Scott Van Pelt and another sportscaster laughing histerically, even two days after the game about the score and the spread of the game. Then goes on to mock us by saying "At least you Striped the Birthplace".

Embarrassing!!!!

This is why we need to stop chasing after the gimmicks and overdone fads like blackouts, trying to stripe the stands and the like and get back to the basics.

...and nobody will give 2 shits by week's end what SVP said. Teams get ripped every week, by these guys, and then they go on to play in New Year's Day Bowls and/or BCS bowls a couple of years later. Lots and lots of them have over the years. It sucks, but it is what it is for now, and when we turn this around the press - as they did for a few years - WILL love us again. Well, at least the national press, lol!

Honestly though striping the stadium was a terrible idea and didn't work at all. We had a hard enough time getting people to the stadium and then we wanted them to coordinate by what section they were in. They were asking too much for this fandom. A simple BLACKOUT like we normal do well would have worked great and looked better on TV because the striping wouldn't even have looked good if it worked.

I think what else hurts perception-wise with this game - in relation to typical blowouts around the nation the past decade where the winning team scores in the 60's or 70's - is that most of those scores as such come from the B12 and Pac-12 where there are lots of teams who aren't overly concerned with D so, when an Oregon or Baylor puts up gaudy #'s, they tend to give up a few TD's as well. Unfortunately we're in a conference with some great D's - potentially really great ones this year - and happened to play them back-to-back which obviously didn't help in a slew of ways.

Surprisingly the one picture posted here yesterday, taken from the upper west tier, of the student section and east side, looked pretty damn good. It was the north and east, however, that looked awful from my seats in 121. I mean half of it was maize and blue.

IMHO - don't do it next year, don't plan it ahead of time, wait until we're good again, do it against a non-Mich/PSU/OSU fan base, and announce it about 2 weeks prior to the game. PLENTY of time to get the word out.

It also:

1) RAINED (so many were wearing panchos and raincoats ((tried buying mine 3:30AM Saturday in Walmart-it was tough enough to avoid blue and yellow (had 2 layers of black underneath).

2) Many Michigan fans (in yellow ponchos and raincoats) were in the stands.

Maybe next time they WAIT until they know there's not a hurricane and the visiting teams colors aren't that of raincoats (esp yellow).

see: teams who wear red but aren't named Nebraska or Wisconsin

Have you ever seen Van Pelt.

He's an ugly human...no matter how you slice it.

Yea the striping just really didn't look good on TV.

Sidenote, Van Pelt is at it again. He mentions the Rutgers game again now during the MLB playoff highlights. He's not letting up on us.

If only we could get this much promo when we God forbid do something good.

Should forget gimmicks??? How is striping the stadium a gimmick. It's as much for the crowd as it us for the football team. Think before you type. If it didn't rain it would have been pretty cool

Even if it didn't rain, the north and west end zones had approximately 10,000 visiting Michigan fans, which looked more like a maize/blue/black checkerboard. Next time we try something like that, it should definitely be against a lesser-traveling opponent, one with scarlet/red colors, or both.

dude so what? Visiting fans are part of the game. The place was striped pretty nice outside of the yellow ponchos. Such a non issue.

it always going to be somewhat of a fail doing it against schools like Penn State or Michigan. The AD should know this but for some reason they dont

as for the bashing we lost 78-0, we deserve every minute of it, it is what it is, living through the 80s and 90s Im not fazed by this because its happened before. I think some newer fans are having problems dealing with losing but you just have to accept it and move on. RUs perception is terrible and will remain so until it can start winning 8 plus games

You can try to spin it raining or nobody watches ESPN but perception is reality. 78-0 is 78-0 whether you watch Van Pelt or not. And he's one of the better ESPN personalities.

A good way to stop the negativity in the media is to beat Illinois. This will help stop the attacks and keep our recruits interested. Lose to Illinois at home and there will be no tourniquet big enough to stop the hemorrhaging.

C'mon with the whining. We got embarrassed. Nothing we can do but take it for one week. Hopefully we change the narrative. Think of how different the coverage can be if we win this week ("resilient", "bounced back", "didn't quit", etc.)

Yep. Some think that tOSU's D might be the best they've ever had, and at the same time think that this year Michigan's is better than tOSU's. Defense is valued in this conference, and teams with an offense have a shot at making a lot of noise.

Most B1G teams, including UMD, will get destroyed by Michigan and tOSU. Aside from Wisconsin and Nebraska there is clearly a huge gap.

Was this you in the fight with "michighan ass holes" (see plumbers crack)? :D

Guy never played a sport in his life. Laughs at kids when they lose. Please.

Don't hate on Van Pelt because of him laughing at it. 78-0 is not something you can really defend. Just don't watch sports TV or media until after next Ilini game.

It's not like Maryland played well, I have no interest in hearing how great PSU is now they wiped the floor with UMD. If I tune into BTN this week that's all we'll hear how PSU dominated MD and how Rutgers was a joke. No way around it. It's a week to week sport.

I wonder how much of a correlation there is between forum members who get easily offended by people outside our program being disrespectful of our program and forum members with long ignore lists here on Rivals. :)

You do blackouts and stripe outs against the Howards and Norfolk States not Michigan
