Caleb and Cody Martin

Not sure what to think here. Positives and negatives. Are they leaving because of playing time for 1 of the brothers? The brother with the less stats is said, by the article, to be the best defensive player on the team. Outside possibility they graduate and possibly play next year? They both got 25+ MPG which validates they have some talent.

Don't like seeing both are transferring because one of them might not get the minutes desired .
But right now beggars can't be choosy and RU needs all the talent it can get along with probably having the minutes those brothers want not being a problem when the Martins are eligible to play .

Just don't want to see a situation where both Martin brothers are unhappy because one of them lost their playing-time to someone who won the rights to those minutes by playing better.

You DO realize that the "less" talented brother is still, likely, more talented than most of our roster, right?

Yes I do and that's why I said: "RU needs all the talent it can get along with probably having the minutes those brothers want not being a problem when the Martins are eligible to play ."

But that doesn't mean one or both of the Martins are assured of getting all the minutes they want if Rutgers is able to bring in better talent than usual or develop someone that will earn more minutes than one or both of the brothers .
If that happens I wonder how they would react based on the rumor that their leaving the WolfPack because one of them might not receive the playing time they want at NC St next year..

I really wonder about people sometimes. You take this guys NOW, no questions asked, if they want to come here. SMDH. :chairshot::chairshot::chairshot::chairshot::chairshot:
No crystal ball for 2018, but we know what we have for this year without adding players. I don't think this staff will mortgage the future just to fill spots. Hopefully with a little coaching what we have will get better or at least B1G competitive. No guarantees either way !

Any soph getting double digits for an acc team is a no brainer

We need offense....badly
Also help on the D part of game is needed.
Seems one helps the O while the brother is more of a D man .
Until RU starts pulling in the talent, transfers like the Martin brothers could help when
the recruits start looking at RU more than they are now.
Not much is expected for the 2016-17 season, so maybe Caleb and Cody might
help the team in 2017-18 enough to have been worth waiting for.

It's a gamble, but the way the 2016-17 season probably will be , it might be worth
gambling on the Martins to make RU MBB a program HS talent look on more favorably.

Caleb Martin is clearly a three point specialist. He made 2.4 per game on 6.8 attempts for a 35.7% shooting percentage. That accounts for 7.2 of his 11.5 points per game. He made only 1.4 two point baskets a game with a 43.75% field goal percentage, and he shot 67.2% from the free throw line on 2.1 attempts per game. So basically, he's a good, solid, but not spectacular, outside threat without much of an inside game. I think everyone here would acknowledge that we could use some better three point shooting, but the question is will Pikiell want him taking that many threes a game to get his points? Because if he doesn't, Caleb Martin will be unlikely to average double digits in scoring. Looking at our team last year, Mike Williams led all players with 4.9 three point attempts per game. Looking at Stony Brook's stats from last year, Pikiell had a guy in Puriefoy who took 6.1 threes a game and Sekunda who took 4.7. So maybe he fits. But the two guys from Stony Brook shot about 40% from three last year, higher than both Martin (35.7) and Williams (31.4%).

Another case of kids being unhappy now that the assistant coaches who recruited them are no longer with the program. They have no real connection with their head coach and next year could be getting scant minutes of playing time.

Why are these kids so connected to assistant coaches? Is it the coach or what the coach might be offering? I find it crazy that someone like sanders would make a decision based on an assistant coach.

Typically an assistant coach is the lead recruiter for prospects. In many cases the person the prospect builds the strongest relationship with and the head coach comes in To "close".

Russ, depends on the new HC and how the initial talk he has with each guy on the roster goes. FHJ cr*pped all over the guys recruited by Gary Waters, giving lots of their minutes to his Next Big Stars and berating them, but not all coaches operate that way.

The question posed earlier was a good one on whether we want to absorb 2 scholarships for potentially just one actual season of play for both players....since they would have graduated after Year 4 or in their 2nd year at RU (or Cal etc.), they would or could potentially depart after one playing season at RU, then becoming "grad transfers". That would be a lot for any school to consider as a transfer in, even if it's talent deprived or looking for experienced minutes to be played in the 2017-18 season. It would solve a talent/minutes gap for Year 2 of the Pikiell regime, but would be a strong consideration for any school to take on both players.

I think it all depends on quality of players he could bring in for next year. If those spots are empty or roster fillers we really wouldn't be wasting a spot next year. The prospect of having 2 potential guys in rotation up and leaving in '18-'19 is the bigger issue it appears. You never have complete control of your roster, but having 2 guys who turn free agent after 1 year with essentially no notice could set the program back. Pikiel can't recruit based on 2 guys leaving.

NC State doesn't have a new head coach. The Martin brothers were recruited to NCSU during Gottfried's tenure.

Sometimes an assistant sells the HC on a prospect and after a season the HC decides to recruit over them, which is what I think happened there with Maverick Rowan coming in.

FIG...you've mentioned this scenario a few times. Any examples of guys actually doing it? Anything is possible but this seems like a very unlikely scenario unless the guys hate the coaches or their teammates.

They would sit out a year learning a new system, play a year in that new system, then go to another school to learn and play in another new system for 1 year. Only guys with "issues" move around that much.

Right now California only has one open scholarship left
That means nothing. I know teams that had 14 guys on Halloween then moved one off of scholarship to get to the 13 limit.

Good programs always work the numbers out if they really want a player(s)

Russ, do you mean moving a guy off the roster or moving them to a financial aid package based on need?

Moving them off of an athletic scholarship for men's basketball, but still on the team.

This 5th year transfer thing has really started to take off recently. This seems like a situation where you only need 1 of 2 unhappy as opposed to 1 of 1. Maybe my probabilities are a bit high.

The 5th year transfer thing is rampant now. The NCAA may start to close the loophole inside way.

You guys realize if they leave we get those scholarships back to offer someone else right lol

It seems unlikely they grab any superstars for next year now anyway and they could help the team show improvement to help future recruiting. One or two bad seasons to start could kill future top prospects from wanting to commit here. Need to show some improvement to prove its not the same ole Rutgers

PG Mullins from Columbia to Cal

Savon Goodman 5th yr ASU transfer to LaSalle

Both have immediate eligibility

I still am a bit concerned about this as they may be outstanding players but we could tie up 2 scholarships for 3 years to play 2 or two years and only get one year of their playing and graduating and than leave as a grad transfer. They both play small forward and we already have Lauent and either Bullock and possibly Thiam. Signing them may also cause us not to have two scholarships for 2017 or 2018 potential players. I think Pikiell will make the right decision.

if these are the type of players that would do that...I think steve P will pass....

He will do due diligence to see if they are here for the duration

In the end, you need to build up the level of play for guys in this program. As long as there are no glaring red flags, you take guys of this talent level.
