Question, is Lindor the one to give the $300 million plus contract to now with options like Story, Baez, Correa and Seager all potential FA's after the season?

Ummmm- yes, he IS the one. This guy has it all AND he is already loving it here. He is a top player with a personality that will be as big as any other player we have ever had...
Get him signed and put it in the books and enjoy the next 10 years

Lindor wants to be here and he is embracing the moment. We saw this past off-season where big free agents passed on the money from the Mets. Not everyone is built to handle NY. Also, who is to say those guys won't re-sign with their current teams.

I have to start keeping current with this thread. Since The Star Ledger/NJ.Com have evidently decided not to cover the Mets I need to get my info from a reliable source.

Huge aspect of this...I do not think Realmuto wanted any part of NYC. Bauer would have but he would have been a disaster. I think Springer would have been ok but he seems a little more laid back.
Story- seems like a guy that may not do NYC well, Baez may fit but...he would not be as much of a in the forefront guy and not Lindor as a player either. I go all in on Lindor...To me, seems the perfect blend of Reyes, Wright, Piazza, Carter

3 days before the 1st pitch, and the Mets thread is filled with excitement.

He will be 37 at the end of the deal. I really hope they don't offer any more years. His ability to cover ground at short will be greatly diminished at the end of the deal.
Most likely at 3B at that time...But you make that deal!

In other news, Mets announced that the black unis are back. We won't see them often, but we will see them.

Not a fan. Much prefer the blue. But from a merchandising standpoint, I am sure I am not in their target demographic.

I agree that we are questionable at this point with SP- deGrom/Stroman are a good 1/2 but complete unknown after that until Carrasco/Noah are back in the mix.
RP- I am not sure I agree- Betances is trouble, as is Familia's control. But Diaz looks like 2018- May/Loup/Castro/ give us 4 very good guys in there- and a few others have been performing well too. When Lugo comes back- it is also like when we get our 2 starters back- it will be like 3 major trade pickups.
Defense- we all know is not going to be a great asset. We will have to get past that and hope late inning replacements can do their jobs. Back up catcher- Nido has grown on me a bit but unless we lose McCann for a long period- it is not going to be a difference maker. How many teams have a top notch BU catcher.
Manager- agree, he has a lot to prove but it seems they all get managed by the front office geeks anyway.
I can see us hovering in the plus 5 games area going into the break. But then see us make a huge 2nd have push. We should have the pitching boost and if all 3 come back strong- it may become the best staff in the league. But that is s big if. Worst case- we have a few studs but over all in the middle of the pack in pitching. Hitting- I think we are a leader in most categories again except for SB's.
My over/under is 92
Hope you’re right.

He should accept it. For a guy who has has 2 seasons of hitting 0.300 and higher and never had RBI's above 92, he should accept it hands down. All the other guys in the top contract list have had better numbers.
RBI is not a stat that you should be looking at when evaluating players.

If he does not take it, the Mets still may have an opportunity to sign Story, Seager, Baez or Correa after the season and perhaps for the same or less money. I do not want to go 12 years for a shortstop who will be nearly 40 at the end of the contract. I would rather offer him at most 340 million for 10 years and walk if he refuses.

Now it gets personal.

Reportedly Lindor has turned down (for the moment anyway) 10 for $325M. He wants 12 for $385M. Mookie got 12 for $365M. When you get into that stratosphere, it's all about keeping score. Lindor apparently doesn't want to finish second.

On the other hand, you have Cohen. He's got a tremendous ego, as does anyone with his Forbes ranking. He's leaked that his 10 for $325M is his best and final offer. Will he be willing to back down? Of course he can afford to, but that's not the point.

My proposed compromise: Lindor signs for 10 for $325M. BUT, the deal doesn't become effective until his current one year arbitration agreement for $22.3M expires. Thus he's guaranteed 11 for $347.3.

We'll see if they listen to me.

Another reason I preferred the Springer path and ride with Gimenez/Rosario at SS. Not feeling this 12/$385M bit at all.

We can be sure of this: If Lindor declines to sign and elects free agency, there will be another big name SS who will happily take Cohen's money.

I think Lindor would be in a stronger spot if the other FA shortstops were not going to be out there at the end of the year. Is there a 325 million or more landing spot for all of them? Who knows what teams will spend if revenues are down again to to attendance caps. Its certainly a gamble.

Presumably they considered this and answered yes before deciding to trade for him. While they seemed to get a pretty good deal they paid more than a one year rental price. They knew this was likely a $300MM investment.

Not sure Cohen is doing himself any favors by talking to the press about this at all. Having said that, I think 10/325 is a more than fair offer and Lindor needs to decide what he wants to do. He has been charming and probably has the media and fan base on his side but this is a business decision for Cohen, since he still has try and get Conforto signed as well. Sounds like that might going slow as well. He may have a big piggy bank but he did not get that by making dumb decisions.

Yeah- the back ends of these deals are never good. Those years are more about financial security for the player. Hope by then his bat hasn't slowed down too much, he can play another position, or the universal DH is a fixture.

Rotation set.

deGrom @ Nats
Stroman
Peterson
Walker @ Phillies
deGrom
Luchessi (or opener)
Stroman (home opener)

I like it! If up to me, I'd get a calendar, write deGrom's name in ink every fifth day, and then figure everything else out around that.

The hope is always that at the backend of the deal, they have already brought you to the payoffs at least 8 of those years and a couple of Rings. If they do that- it paid off in spades for the team.

If they are haggling 10/325 and 12/385- that tells me they are at the very final stages of getting this done. go 12/360 and get it done with top deal for a SS ever...

In case you care about the minors, as I do, here's a summary of what's next:
  • The minor leagues will start play on or about May 4.
  • For the month of April, teams will operate an alternate site as last year. The Mets alternate site will be in Brooklyn as last year. Teams will be allowed to carry up to 28 players at their alternate site, plus injury rehabs of which the Mets have five. The alternate site players can play scrimmages against other alternate sites. Then in May, the alternate site will be disbanded and the players will report to their minor league teams.
  • For the dozens of Met minor leaguers who were not invited to MLB winter camp and/or alternate site, their spring training starts now. They will report to St. Lucie on Thursday I think. After a month of training, they too will report to their minor league clubs.
Here's the minor league club breakdown:
  • AAA - Syracuse - same as last year.
  • AA - Binghamton - same as last year.
  • High A - Brooklyn - was St. Lucie last year.
  • Low A - St. Lucie - was Columbia last year.
  • Short A - DISCONTINUED - was Brooklyn last year.
  • Rookie - Gulf Coast Mets, I THINK they will field two teams - Was Kingsport and Gulf Coast last year.
  • Latino Rookie - Two teams in Dominican Summer League.

so we only lost one minor league team? I thought 120 minor league teams were cut.

I don't think 120 minor league teams were cut. I think 120 minor league teams remain. Each team has four: AAA, AA, High A, and Low A. Short A and Rookie League are gone.

What then about the rookies playing for the Gulf Coast Mets (which may field two teams)? If I understand correctly, that is a "training site" team which is not considered "official" by MLB. The players are not covered by the contractual agreements made by MLB as part of the contraction.

Two Met minor league teams were cut, Rookie League Kingsport, and Low A Columbia (which was replaced by St. Lucie, which in turn was replaced by Brooklyn).

Have to sign Conforto, Thor, Stroman, and even degrom if 2/3 of the pitchers have standout seasons.
