Or maybe it's those hooligan teens on the beach and boardwalk in OC on weekends - the noise from their partying could be disorienting all those whales and sharks. In all seriousness, while it sounds like something I would have found fun as a teen, this past Saturday night they found 8 teens unconscious from dugs/alcohol and there were certainly some fights and unruly behavior. Surprised we haven't seen a thread on this yet talking about how this is a sign of the apocalypse...

Lot of tankers through Raritan bay on their way up the Arthur Kill. No whale hit finding itself in shallow bay waters and struck by one of those big ships would stand a chance.

Unless it was one of those evil sailors out of the Raritan or Keyport Yacht clubs, carving slices into humpback whales with their keels. LOL

I was down there for the day last Saturday and it was very crowded (with many teens), but not unruly. However, this was during the day, so big difference from at night. That being said, when on vacation down there last summer and the summer prior, I was surprised how many teen gatherings were allowed to take part on the beach at night. At first I thought it was something like a town sponsored event, there were so many kids gathered at the same place. But nothing seemed to come from it then. I guess these hooligans took it to a new level last weekend!

Sucks that the beach will now be closed at 8pm and the restrooms at 10pm, for those of us who might want to go for a walk at night or even for some who might go surf fishing in the evening perhaps.

I was down there for the day last Saturday and it was very crowded (with many teens), but not unruly. However, this was during the day, so big difference from at night. That being said, when on vacation down there last summer and the summer prior, I was surprised how many teen gatherings were allowed to take part on the beach at night. At first I thought it was something like a town sponsored event, there were so many kids gathered at the same place. But nothing seemed to come from it then. I guess these hooligans took it to a new level last weekend!

Sucks that the beach will now be closed at 8pm and the restrooms at 10pm, for those of us who might want to go for a walk at night or even for some who might go surf fishing in the evening perhaps.

Yeah, during the day on Saturday wasn't too bad, but after dark, the cops were funneling 1000+ teens onto the beach by 11th St., in an attempt to keep them from bothering families and businesses on the boardwalk, but you could see the huge unruly crowds from the boardwalk and hear the yelling and screaming and music from the kids. Wasn't an issue for me (would've been if I were a parent of one of those kids), but it made my wife a little nervous, as there were still some teens running all over on the boardwalk. Kids have been unruly forever, but it used to be more out of sight and in predictable places - with social media, these things can pop up almost anywhere at any time and have been an issue for a number of Shore towns the past year or two.

I also suspect they're not going to hassle grown-up beach strollers at 9 pm - the curfew is to go after groups of kids after 8 pm. And maybe they'll back off on the bathroom thing if the new measures work to keep the huge teen throngs away.

Looked like sandsharks - not that big. Agree on the teens - have at your fun, but some of the behavior went well beyond acceptable.

A lot of people would argue, but iMO the very first criteria for "Central Jersey" has to be that any location is on the coastal plain, i.e. south of the line of maximum glacial advance. Montgomery Twp. is squarely in the Piedmont geological province. Not "Central Jersey".

Just got back after a great week in OCNJ at the best rental we've ever had, at least with respect to location: right on the boardwalk with a spectacular view of the beach/ocean (sunrise pic below) from the deck and even most of the rooms. Had great weather (for us - we don't love the heat) and was fun having some friends and family down to hang with us. Had nice day trips to Cape May and AC and lots of walking up and down the boardwalk (including a few cheesesteaks at Angelo's my favorite spot for that on the boardwalk), plus the water temp was actually warmer than expected (was in the mid-60s). But with a view like below, we spent more time than normal just hanging out eating and drinking.

Yes, we saw at least one fox - and saw him last year too, as we were about one house back from the boardwalk on Wesley last year. Really like that location too. We tend to walk early and in the evening to stay out of the worst of the sun...

My hat which is same as the one you wear for game day has transitioned just for that. As I used to wear it to the beach, *mow/work outside and the game.

* The second activity has made a too much of a sweaty salt band and my Wife “suggested” I get a new one for the beach if I am going to sit with her and our friends. LOL

Agree on the cold June so far - give me 80-85 degrees! At the end of April, we spent 5 cold, rainy, windy, miserable weather days on the bay in Tuckerton. Only redeeming quality was the house.

I was checking out PredictWind (it's a marine nav planning app) yesterday and the winds off the NJ coast were 26 kts, gusting to 36 kts. That kind of wind can give you a hell of a ride.

And to annoy you further, the NHC, in May, determined that a strong storm system well off the NE US in Jan 2023 was actually a hybrid subtropical storm, which will remain unnamed, but will count for the season. Was going to start the usual thread on seasonal forecasts (most are for a normal season) later today...
