OT: New York Mets 2020-2021 Off Season Thread

Major takeaway for me by listening to the Press Conferences is I'm more optimistic about the Mets future then I've ever been before. Not only an Owner who has a huge amount of resources, but an Owner who has a really good idea of what makes an organization successful. Also, Sandy definitely has years of wisdom to ensure Baseball Operations gets this done.

Looks like the rumors that Moose and Maggie mentioned last week about Steve Cohen was only allowed an unwritten one big offseason move to show gratitude to the owners for allowing him to buy the Mets was wrong. Nice news conference earlier today. He even offered an olive branch to the Yankees saying "we're not competing with the Yankees, we're competing with 29 other clubs." Wonder if the Yankees (AND ITS FANS) would reciprocate this

Cohen will be competing against the Yankees. He has to be classful. In his words he didn’t buy the Mets to make money and be mediocre. He’s in it to win multiple World Series and the Yankees be dammed. Now it’s about the acquisition not the cost and a World Series win by 2025 if not sooner and sustainable great teams.

Happy...but wish Rojas was gone.
Cohen doesn’t accept mediocrity. If Rojas manages like a shitshow like he did this year he’ll be gone shortly . I also found it interesting that the Mets said Rojas is likely to back - not definitively. Thought that was weird but maybe leaving it up to the new GM to make a decision or if a top notch manager becomes available.

I think Stroman realize the market wasn't going to give him what he wanted. The Mets' offer would be about as good as it gets for him. Plus, he didn't pitch this past season and may need to prove himself to several GMs that he's worth the sum of money he's demanding.

Agreed but I think he would have got longevity but maybe not an annual yearly rate he wanted. Anyway I am very happy with this as we need SP and depth in the rotation. He'll have to make amends to his teammates if they didn't like what he pulled. I forgive him as since ownership changed I am having a clean slate from anything and everything that happened under the hapless weasel wilpons.

I was ready to move on, but I can’t argue with what he wrote in his tweet.

Stroman is betting on himself. Seems consistent with his personality, or at least his public persona.

oh well. Hopefully, Cohen won’t put up with his drama.
My read on Cohen is that he won't give a fvck about drama. You produce, your behavioral quirks are tolerated. You don't produce, you're gone regardless of what kind of model citizen you are. That's generally how it is with folks at that level.

Stroman pissed me off this year but let's be honest...if he is healthy and playing for a contract next year, I want him in this rotation since we have a ton of holes.
deGrom, Stroman, Peterson and in the 2nd half, add in Noah.
Still need to add a couple more. OF course we make a run at Bauer but who else? I was actually thinking that Happ may not be a bad 5th starter if his price is right. Yankee fans hated him mostly for his playoffs but he had a 6 game stretch last year that he pitched to a 1.98 era. Maybe C Morton?

I’m not a fan of Stroman but I’m ok with a 1 year deal as he’s playing for a new contract and should do well

Rotation of Degrom, Bauer or Morton, Stroman, Lugo, Peterson and then Noah in June seems ok. I’m sure another SP is signed as well such as a Paxton or Odorizzi.

The 1 year deal is great for the Mets. They had 3 holes in their rotation.

SURPRISE! Boomer Esiason, who came up with every excuse every time Steve Matz gave up 6 runs an inning, is not happy about the Mets signing Stroman because he is "only about building his brand." And yet minutes later talking about Trevor Bauer, he said that NY is perfect for Trevor Bauer to "build his brand." 🤔

Boomer has taken over for Fatso for being the most ignorant, egotistical , detached from real life idiot in sports radio. I can't listen to him

I do not listen to sports radio. But if "building one's brand" means pitching really well and thus increasing one's marketability both on the field and off, I'm good with that.

Dom Smith finished 13th in the MVP balloting. He was named on 8 of the 30 ballots. He received two 8th place votes, four 9th place votes, and two 10th place votes. Smith was the only Met named on any ballot.

Agreed. But dont rip one guy for doing it but in the next sentence praise another guy for doing the same thing.

Question for some of you guys in this years off season...3 major pitching names I hear mentioned are Bauer, Darvish, Odorizzi
For the money and commitment - who do you go after?
Bauer- he is going to ask big time money- up there with deGrom money. But which pitcher do you get? The short season CYA or the Bauer who only once pitched to under a 4.00 era?
Darvish- It would need to be in a trade and he has a contract of about 20 million per for the next couple of years. The most consistent Ace out of the 3
Odorizzi - Coming off injury and maybe a number 3 type pitcher - most affordable of the 3 but highest risk.

Looking back now- really wish our idiots in the front office did over spend last year on Wheeler...

We should look to see if we can make a deal for Musgrove. He's been sneakily very very good in Pitt and would be a good #2 excellent #3.

Has a decision been made on whether or not the NL will adopt the DH for the coming season? I would think that would be a factor on how teams approach trades/free agency.

Here's a good article on that topic. To summarize:
  • The current DH policy is for 2020 only. So unless something changes, the answer is no. However...
  • The Players' Association wants to keep the universal DH. So...
  • In the transactional world in which we live, MLB may use the universal DH as a negotiating chip, in exchange for expanded playoffs. However...
  • Even if the Players' Association plays hardball and says no deal, there may be enough support for the universal DH that MLB just might enact it anyway. So in other words...
  • Who the fvck knows?
