OT: New York Mets 2020-2021 Off Season Thread

I honestly think the Mets should rebuild. The Braves and Marlins are young and hungry, while the Nats are only a year removed from winning it all and will probably spend handsomely this winter to try and overtake Atlanta. If the Mets were to take Realmuto away from the Phillies they'd have the clear head-to-head advantage, but let's be honest, neither NY or Philly is winning the NL East next year or probably in 2022, either. Tear it all down and start over.

So you want to trade deGrom? If you don't, then you ain't serious about rebuilding.

Keep away from Darvish. Old and injury prone. Bauer is a bit of a screwball so I’d be leery but interested. I’d like to get Charlie Morton for a 1-2 year rental. His stuff is filthy. Even a pitcher like Paxton could be good for 1-2 years. Less pressure playing for Mets should help him.

Explain tear it down...
Davis/Smith/Alonso/McNeil/Peterson
Nimmo/Diaz/Noah/Conforto/Lugo in Arbitration so still relatively good deals
Cano - no one is going to take his salary
deGrom is your star.

I do think we need to move one or two of these pieces. Most likely will be Smith or Davis, maybe throw Rosario into the mix...that can give us more major league ready plus draft/prospects.
But to tear it down- I really need to understand your plan with the players mentioned above, as they are your core.
Most of these guys are also still fairly young and we are tons under the LC...
Make a couple of signings, maybe move 1 or 2 guys and be deep playoff bound for the next 3-4 years and take that time to start building it right.

Before we can make a position player move we need to know if the DH will continue in the NL. If the DH returns Smith goes to 1st and Polar Bear to DH. If no DH then Smith has to play left. If you want Springer who do you trade, Conforto or Nimmo?

Are the Mets going to be better than the Braves, Nats, or even the Marlins this coming year? Are their prospects anywhere near as good as the young players plus the other minor leaguers still to come for those three teams? For me, the answer is no, which means that trading deGrom makes sense assuming there is a huge haul of prospects in return.

The Mets have a better lineup than all of them so why would we make the pitching worse instead of better? You probably wanted Seaver out also.

Our lineup was championship caliber this last year. We could use more speed though. But let’s say we add Springer and McCann- there wouldn’t be many lineups to match ours, more so if the DH is used again.
get a starter- doesn’t have to be Bauer, I would be thrilled with someone like Morton and hope Noah comes back in 2nd half. Maybe try to get someone like Hand in the BP and put Lugo back to the BP as well. If these things could happen, then I would ok with Stroman on the staff as well.
I love Davis as a player but he would be the guy I would try to trade.
smith showed he could be an AS player for years to come so I would love tofind a place for him over Davis or Nimmo.

I agree with you that we have a pretty good lineup, but I am old school and still prefer pitching and some defense to go along with the hitting. The Rays were not exceptional in any area but were above average in pitching, hitting and defense. I think you need a balanced team. Right now, we can mash but our pitching is suspect and we have problems fielding the ball.

There are better things than having Lindor on your fantasy postseason team - just sayin’

It is interesting when you look at the Rays- their offense wasn't even good when you look at it. The pitching, while they werent loaded with CY guys, they just didn't have anyone that sucked.

That is also why I didn't discount pitching with what I wrote. I just don't know if you need Bauer if you have deGrom. Believe me, wouldn't say no to having him but if we could get our starting pitching closer to what they did in 2019, we would have been a force. A big if next year is Noah S. can he come back in 2nd half and pitch well? It would be like making a major move at the trade deadline if he does. deGrom will be deGrom, cross fingers Peterson is the real deal, if Stroman is back and pitches like a number 3 and go out and get a number 3/4 type guy...Then we have a pretty good starting staff. Pick up a couple more good RP arms and put Lugo back to the pen as well and we are much better. To me, getting a guy like Springer who is above average in CF, can hit with power and have speed...it is the missing piece.

Per diComo, the closing of the sale may occur tomorrow, in which case the presser will be Tuesday.

Rick Baldwin passed away yesterday. He was only 67. Reliever during the 70s. I believe he had a good year or 2 with some awful Mets teams

An aside. A while back, we were discussing the most hits a team could get in an inning without scoring. The theoretical maximum is six.

Well apparently it is not just theoretical. Here is a story from a minor league game from 1890 where a team got three triples, one double, and two singles in an inning, and did not score!

Lindor is a name that keeps coming up as being available this off season. Would we have any interest?
