OT: New York Mets 2020-2021 Off Season Thread

Congratulations, guys. You deserve quality ownership committed to winning. This is great for baseball in New York. Here's hoping we see a few more Subway Series in the future.

Or? Ten bucks says "Uncle Steve" makes a run at all three. The timing of this deal couldn't be more perfect. Tons of guys are going to be non-tendered. Kluber, Charlie Morton and Ryan Braun already have been. There won't be many buyers this hot stove season, just a lot of tire kickers waiting for prices to drop. The Mets could make a few signings that in 3 years look like bargains.
I don't know if Cohen plans to come out firing. Remember his promise to the owners that he wants to "win the right way" and that his big spending will be to build up infrastructure. Will he keep that pledge now that he's confirmed? My guess is that at least initially, he will keep his free agent spending in moderation.

Time to invest in the long term - a Front Office with knowledgeable baseball minds, technology/analytics tools, scouting and player development infrastructure (especially internationally), all areas that they've cut corners for years.

As for free agency, they'll strike big when they're good and ready to, noting this will be a good hot stove season to get some good players on the cheap as most teams are looking to cut, not invest.

The days of not going the distance (i.e. acquiring Player B when in fact they needed Player A) are over. The key here is to first bring in the right baseball minds to make these decisions.

Win the right way could be to keep his hometown guys and add through FA rather than trade them all away. Or, right way, as in, I am not going to lose because of being cheap.
This is a guy that does not accept losing

Based on his business career, he wants to win at any cost. Laws be damned.

:WooHoo:

They have enough holes in the rotation that they need to fill, he'd be an easy option for one of them.
Bad attitude and all about himself. Thinks he’s better than he is. Kind of like Cespedes. Good riddance.

Stroman pissed me off this year. But...with that said, he is still a fairly inexpensive 3/4 starter in the rotation. If we go into the season with deGrom, Peterson, Stroman and if Noah comes back his normal self mid way through...then I am ok with it. Add Bauer to the mix then it is a kick ass rotation. If not Bauer, maybe find a stop gap like Morton or someone like that.

Maybe I'm not familiar enough with their work- but Springer and McCann don't seem like must haves?

Springer is considered the top centerfield option available. And if you aren’t going to spend monster money on JT, McCann might be the next best available catcher option right now. But this is just one guys opinion.

Does this mean the Mets are not going to make a run at Cespedes? [roll]

Mets have Conforto, Smith (arguably outfield), Nimmo and JD Davis.

Who sits or gets dealt --Nimmo? Or does Davis move to 3B?

And you forgot McNeil

Add in that it sounds like NL won't continue the DH...Being a Met's fan with our current team, this is when I actually hope the DH stays.

But your thoughts are exactly what I have been wondering.

I would love Springer at CF. He is actually the guy I want most out of the FA's. But...that said. Let's say that gives us Nimmo/Springer/Conforto in the OF...Which, quite frankly, would be one hell of an OF...
And then we have Cano/Davis/McNeil vying for 2 IF spots. And then it leaves us with D Smith who may be a budding superstar who would be great at 1B but we have Alonso there.
How I rate these guys in my mind Nimmo/Cano/Davis are playing at above average level. Springer/Conforto/McNeil/Alonso/D Smith are all well above average and could either vie for MVP or be a leader in the league for one of the elite stats such as BA/HR/RBI's
Conforto/McNeil/Alonso are pretty much untouchables. So, we have Nimmo/Davis/Smith as potential trade. I think we do move at least one of these guys and hopefully for either a number 3 SP plus high round picks or top prospects.

As for Bauer- would love to get him but I almost feel that he would rather be anywhere else.

Realmuto- He is a top FA for sure but also seems not to want to be here and you will have to over bid for him. Plus, he will want to be the face of the team. I am not sure we need this at this time and tie up $25 mil per year for 5+ years on a C.
I almost wouldnt mind McCann on the team.

And then do things to reward our current players even if it is over paying Conforto, locking up Noah and maybe even locking up McNeil for the foreseeable future.

Grab a few good RP as well- looks like there may be a few of them out there

I think the predictions are reasonable. I can see how Stroman, who seems to be the epitome of self-confidence, would bet on himself by signing the QO.

I continue to believe that Cohen will be content with just one nine-figure signing this year. He is new to the country club and will want to play nice, for a while at least.

I am leery of Springer, or of any mega-dollar free agent CF. By the time they are eligible for free agency, they have generally lost a step and are ready to be moved to a corner OF position.

Bauer has a career ERA of approximately four and had his big year this year with only 11 starts. He's been around a while and will be 30 when spring training starts. He's anything but a sure thing. And he's a nut, one of those jerky nuts hated by opponents and teammates alike. Sure, we can sign him. But it could go very bad.

Not a fan of a 50 year contract for Bauer, don't get me wrong. If we can swing a 1 year deal (or 2), I'd prefer that to the 'Stro Show.

agree with you. Not that big of a fan of Bauer: he’s like “Cespedes” nutty and could easily implode under the NY spotlight. Realmuto is a no brainer if we could get him and Springer would be a nice pickup but certainly not a game-changer. Not all that enamored with this crop of free-agents.

I would much rather get Springer than Bauer. There are a couple of older guys out there that still have good arms and may be able to get them with reasonable 2 year deals and put them into the 3 spot of the rotation.

And here is an article which speculates that the Cubs might be willing to shed payroll and trade Darvish. If so, Cohen could be ready to pounce. Wouldn't it be something if all three Cy Young finalists were wearing orange and blue next year?

Do you really want to trade for a 34 YO who had one great semi season after a bunch of average years?
