Eric Chavez the new hitting coach. Poached from the yanks who just hired him last month as their assistant hitting coach. Was a very good player for Oakland.

This was the HEADLINE GRABBER???

Actually the name might have been the headline grabber. Perhaps because we poached him from the yankees?

To clear the air: Mets were considering Eric Chavez to become their bench coach before deciding he's a better fit as hitting coach, per sources. The team now intends to name a younger, analytics-driven individual as its bench coach.

Maybe they just don't think he's very good at this?

I mean, there are 29 other teams that haven't seen fit to hire him either.
Did you think he's a Mets for life? Sometimes, you don't want the chance from another organization. I know from experience. I was offered an opportunity to start my coaching career in college, but my loyalty to my HS was more desirable.

He must really suck if he won a league championship as a manager.
He might at that. In the low minors, winning is not the primary objective. Player development is.

I am not advocating for or against Alfonso. I have no idea how good a coach or manager he is. But I do know two things:

1) The Mets owe him NOTHING.

2) No one else has hired him in over two years.

Any validity that Mets may be interested in Schwarber? Signing him is 1 way to stop him from mauling us.

That’s cool but there should also be an 8 up there for Carter and of course Yogi.
8 should be up there for Carter and Carter alone. Love Yogi, but he's a Yankee. He did manage the Mets to a WS, but you don't retire somebody's number for that. If you did, you'd also have to retire Bobby Valentine and Terry Collins.

Agree with this . For the Met’s, only managers that are no brainer to retire are Casey and Gil. There could be an argument for Davey but he should have won at least a 2nd one with that team.

What are realistic fan expectations for the Mets this year? For the Yankees if they do not make a deep run in playoffs ((ALCS or WS) it's a disappointment. Considering the Mets payroll and off-season moves. Are expectations similar for them now. For example, just making the playoffs is not enough? Do they need to make a deep run?
There pitchers aren't getting younger

My expectations for this team- It will largely be based on the health of deGrom. I mark his health line at +/- 170 innings.
If he is good for the plus side- then this team needs to reach the Championship series. And by 2023, WS
Let's assume the NL goes with the DH
We would have
McCann - Good enough to be on a WS type team
Alonso- potential MVP type player
Lindor - potential MVP type player
McNeil/Davis/Escobar/Cano - Biggest question to date but adding Escobar helps. Would love to see a K Bryant added
Nimmo - Certainly a solid player and the type of player you find on championship teams. Needs to stay healthy
Marte- huge signing and potential AS type player
Canha/Smith - ehhhh this is K Bryant would also help

But- this is a lineup that looks like deep playoff capabilities

Starters-
deGrom - CY potential
Max - CY potential
What do we get from the others? But if deGrom and MS go 60 starts...it stops us from losing many series or long losing streaks
Relief - Need to add a couple more but a solid base of 4/5 guys right now

It can be argued that if healthy- the team has the potential to be considered in the top 6 teams or so in MLB. Buck also is a big signing. This is sort of a win now/bridge the gap type team. It has to make the WS in the next 3 years to be considered successful and be in the playoffs all 3 years.
The other, much more important, is to see leadership run this team to be successful for the long term. We need to be considered a top 10 minor league program by the end of those 3 years as well.

Mets sign 2 international prospects with 5 tool potential of 21 players signed by Mets yesterday whereby one player -Simon Juan - is projected to be a 5 tool player who scouts project as a Byron Buxton / George Springer type of player. Willy Fanas is another signee with 5 tool potential. Simon Juan was ranked 16th of the international players.

On another note, why isn’t there a draft in lieu of the financial slotting budgets for International players or commingle them with the regular MLB draft? Don’t fully understand given the importance of these international players to MLB Rosters.

In the current negotiations, the owners are proposing a separate international draft. We'll see if it goes anywhere.

FYI re Edgardo Alfonso.

Note that the Staten Island team is NOT the Yankees affiliate which has been contracted. It is a new Independent team.

I thought Vientos would sneak in there as well.

Fun fact from ESPN+ (paywall). Jacob deGrom's BAA of .128 last year was the lowest EVER, 80 innings minimum. The lowest ever for a qualifying starter was Pedro Martinez' BAA of .166 in 2000.

Such a shame we didn't get to see Jake finish what he started in his magical season. While we cannot expect a repeat performance, we can hope.

The Prospects 1500 rating service has just released its Top 50 (actually 52) Met prospects for 2022. Of the different services, this one is my favorite. It rates a lot more prospects, and it groups them into tiers from Tier 1 (potential multi-year all star) to 5 (unlikely to crack the 40 man). The Mets have two Tier 1 prospects - Alvarez and Baty. They have three Tier 2's - Mauricio, Allan, and Vientos. Of those Top 5, I am willing to see Mauricio OR Vientos traded, but that's it.

Can someone give a 30,00ft high-level overview of the main issues and problems? And potential resolutions.

Any guess about season timing considering "spring training" and ramping up the players?
