OT: Very Cold Temperatures This Weekend

By early Friday morning, a very strong north/south oriented cold front will be just off to our west to start the day. And worth noting, guidance continues to trend a bit faster with the timing of the front moving through. Right around 6-7am there may still not be too much going on precip in much of the area but indications are a strong line of showers may develop right along and ahead of the front as it approaches from the west. Also, there will be another surge of southerly winds developing with a LLJ surge ahead of the front. All of this will be in response to the incredible amount of forcing and energy this system will have. Expect the front to then move through the area quickly...likely arriving in our western zones (Chester, Berks Co PA) by around 8-9am, moving through Philly around late morning and then clearing the coast in the early afternoon. Expect there will be widespread winds gusting 40 to 50 mph Friday (first out of the south ahead of the front and then shifting to westerly) but the other concern we have is that within the strong line of showers along the front we could see winds gusting upwards of 50-60 mph in spots heightening the threat for damage and power outages. Also, rain likely end as a quick shot of snow as the front moves through as temperatures plunge below freezing. Snow accumulation should be minor and confined mainly N/W of I-95 but the concern we have is a rapid of wet surfaces causing widespread icy conditions...potentially even flash freezes. Then by late day as temperatures continue to plunge, wind chills will be an issue and hence the Wind Chill Advisories now in effect. So all and all, a wild day weather wise and it`s worth noting that the combined impacts of any power outages due to the strong winds plus the extreme cold to follow could be significant. Finally, there will be continuing rises on the rivers continuing through late day Friday into the weekend and this is discussed in the hydro section below.

That's the spirit of season.... Sheeeeesshhh.... You guys need to find a way to move past this. Work together. Keep it positive and community-minded. At least in these weather threads.
The good news is by Saturday night the winds will die down and visibility will be good. Perfect night for delivering presents!

the flash freeze tomorrow has the potential to be a serious issue...much more worthy of a thread to the last two failed threads

its going to depend on how quickly the rain ends and how quickly then the cold rushes in. Be on the lookout for those going to the game at the RAC tomorrow night

When it happens, the road crews will have a hard time catching up in real time
I remember this happening on Christmas Eve about 20 years ago. There was black ice all over 287 driving home from my parents Cars we’re going 5-10 MPH and still flying off the road into the woods. TAlk about white knuckle driving

Does anyone know if the Bucknell team was able to make it to NJ ahead of this storm?

Coldest I have ever been in was in Ames, IA in January 1985. Super Bowl weekend. It was -30 with -90 wind chill factor. When you went outside you could feel all your joints stiffening. It was one of those Alberta Clippers that lasted 4+ days. When temperatures were back in the 20-30's, people were wearing shorts.

Did #'s take control of your account?

Summary: it's gonna get really cold and there may be floods.

Pretty much everywhere. I live in Georgia and it was 23 when I left home this morning around 6:45. Has dropped to 16-17 now and windy. It might hit 20 today before dropping to 10-12 by tomorrow morning.

Next 4 hours will be wild...from 50s to 20s. Rain to snow with flash freeze.
Right now, no rain in No. Plfd. The wind over the last few hours has helped dry things out a bit in advance of a flash freeze. Not sure how potent the squall line will be. They can flame out or be very intense. I'm surprised at your enthusiasm for a rain and cold weather thread. 😃

C'mon dude! You're ridiculous! You're such an ass. 😂
Who me? 😁

Because its dramatic

More meaningful then the 2 threads for rainstorms where snow was confined to the nether regions

Radar shows a fair amount of moisture in this second wave moving into western parts of NJ right now.

Rain was underwhelming in Central nj
Rain in Bergen County was crazy last night. Heaviest was around 3-5 AM. Went down to check the basement just in case. All good. I expect no ice since this wind should dry up a lot of the moisture until it gets cold.

The key will be whatever is in that second wave coming through. Hopefully it farts out.

Thanks for asking.

High Tide was 7am. I moved my car at 530am so i saw the fire truck and police heading east. Flooding came right up to the house in the back. Have couple inches of standing water still which will be ice by tonight. This was probably the 2nd worst since...you know.
Stay safe. Hope that is the worst, or will the next tide be higher?

Rain in western Bergen was crazy last night, woke us all up. Winds picking up now

No.

Timing was optimal for 1 flood cycle. Moon Tide with 30 mph winds out of the E and ESE pushing the water inland . NWS/Stevens underestimated the totals. That doesn't normally happen as they're usually very good.

Out and about at 5:30 (Brielle Rd was already flooded and Main St appeared to be) was a bit early for me but I treated myself to a coffee, chocolate muffin, and newspaper and was at the barber shop when it opened at 800 lol. Back home by 9:15.

Yup. It was projected to be worse the further north you went. As I said I had water up to the back of the house but that's just the storage space.

Will the flash freeze be as worse or much better than the one on Monday morning,Dec.28,1992?
That one hit just before the rush hour, completely stopping traffic on most,if not all, roads. Many people gave up going to work on that day.
