after 2020. Cano is not worth putting up with until after 2024.

OK, you got me about the 2019 FA Closers, which was VERY WEAK AF!!! Other than Kimbrel, Adam Ottavino was the best FA reliever on the market, and he is not a closer. They couldve went "All In" for Kenley Jansen after this offseason but the Wilps will never REALLY go ALL IN.

We don't know if we could have kept Kelenic. The rumor was Seattle wanted McNeill and we refused so we had to give up something else. Kelenic might be Trout or he might be Alex Ochoa. Time will tell.

I'm putting the Dodgers on upset alert tonight. Vargas is going to pitch a no hitter!!!
Maybe I was not THAT far off--well the no hitter was a big ask, but Vargas was solid tonight.

Vargas has actually been as good as deGrom and Wheeler of late. And better than Syndegaard. Just not generally going as late into games. But tonight a very solid 6.
Agreed.
Matz and Vargas have been solid.
First time Vargas going into a 7th inning this season.

I hear the Marlins are playing better and won a few series lately. Go Jeter! As the saying goes, you play the teams on the schedule.
Shouldn't you be rejoicing in your dead as a door nail thread? No worries, year 4 of multiple WS wins will come and go with the new Core 4.

Mets scored 5, 7 and then 8 runs in this series before getting shut down by a pitcher who's having an outstanding season. I don't think offense was the culprit behind losing 3 of 4.
This series is kind of a throw away for me. The 9th inning disaster aside, we played them pretty much straight up.

Still went 1-3 in a series they could have easily swept. Big difference being 30-26 instead of 27-29. Also shows you why the Dodgers are the Dodgers (at least in the regular season) and the Mets are the Mets.

If you also take into consideration being swept by the Marlins, blowing numerous leads is why the Mets are an average team. They are far from a team like Astros or Boston. If there is no chance to win championship then rebuild. Don't waste time being average.

Frazier and Hecheverria have both been really solid of late.
A lot o people were on Hech (not gonna try to spell his name) early in the season, and rightfully so--his hitting was atrocious. But now that he is getting reps, maybe he going to develop into a solid player. Too soon to call that, but we can hope.

Conforto should be so much better of a hitter than he is. I wonder if the Mets staff is screwing him up like so many others or if he’s just a head case.

Mets analyst Nelson Figueroa fired from SNY

Mets TV analyst Nelson Figueroa has been fired from his job with SNY, The Post has learned.

Figueroa was let go Friday morning after he showed up Thursday in what was described by sources as a state not fit to work. Figueroa allegedly demanded to still appear on SNY’s evening program, “Baseball Night in New York,” but was not permitted to appear.

Hechevarria IS a solid player and has been for years. Remember he was an everyday SS for four years. What he is developing mid-career, like a lot of players these days, is extra base power.

Hech and D Smith are going to make things interesting as the Met's start to get healthy. Frazier hitting has also made things tough in a good way. I like J Davis in the lineup but if Frazier is hitting, his glove is just too damn good.
Our biggest problem with the everyday lineup is that we have very few elite fielders who can at least hit just a little bit. JL is great in CF but the guy just can't hit. Has to be the number 4 OF but all we have is Nimmo who is a much less fielder and not hitting any better this year. Plus, we most likely have to play McNeil, Smith, Davis in the OF quite a bit the rest of the year so we do need an elite CF.

He’ll be on the pine soon for fruitless Cano
