OT: RAIN TO SNOW OVERNIGHT INTO THURSDAY 4-8 INCHES FOR MOST

Not open for further replies.
Just had a nice moderate band come thru Jackson/Freehold. Looks like 7 on the ground. Impressive second wave.

It has been non-stop in Brick since 8am this morning. Thought it was a bust when I awoke this morning.

Just shoveled. I measured 8". Still snowing good.

In the Philly (western) 'burbs around Villanova, It had been snowing non-stop since 5:15 this AM when the phone for school closing rang. Finally stopped about an hour ago.

Just measured 2 different spots, and both were about the same, right around 11 inches to a foot.

WAAY more than the Philly media were calling for.

8 1/2 Monroe now still coming down and no plows in sight since one made a pass around 3 in front of house but not on side street where driveway is. Cant wait to clean up that mess when it gets done later. Looks like almost over from radar, wonder if that detached band by Scranton/Allentown will make it here later????????

Just shoveled for 2nd time. We must have 7-8" here on the coast.

EDIT: News 12 says Wall Twsp has had the most snow with 8 inches and counting.

As of 6:30 am, we finally have 1" on the ground, 2.5 hours after it started, and temps have dropped to 31F. Snow falling moderately to almost heavily right now (visib slightly more than 1/4 mile) - gorgeous flakes. Was just outside for a walk and it's great snowball snow, at this time. Models show us snowing at a good clip until at least 1-2 pm, so hopefully we'll get to 6" (4" seems pretty certain to get to the 4-8" forecast range).
As of 7:30 am we're up to 1.75" (about 3/4" in the last hour - would've thought it was 1" per hour rates, but the ruler never lies, lol) and it's still 31F. It's just ripping out there - borderline heavy - this is going to be an awesome storm to watch from my recliner. But I also urge folks to get out and about in it - words don't do justice to how gorgeous it is out there right now. Can't wait for enough snow to make a good snow angel, lol...
2.75" at 9 am and it's dropped to 30F - moderate to occasionally heavy snow...6" is a lock here and hopefully more...
3.25" as of 10 am and it's now 28F. Much smaller, drier flakes - been mostly moderate snow the last hour - just missed that death band to our south. Damn. Still a great storm so far. At least 6" looks pretty likely...
4" on the ground as of 11:15 am and it's now 27F and snowing moderately. At this point, I'm expecting 7-8", based on radar trends - looks like at least another 3-5 hours of ~0.75"/hr snowfall on the way. NW extent of the snowfall has only moved SE about 30-40 miles over the past 3-4 hours, from the Scranton area to the Mt. Pocono area, when it was expected to have sunk SE much further by now. That's why they raised the warnings for the Lehigh Valley and Warren/Morris, as those places are now likely to get 6" - could even get that in Sussex, too. And there's plenty of subtropical moisture streaming up towards us - if it doesn't get shunted SE faster, we could actually get 10" or more in most of the area.
Went outside to shovel at 1:15 pm and we were up to 6" and down to 24F. Took an hour to shovel and for most of that hour it was pouring heavy snow with visibility a little less than 1/4 mile (not as heavy as the 2.5" per hour 25:1 snow we got a few weeks ago) and my measurement at 2:15 pm was 7". Wow!

It's now down to 23F/21F with 92% RH, but with 20 DBZ radar echoes overhead, it's it stopped snowing. Turns out I hit the "drywall" where precip was showing by the Ft. Dix radar, but wasn't actually reaching the ground (virga) due to infiltration of cold air from the NW drying the surface out and leading to sublimation of the falling snow.

Anyway, the linked radar from EWR clearly showed the 20-30 mile wide "dry line" approaching from NW to SE, engulfing me in dryness from about 2:05 to 2:45 pm, while the Ft. Dix radar showed 20-25 DBZ virga (probably because the beam is "lower" and more local for the airport and "saw" the lack of precip better). FWIW, the 0.20 reflectivity (48 mile range) worked best for me, probably since I'm only 15 miles away. Bookmark worthy. Time to go measure again (been working)...

http://www.wundergro.../nj/newark/ewr/
4 pm report (forgot to post): Had a lull with little snow, due to that "drywall" that came through, from 2:00 to 2:45 or so. Been snowing lightly to occasionally moderately and we've picked up another 1/2" of snow and stand at 7.5" for the storm. Would love to make 8" and think I will with that next band on my doorstep. 22F.

7 pm report: 8.0", possibly final - maybe another tenth or two if that last band has any juice to it. Went back outside to do my 3rd and final shoveling around 6 pm and then measured around 6:45 pm, after the light snow had stopped and I had picked up another 1/2" in the last couple of hours for a solid 8" pretty much everywhere. With so little wind and minimal compaction, measuring was easy this time (not common this winter). Total snow depth is now 18-20", on average. Best storm of the season and great job by the NWS.

When measuring make sure you are not measuring previous storms

Wound up with 7 in Belle Mead/Hillsborough havent been bac up to Somervillw but believe they got slightly less

Looks like the MILFs finally got the 8+ inches they've been waiting for all winter long. I hope that satisfies them until next winter.

So looking at the 7day forecast which looks dry and warmer...will this be the last weather thread until the spring game?

Anyway my town Croydon got 8.8 inch. My store 3.5 miles away got "just" 5.25. Biggest snow around here was King of Prussia which got over 10in.

So the winter lovers finally got their winter storm. Enough now! Time for spring!! Daylight Savings starts Sunday.

Easily 10" in East Windsor, probably a bit more. Local roads are a sheet of ice this morning, be careful if you're going anywhere.

got a good 7-8 inches here in Ocean City, luckily the sun is out and hopefully we get some melting over the next few days.

Yes- the chances go down but you can still get storms in March. Does anyone remember the April 1982 or 1983 snow storm?

We got about 6.5" of snow up in Wayne. I cleared off around 5" yesterday at 3'ish, then another 1.5 more this morning.

Yep, didn't we get something like 5-6 inches? I remember being on campus for that.

Also, didn't we have a storm in March/April 1984? I remember I was living in Richardson Apts at the time, and we went out and had a snowball fight that evening with residents from Johnson/Nichols Apts.

Possibly, but March averages more snow than December, so not likely. No snow for at least a week, but if the medium range models are to be believed (and they're not, but they can indicate potential), we might get another major storm next weekend that could be a big mixed bag of precip.

Major snowstorms after about 3/15 are pretty rare for the I-95 corridor (not so rare well N/W), but that 4/6/82 storm was one of my favorites. We got a foot in NB - I was a sophomore and it was not well predicted at all - school was closed and there were massive snowball fights between folks in the Quads and the River Dorms across George St. and any cars driving by were getting pummelled.

Just a beautiful 1/2" from this past storm here in central Orange cty...18" still on the ground, but I'll take it!

Come on March sun angles...do your thing!!!

Yep, my buddy up in Binghamton says they didn't even get a flake up there.

WP - aren't you a met by major (not sure if practicing)? If so, you're in the vast minority of mets that don't like snow - what happened?

The funny thing was that the snow was gone as fast as it came. Crazy storm.

We celebrated the day off by getting a keg and carrying it back to Clothier. And it was totally legit back then too.

I'm a meteorologist/climatologist by undergraduate and graduate degrees...I practice on the side and consult some...most of my practice was with the USAF Weather Agency...until I retired in 2011...I hate snow...I hate shoveling it, driving on it, and it depresses me...no joke, this has been an utterly miserable winter. I know I know it begs the question what the **** are you still doing in the Hudson valley? I retired from the military at the lowest point of the local housing market...so selling was a non option...Texas is where my heart is...or Omaha (winters there can be colder, but there's a lot more variable and DRIER!!)

...soon! (...and yes I realize I'm in the minority of weather queen when it comes to snow...that's ok, as a gay man and hispanic I'm used to the minority bin!).

Now...late April - Sep rocks up here...so holding on to that like a warm blanket!! :-)

Sounds like you need a winter home down in Texas - most snowbirds go to FL, since TX can still get a lot colder than most of FL (unless it's the TX Gulf coast), but you can be a trendsetter, lol. Maybe sell now and get places in both locations that add up to what you have now, assuming that's doable. Must've been tough to be in the closet that long - I mean the snow closet, as I'm guessing your meteorological USAF buddies would've wanted to toss you from their ranks for being a snow-hater much more than over your sexuality. :>)

Snow became a forecast game at the "old" met building in Cook...so it was fun from that perspective. Other than NY, most my USAF assignments were pretty snow-free, so it was an occasional treat (a 6" snow in Omaha was pretty epic)...here you sneeze hard enough and a few inches fall...dang those local effects. Snow as a kid at the shore (Monmouth Cty) meant it would be gone in a few days...snow on the ground here since Jan 20th :-(

When it comes to weather types, I'm more into severe weather...I get more excited about lightning, tropical weather, urban heat islands, climate and climate change stuff than synoptic weather...I know, an ODD DUCK in SO many ways! Oh, and I don't watch or care for the weather channel...that usually nets me a few raised eye brows!

The brilliant sunshine today is INVIGORATING!!!

So this call for suppression and the call you made for suppression on the 2/17 storm, in which you said there'd be no snow north of the Mason-Dixon line, when we ended up with 3-5" throughout Central Jersey, didn't work out so well.

I assume you were expecting me to bring this up after all the grief you gave me last March when a couple of storms were suppressed to the south of 195 (as you predicted), leaving most of Central Jersey dry, after predictions of several inches.

A strong polar vortex does not always suppress a storm and speaking authoritatively doesn't make it any more likely you'll be right. You excoriated me last year. I prefer to simply point out you were wrong. Awaiting your pithy response...

That's what you get from me.

Ya know what you don't get from me? 1000 words about how even though I was wrong I was really right and how there are multiple and various shades of "right" in my wrongness because after all, I have several degrees in a field completely unrelated to the multiple things in which I consider myself an expert.

I submit that you, who strive so hard to teach people lessons, could stand to learn one yourself - sometimes wrong is wrong. Accept it and shut the f*ck up. See, that way, you don't have to endure long-winded posts from other people about how much of a boring dick you are.

And e5fdny is right - you really do spend more time talking about yourself than anyone, ever, in the history of this board. If there was an Annual Mr. Television Award For Self-Aggrandizement you would win every single time.
