What is the Mets next move? I think a trade rather than a free agent signing. Sandy is clearly uncomfortable with Davis at 3B.
It is funny- Davis reminds me of how much the Met's didn't want to love McNeil. While Davis is a liability in the field- guy is a really good hitter and they say just a great clubhouse guy.
But...if we could trade him and get back a good defense but also a 25+ HR 3B- then I am for it. But I also think Lindor will help that side of the infield with his defense anyway.

I would love to see a 4th OF type guy that is a top defensive CF. Hell, bring back Juan L in that role. Maybe even a late inning utility infielder and get us one more MR...Wouldn't mind an aging bat that can accept a PH role.

You would rather pay Bauer 40 mil over 18 for Stroman?????? Think about this- Carasco and Stroman and $10 mil left over...And one could easily argue Carasco over Bauer.
But let's say- Stroman goes 12-9 or something like that. Maybe a 3.90 era as a number 3...Bauer goes 15-7 with a 2.90 as a $40 mil guy...No way do I take Bauer for 40 over Stroman for 18. I think both are over paid but Stroman by 3-4 mil and Bauer by 20 mil
Despite having the same stats, dude just doesn’t like Stroman’s attitude while Bauer is quirky so thats ok...

I think he’s overrated. But I’m trying to use other people’s PG13 words in describing the difference between Stroman and Bauer.
I think you take the guy with the same stats getting paid a lot less and won't be cancer in the clubhouse over the other. Even if he was a normal guy he would have a tough time in the locker room being way overpaid compared to deGrom. Mets avoided a toxic situation.

And I get being upset with Stroman. But I am giving almost everyone a pass when it comes to covid in 2020.
if Stroman comes out and pitches to a mid 3 era, goes 6-8 innings 80% of games and is just a good teammate-2020 is forgiven

As a Mets fan this is what happens when you bring back a low energy career loser like Alderson. He gets played like a fiddle. Can’t close on deals, should have been terminated for the Porter hiring, and now gets absolutely used and embarrassed again.
For a player never remotely worth the money!! Yet Sandy thought he was apparently.
If Sandy had any pride or dignity left, he would have resigned by the close of business today.

You really think the Mets lost here today?? Do you understand how average Bauer is? You need rethink this and do some research.

Was anybody really impressed with Stroman as a Met in 2019? While he was sitting out ‘20, Bauer was winning a Cy Young and pitching lights out in G1 of the playoffs against a team that easily could have won the WS.

Here’s a box if you missed it 12 Ks

No I didn’t say I would sign him. Bauer is an above average pitcher who made a mint for himself off a fake ass 60 game season and 13 starts.
Clearly Sandy was prepared to pay his ass though perhaps out of desperation due to his winter of failures.
The game has passed him by in every aspect. He was chasing this player and still lost. Sandy is a career loser and should have been terminated after the Porter news. Mets fans who defend him defend the mediocrity the Wilpons beat into us over the past decades.
Alderson needs to go ASAP.

Surprised no one in this thread has mentioned that Bauer basically admitted that he cheated last season. He has been vocal calling out Cole for using a substance to increase his spin velocity, then decided he’d show how it worked by using it himself to drastically increase his own spin velocity. So either he’ll knowingly cheat this season to try to stay on top or quickly fall back to being a mediocre pitcher.

I disagree however that Stroman can’t also be a cancer in the clubhouse. He’s the guy who was taking sh*t last season right before he bailed on the season. Not impressed with his pitching either since the Mets got him. Don’t really care that the Mets didn’t get Bauer but I’d still rather have him than Stroman.

Well since you are Mr Magoo you do realize you are blind to reality 😉

Good pointing it out. Cole has used Pelican Grip Dip for years to doctor the ball and Bauer called him out as you said for a while.

Guess if you can’t beat em, join em. I wonder if Bauer is also using Pelican like Cole or will sell his own product on his website seeing as he fancies himself as more than just a pitcher.

As I see that Ozuna has signed back with the Braves at a fairly friendly team contract- 4/65...how in the F have they been able to do these contracts over the past few years that have been super club friendly? Meanwhile- we can't get a guy to sign for $40 mil...I don't want to sign a guy for 40 mil but it seems like we will end up paying Conforto near 30 mil per and if he were with the braves they would find a way to sign him for 18 per year...

Some guys like being a big fish in a small pond. Playing in the bright light can be a bit much for many players. Just winning games in some places is enough to satisfy the fans. Here, it's winning a championship, or you're considered a failure.

I think Ozuna is a guy who was negatively affected by the decision not to have a DH in the NL. I am actually surprised he got a 4 year deal despite his offensive capabilities.

Let's all calm down about TB's Cy Young award. It was a 60 game season and about 10 starts. He won an award for having a great 1/3 of a normal year.

He's not going to start I hope. Should be late inning defensive replacement in games we're up. If they use him any other way it's a huge mistake.

Lindor
Carrassco
McCann
May

That’s a very good improvement. I just wished that they signed George Springer because it would have given the Mets a more potent offense top to bottom and may have been a better net team then if they had Trevor Bauer.

Going forward I think signing a James Paxton would be a nice flyer.

True, but we must think beyond 2021. Signing Springer probably means not extending Conforto. Remember we have Cano's $24M to worry about in 2022 and 2023.

Agree. Gives us almost nothing as a hitter. Not signing Springer is a massive FAIL.

I continue to believe it was a case of Springer/Lindor/Conforto. Pick two. You can't pick three. If so, then IMO they made the right decision - PROVIDED THAT they extend both Lindor and Conforto. If they don't or can't, then I agree with you.

Although I do not agree that Almora gives us almost nothing as a hitter. He's had years where he'd fit very nicely at the bottom of the order. Do not be misled by his 34 AB's last year. Hardly a valid sample!

Good signing. Good defense and can hit some. Throw out last year stats, can't measure him by that. Use our remaining money to bring in one more starting pitcher and a really good utility player, Cant sign every big free agent, need some money left for our guys that we need to extend. Get me one more SP and I will be elated with our off season.

Amen brother! Gotta keep some powder dry. Especially with the Cano albatross still hanging around our necks.

I am SO glad the Bauer deal fell through!

The Mets signed zero big free agents.

If there was a Cap in baseball I would agree with you, but there’s not. We have no idea how much Cohen is willing to exceed the luxury tax threshold and for how long. He’s got 3 times more money than any other Owner in baseball. Love the Lindor trade and hopefully the Mets re-sign him. The trade makes this off-season a good one, however, the difference between a great off-season is the failure to sign any big free agents and they had no issue offering Bauer 40M plus for multiple years. It’s disapppointing they couldn’t land either Springer or Bauer, and would not consider the current state of the Mets as a World Series contender.

The real loss was Realmuto. He's so much better than McCann offensively and defensively. They didn't even make a run at him so didn't make much sense.

Almora can't hit. I'm not even using 2020 numbers. Hopefully they can get him to improve.

In 20 20 hindsight, Mets should have been more aggressive going after Springer or Realmuto. To not sign any of the top tier free agents is a failure.
I guess last hopeful signings to occur will be:
- Merwyn Gonzalez
- Odorizzi or Paxton
- Justin Wilson and/or Jake McGee

Nimmo/Almora platoon in center. Guess Dom in left.
Nimmo/Dom have to both play at least 120-130 games this year...Almora is a perfect number 4 OF. Start in those 40-50 games and be a late defensive player, pinch runner for guys like Dom/Alonso etc...
