OT: New York Mets 2020-2021 Off Season Thread

It's been a long time since he was good.
At this point success with him is a 4 era, 5ip/start and if that's his upside I'd rather go elsewhere.
I wish he had the mental makeup to pitch out of the pen but it doesn't seem like he does.
Agreed. Had enough Matz and his free passes for the past 4 years.

DiComo reports that the Mets are non-tendering Chasen Shreve. Did not see that coming. I assume (hope) that they plan to use the money and roster spot for a lefty bullpen upgrade.

EDIT: Watching Baseball Night in NY now. No word yet on Matz. The deadline is 8:00. Maybe Matz is the lefty bullpen upgrade?

Even if we tender Matz ,which we shouldn't ,we could then still cut him before the season and only owe 1/6 of the contract or something close to that.
Under the circumstances I don't know if that's true. They didn't make a tender offer to Matz per se. He signed a contract before the deadline (minutes before, but still before). So I think his guaranteed money is whatever the two parties negotiated it to be, same as any other contract. Could be wrong though.

Yeah I'm not sure now either with the deal they agreed on.

All of it makes sense. Matz at $5 mill...kind of an ehhh move but I can see why they would do it.

We now have a full bullpen - full of right-handers that is:

Diaz
Lugo
Familia
Betances
May
Brach
Castro
Gsellman

That's eight. If the roster limit stays at 26, as I expect it will, then eight is enough.

Makes you wonder whether the May acquisition will be the only bullpen acquisition. Or maybe Matz is the bullpen lefty.

Or Lugo to the starting rotation

We would need at least two lefties in the pen, no? Right now we have zero. I assume we will acquire one, either through FA signing or trade. I think Matz will be there too. Thomas Szapucki will hopefully be ready. And they think enough of Daniel Zamora to have offered him a contract, so there's that.

Would not at all mind re-signing Justin Wilson, although it may not be that easy.

I think with the new rules for facing 3 batters LOOGYs will not be as important. We still need 1 lefty but May also had good cross over splits.

Per Tim Britton of The Athletic (paywall) Matz' contract is not fully guaranteed until Opening Day. Same with Heredia.

Other notes:

1) Why was Gsellman tendered and not Shreve? Short answer is that Mets still have options on Gsellman and not on Shreve. Thus Gsellman provides more flexibility.
2) Who among the league's non-tendered players, is the most interesting to the Mets? Britton's answer is Adam Duvall. Not a bad right-handed fourth outfielder and bench option, especially if there is a DH.

Need this McCann domino to fall ASAP so we can move onto the big fish

Is Brad Hand available? If so, sign him

No to Adam Duvall......He's a career .233 hitter and he has some awful years as of late hitting below.200.....ugh...He's like a 4th OF for your AAA team

And you bite on it and jump in the shallow end of the jealousy pool. BTW why would Yankees fans be jealous of the Mets? That is even a more bizarre comment.
If not jealousy what possesses Yankee fans to come on a Met forum and make silly, hypocritical comments about Met ownership. Possibly insecurity or something deeper in their personal lives? Talk about biting, you engaged first.

Engaged first? I was responding to your knucklehead comment about Steinbrenner. The whole talk about any owner not getting people because of their past is nonsense. Steinbrenner got nearly everyone he wanted. Cohen will do the same. It's called $$$ The common obstacle for both teams is NYC. Not everyone wants to work under the bright lights.

If we get Springer and Davis/Nimmo/Smith are not involved in any trades, why in earth would we want a guy like Duvall? And if we were to go with a non tendered OF, I would much prefer Dahl over Duvall. Duvall would be a horrible fit. LAst thing we need is a do or die batter

Here is the thing WB- you are speaking for yourself but the comments about the other Yankee fans are about a couple of idiots you have coming in the Met's thread talking exactly opposite of you.

I agree that it is just mind boggling that a Yankee fan should be jealous or feel the need to troll the Met's at this point unless they are just a imp D insecure person. I also agree with you that an Owner's past should not have anything to do with a decision to come work for them. This is Baseball and what an owner does in shipping or finance means exactly zero to a man who career and money relies on baseball decisions only. But, that was brought up by a trolling Yankee fan and the Met fans in here are trying to tell your fellow fan the same thing you are saying...

If I'm reading the tea leaves properly:
1) Sounds likely we get McCann.
2) Odorizzi likely with May/Hefner relationships.
3) Springer will either be Mets or Blue Jays.
4) Bauer ?

Does anyone think Realmuto overplayed his hand trying to use the Mets? I understand he wasn't big on coming to NY, but as long as the Mets had an interest, it would drive up his market value. The fact that the Mets are focused elsewhere may impact his ability to command a huge contract (7 years $200+ million) he was looking for on the open market.

I think McCann fits better with the Mets as long as they get the other primary targets (Bauer and Springer. Plus, McCann doesn't lock the Mets up long term at the catcher's position while overpaying.
