OT: New York Mets 2020 season

I dont care how decimated the rotation is. How many chances does Steve Matz gets until BVW realizes he ALWAYS have that 5 run inning EVERY SINGLE GAME HE START?

I hope Steve Cohen cant get here fast enough. Of course Manfred will have ARod buy the team and the BS continues.

Maybe, but I don't think so. Given Cohen's ugly history of financial fraud, he probably isn't Manfred's preferred choice. But Manfred doesn't get to decide. The other owners do. Their primary concern is the value of their own franchise. If Cohen overpays, as he no doubt will do, it has an upward ripple effect on their own valuations. So they will welcome him with open arms.

Matz is cheap and that's why the Mets hold onto guys like him. Meanwhile, you let Wheeler walk and offer up Thor because he might be too expensive to re-sign.:Angry

That's is no way to build a team you think will compete.
Patience. Hope is on the horizon, in the person of the real life Bobby Axelrod.

Can't love this post enough.

Cohen was already approved and the financial fraud thing is overblown. The Wilpons are literally involved in the largest financial fraud situation of all time and they are protected somehow.

they were already owners, Cohen's financial fraud was pretty sketchy he just got away with it.

I've read a lot about it. If you don't think the majority of billionaires already in the circle have something similar on their resume then...

As have I. If billionaires played by the rules of the common man he would be in jail for a long time.

I hope you're right. But I got the feeling it will be ARod who winds up with the Mets

Games like tonight, with Matz on the mound, should have a mercy rule in effect. Save the bullpen for the night and the fans from seeing this BS.

Bring up someone from Brooklyn to take Matz's place. Cant do any worse.

It's not just Matz with problems, it starts with Ramos calling the game behind the plate. Another is the lack of defense.

Options:

1) Spend a dollar for a quality player and win Or 2) save a dollar for piss poor players and lose?

I'll take save a dollar for a penny. So like the Mets under the Coupons.

And another thing, Sewald showed last year he didn't belong in the big leagues. Another one of these penny pincher moves.

Too bad the Mets dont have the gumption to make a move on Matz similar to what Atlanta did earlier this season to Foltyniewicz. A guy who was actually a good pitcher for them in the past. Matz has never been more than mediocre and frankly i dont think he has what it takes on the inside. He and Sewald are the worst possible combo.

we gave up nothing and got nothing.

Wrong. SWR is a top 100 prospect and while Kay is projected to be a back end starter that is still useful. He's pitching well so far this year. Wouldn't surprise me if he has a better career than Matz. Believe they want to same HS but in different years.

Wheeler’s looked pretty good. Oh that’s right. We have Cano. And Lowry. And Wacha. And Porcello. And Betances at 92-95 mph.

How the heck did BVW-WTF get this job again?

Reverse jinx!

Guillorme should be in the starting rotation after a perfect inning.
Once word of his devastating change up gets around the league, I think he might be less effective. Tough to win in this league with only a change up, no matter how devastating.

He got the job by telling the Wilpons he could win now. The other applicants told them they were looking at a rebuild, which was not what they wanted to hear.

Matz been doing this for years before Ramos got there.
Matz wasn't consistently bad as he is now. Ramos flat out can't call a game or catch the ball and let alone frame a pitch for a strike. Pitchers like Matz need help from the catcher. There is a reason why Thor and others had issues with Ramos catching them.

What the Mets need to do so they can get better:
Find a catcher. Realmuto is a free agent, but if the Coupons still own the team kiss that dream goodbye.

Find a solid defender for centerfield. He has to be able to cover ground in the outfield and contribute to the offense.

Find starting pitching and bullpen help. Either move Lugo and Gsellman into the rotation or go out and spend for quality starters. The bullpen needs to get away from specialists, no more Familia or Diaz or Sewald. I'm tired of throwers. It would be best if you had guys who can pitch. It would help if you had guys who you can run out for two innings. The new rule of facing three batters may require this approach of an inning eater out of the pen.

Find an owner who doesn't have deep pockets and short arms.

Cohen has NOT been approved by the league, at least not as majority owner. He could not be. The approval vote does not occur until the terms of the deal are in place.

After reading up on this a bit further, I am no longer convinced that the other owners would approve Cohen. It has nothing to do with his shady history, although they might use that as their excuse. It has everything to do with the fact that he'd be by far the richest owner in baseball, and they don't want him changing the landscape of the game by overpaying players. (Which is of course exactly what we Met fans want him to do.)

Under this line of thought, the other owners would view the Harris/Blitzer bid as much "safer", in terms of preservation of the existing salary structure.

That said, I still that the other owners want the sale price to be as big as possible, which would have a ripple effect on their own valuations. If Cohen is willing to overpay, I think he'll be approved - but I don't have a great deal of conviction in that statement.
