OT: RAIN TO SNOW OVERNIGHT INTO THURSDAY 4-8 INCHES FOR MOST

Not open for further replies.
Game on! Snow mixing in with the sleet as of 3:50 am. NWS in Philly has kept the Winter Storm Warnings for all of the counties south of 78 in PA/NJ, for 4-8" of snow by early afternoon and the NWS in NYC has kept the warnings up for NE NJ (up to Essex County), NYC and LI. Advisories still up for north of there for 3-5" (Sussex/Morris/Warren and Poconos/Lehigh Valley and Hudson Valley/CT). Snowmaps haven't changed appreciably.

Snowing moderately now, with a coating on the ground, including the streets - 32F, as it's dropped 4F in the last 45 minutes.

Started switching over about 4am in union county, nothing sticking yet.

I heard the snow plow go by about 4:45. Got up and there's a little over an inch in Nockamixon, upper Bucks Co. I'm probably 40 miles north of Whitebus, plus elevation over 500 feet. We definitely got about 4 inches from the last storm.

My neighbor usually plows my driveway, but he is away.

Guess I will be taking it down a couple inches at a time.

Snowing lightly in Hillsborough about 4:30 and now is starting to stick to roads. How many peeps are going into work thinking they will have no problems until they realize they have to get home?

Looks like it's been snowing in Wayne for about an hour. Just got the call that school's closed. Linda's gonna be thrilled about that. Snow's coming down lightly now - less than an inch on the ground.

6:10AM light snow in North Brunswick - sticking to the cars, but not really the street or sidewalk.

11:00 am opening for state offices seems odd, isn't that going to put people on the roads at the height of the accumulating snow?

Just heard from Bill Evans storm should be wrapping up in the afternoon.

As of 6:30 am, we finally have 1" on the ground, 2.5 hours after it started, and temps have dropped to 31F. Snow falling moderately to almost heavily right now (visib slightly more than 1/4 mile) - gorgeous flakes. Was just outside for a walk and it's great snowball snow, at this time. Models show us snowing at a good clip until at least 1-2 pm, so hopefully we'll get to 6" (4" seems pretty certain to get to the 4-8" forecast range).

For those thinking this storm is a bust, think again. Yes, the changeover to snow was a couple of hours slower than expected, but that should be balanced by the fact that we're modeled to get more precip from here on out than originally thought, with the end result that 4-8" is still a good call. I'm expecting about 6" here. Great write-up by the NWS in NYC:

BIGGEST MODEL DIFFERENCES COMPARED TO 12 TO 24 HOURS AGO WAS SLOWER
COLUMN COOLING EARLY THIS MORNING BY ABOUT 3-4 HOURS...BUT A
SLIGHTLY FARTHER NORTH TRACK OF MOISTURE PLUME THROUGH THE DAY
TODAY MEANING HIGHER QPF. OVERALL THIS IS LENDING TO A FAIRLY
SIMILAR FORECAST OF SNOW AMOUNTS.

PRECIP EXPECTED TO CONTINUE TO TRANSITION TO ALL SNOW THROUGH 10Z
DOWN TO THE COAST WITH COLUMN COOLING. THE STEADY PROGRESS IS SEEN
IN OBS AND DUAL-POL. ARCTIC COLD FRONTAL PASSAGE EXPECTED FROM NW TO
SE BETWEEN 10Z TO 15Z...WITH TEMPS FALLING INTO LOWER TO MID 30S
INTO THE MID-UPPER 20S LATER THIS MORNING...AND DOWN INTO THE LOWER
20S THIS AFTERNOON. ROAD CONDITIONS EXPECTED TO DETERIORATE IN
ITS WAKE...AND COINCIDING AT LEAST PART OF MORNING COMMUTE. ICY
CONDITIONS AND SNOW COVERED ROADS EXPECTED FOR AFT/EVE COMMUTE AS
WELL.

POTENTIAL FOR SNOW TO BE HEAVY AT TIMES THIS MORNING INTO EARLY
AFTERNOON ALONG THE COASTAL PLAIN...WITH MODEST FRONTOGENETIC
FORCING COUPLED WITH STRONG DYNAMICS. SREF IS INDICATING
LIKELY PROB OF 1" PER HOUR SNOWFALL RATES DURING THIS TIME FOR
NYC/NJ QPF
BETWEEN 7 AM AND 1 PM ACROSS SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF LI/NYC. SNOW
SHOULD GRADUALLY TAPER OFF IN INTENSITY AND COVERAGE FROM NW TO SE
THIS AFTERNOON AS TROUGH APPROACHES AND OFFSHORE
STATIONARY FRONT SLIDES WELL OFFSHORE.

REGION IS ON EDGE OF A TIGHT PRECIP GRADIENT. HAVE RELIED ON A
OPER/HIGH RES QPF...WITH GENERALLY A 1/10TH
OR LESS QPF ACROSS
SOUTHEASTERN QPF REMAINS
ALONG SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE NYC/NJ LI. SNOW TO LIQUID
RATIOS WILL INCREASE THROUGH THE MORNING INTO AFTERNOON...WITH
HEAVY WET SNOW EARLY THIS MORNING BECOME LIGHT AND POWDERY BY THIS
AFTERNOON.

IN TERMS OF SNOWFALL AMOUNTS...A GENERAL 4 TO 7 INCHES OF SNOW STILL
EXPECTED FOR NYC/NJ LI...WITH HIGHEST AMOUNTS ACROSS
SOUTHERN PORTIONS. WARNING CONTINUES HERE. POTENTIAL FOR 2 TO 5
INCHES FOR COASTAL CT AND SOUTHEASTERN CT...THE REST OF NE
NJ...AND SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF LOWER HUDSON VALLEY. HIGHEST AMOUNTS
ACROSS SOUTHERN SECTIONS. ADVISORY CONTINUES FOR THIS AREA...AND
HAVE EXPANDED ADVISORY INTO NORTHERN MIDDLESEX AND NORTHERN NEW

1/2 INCH THERE ALREADY. FINALLY...WITH A SHARP GRADIENT IN PRECIP
ACROSS AREAS FAR N&W OF NYC...BETWEEN DUSTING TO 3 INCHES EXPECTED
FROM NW TO SE...BUT NOT ENOUGH CONFIDENCE FOR AN ADVISORY AT THIS
TIME.

already about 3 - 4 inches on the ground here in western Morris county...

Plows just came through for the second time.... time to hit the road

Highly recommend getting out now and removing bottom layer ASAP. If you are in areas like here where there was a steady rain before the change over you can save your self a big problem later. This made for a thick layer of slush almost instantly. Even with about a 1/4 of an inch it's wet and heavy. With the temps plummeting thru the day this bottom layer could be a thick layer of ice.

Snow seems to be tiny light beads instead of flakes at this point.

Philly TV has only reduced forecast from last night from 4-7 to 4-6 this morning and still calling for 6-8 in the heart of south Jersey. So even with the late start no big change

Rutgers continues to say it will open at noon, so I will go in to school. Yes, that means staff will be coming in at the height of the storm. As with other areas, Cherry Hill changed over late, and I still can't be sure that it's all snow.

Work is open here in Wayne, I'm in. Wife is off, schools in Clifton closed. Isn't there a state of emergency or something?

As of 7:30 am we're up to 1.75" (about 3/4" in the last hour - would've thought it was 1" per hour rates, but the ruler never lies, lol) and it's still 31F. It's just ripping out there - borderline heavy - this is going to be an awesome storm to watch from my recliner. But I also urge folks to get out and about in it - words don't do justice to how gorgeous it is out there right now. Can't wait for enough snow to make a good snow angel, lol...

Absolutely great point. I'm just about to go out and do my first shoveling for that exact reason (plus it gives me an excuse to be outside in the snow).

So many people write 'here' without saying where 'here' actually is, thus making their info nearly useless, lol.

Well if you been reading this thread from the beginning there is no doubt where my here is Abro
laugh.r191677.gif
. Now get out and shovel!

About 1.5 inches here...after being above freezing for the first 4 hours of the storm its finally dipped to 31 so that will with accumulations as some was melting. Paved and treated surfaces have less than inch here but grass and car tops doing better. Snow should continue in varying intensties until at least noon and then we'll see what the radar offers in the afternoon. I think 4-8 inches covers everything. Im predicting 5.5 in BelleMead

In Chester NJ....

Been snowing (lightly) since at least 4:30 AM. There is already 3-4 inches on the ground and it's coming down pretty heavily now. Schools are closed here. Buildings are also closed at my office in Princeton. I have what seems like a 24" - 30" Base or packed snow on my Deck from all the accumulation this winter .... LOL.

I know where your 'here' is Whitebus, but that's from knowing you a bit, lol. This thread way toooo long to start from the beginning. PS- How is Scarelett in the snow?

PPS- Snowing hard now 'here' in NW Essex County, about to text my manager and say roads are too dangerous to be on the driving all day (sales). Will do Admin work from home.

Followed your advice, but even though it was steady rain out here at the shore, no slush underneath. I'm hanging inside and will hit the driveway with the snow blower when it stops.

Excellent call. I'm pretty close to White Bus in Bucks Cty PA. and I just got in from shoveling a solid 2" of slush that would have been a bear to clean up if I waited. Coming down hard, Fox Philly says 5-8" for our area. John Bolaris has 6-8". Either way we still have a way to go.

BTW, I want to thank all who contribute to these weather threads. Last night my wife wanted to know what the weather looks like for today and she asked "What do the Rutgers Football guys have to say, they're usually right".

I think like most dogs, she loves it. Scarlet turns into a 6 moth old puppy on a day like this. However she wants to eat the snow as well which isn't a good idea. Especially for a Great Danes who have sensitive digestive systems. Which is also why I don't let her have any people food at the tailgates.

I have to work this afternoon and will need to hit the road around noon. I manage two stores and both are less than 3 miles away so it's not a long ride.

Don't eat the yellow snow!

That's just silly. Sounds like they are working off an older forecast.

I may be wrong and I am sure I will hear about if I am but I don't think state of emergency means you can't drive unless they specifically put that into place. It usually just means allocating extra emergency personal
