OT: New York Mets 2020-2021 Off Season Thread

Tough to be close to Florida and sign somewhere other than the Braves.
at $15 mil per years and somewhere in the 70-100 for the career- anywhere on the east coast would be no different. Atlanta would most likely be a 4-8 hr drive depending on where in Florida he is and you could jump on a plane or private jet and be in Fla from NYC in less time then that. just saying...

Atlanta just isn't a bad team for a good pitcher to sign with.

Why the Matz hate? If you assume 2020 was an aberration, as I do, then we know what we have in him. A competent back of the rotation guy. In today's market, those guys go for $5M.
Because how many times do we have to see him give up 6 runs in an inning but he gets a pass because hes from Long Island?

Not surprised the Mets are having trouble hiring any front office. Seems like many top candidates are turned off by shady Steve. Can you blame them? Very bad look for Mets fans to have this guy as your owner.

You somehow got that out of this story? Priceless

The story was quite the opposite- other owners are not freeing their personnel to speak to Cohen because they are afraid of all his money. It is not because candidates are turning it down because of Cohen, only one guy turned it down but that was because of family and NY more than anything else.

Nice try though but not even close to the story you posted.

From the article
“A potential candidate said he was not interested because his research left concern that in his hedge fund, Cohen pushes the ethical boundaries too much, and would that permeate the Mets”

Cohen and a monkey is a better combination than Wilpon and BVW.

Why are Mets struggling to hire then?
If I knew the answer to that I would be making 6 figures in the front office.
Why are Mets struggling to hire then?
Because the Mets didnt hire the first guy they looked at? Because Chris Young turned them down? (nd who else turned them down since the Post article didnt mention them?) Plus Alderson is there so no need to hire the very first guy.

Lots of skeletons in lots of owners closets for that excuse. All of a sudden a boundary was drawn because of Cohen lol.

I’m not sure you quite understand what Cohen did and for how long. Prob explains why people are willing to turn down 6 and 7 figure jobs then to work for him.

I will say I did miss that in the article so you were correct on that candidate.

But, I doubt very much that many GM's are going to care one iota about that. There are a lot of shady owners out there- A GM really only cares if he will have money to spend and if the organization is committed to winning and building their farm system.

I personally think that our real problem may be that a top GM isn't going to want to have their every move questioned by Sandy.
And the other issue that the other owners are not going to give professional courtesy and allow him to talk to their front office guys.

From what I have read the Mets will tender Matz. I could take him or leave him. Not very durable and the trend line (not just 2020) has not been great. I don't see any real improvement in his pitching abilities.

I actually think its good that the mets are taking their time and spending prudently versus just flashing cash all over the place.

Steinbrenner was worse. Hypocritical of Yankee fans not to despise that convicted felon.

The idea is not to hire the first guy, but to hire the RIGHT guy. No need for a rush on this GM job. Complete the due diligence on the candidates and get the right person. Sandy can handle things until this is resolved.

First I never posted anything negative about Cohen. Second @cicero grimes didn't even know what Steinbrenner was convicted of until I called him out on it a few months ago.
Never said you did. I'm just saying it goes both ways to the Yankee fans who are tired of people talking about Stienbrenner but yet mentions Cohen. And they were the same Yankee people who were ok with Wilpons' TWO Ponzi episodes as long as they held the Mets back and kept the money in their accounts.

Personally its whatever. IMO, just like politicians, all rich people have to be scumbags in it for themselves to be able to have and earn that much wealth. It is what it is.

First of all I knew very well what he was convicted of and you never called me out on that. I won't even bring up the Winfield suspension which may also have been a crime. As far as giving it a break how about Yankee fans who want to post on a Met forum keep it to baseball and not petty jealousy.

WB- I don't believe this is pointed at you but in this case, good old SF who must have a micro p

And you bite on it and jump in the shallow end of the jealousy pool. BTW why would Yankees fans be jealous of the Mets? That is even a more bizarre comment.

You do bring up a good point. lol It's funny, as I will jump on a Yankee fan in this thread who is trying to bash the MEt's but if I jump over to the Yankee thread, I try to just talk Yankee baseball and discuss as a fan. I may even have some disagreements or different opinions but never try to troll on a different team's thread. We do have a couple of our Met fans on here that do come over to the Yankee thread and start trolling and you guys have a handfull that do it here. I never really understand it.

You've heard of Bobby Bonilla Day? Yesterday was Robinson Cano Day. The Mets received their annual $3.75M check from the Mariners, to cover their share of Cano's annual salary. Cano is of course not getting paid anything this year, and the Mets get to keep the $3.75M. What a deal! Brodie was truly a genius.
At first I thought you were going a different direction with that.lol

The funny thing is that all of baseball makes jokes of the BB contract and yet, there may be at least another 20 contracts almost exactly the same. And to be honest, they way they did it, actually helped the Met's and even makes sense.

The Bonilla deal absolutely helped the Mets. It freed up enough money in the 2000 budget to acquire Mike Hampton, who helped get them to the WS. When Hampton left as a free agent, they used the compensatory draft pick to draft David Wright.

It's been a long time since he was good.
At this point success with him is a 4 era, 5ip/start and if that's his upside I'd rather go elsewhere.
I wish he had the mental makeup to pitch out of the pen but it doesn't seem like he does.
