Yankees fan here. I think your team made a really good move with an experienced manager/baseball mind. Cohrn was wise to not go with another first time manager. I think Buck will also push back on the analytics trend and blend them with his gut/experience.
Sad to see Buck get mixed up with that loser organization.

I am going to respectfully disagree. If the issues are not life or death why institute a lockout now and stop talking. Could have waited to February 1 to initiate a lockout. I hope I am wrong but I think the small market owners see maintaining as much of the status quo as possible as their last hope to stay competitive. If FA goes to 5 years and arbitration to 2 years of service time, the window narrows for the smaller markets to develop young talent and compete before they have to trade or lose their best players.
It's actually a good thing to have a lockout now. A lockout is just serious enough that it gives the parties the incentive to negotiate seriously. Having it in December gives plenty of time for a deal. Disrupting the season is in nobody's interest.

On Beltran - I didn’t get the managerial hire initially, and I wouldn’t get it now as a bench coach. In short, why? He’s baseball smart? So was Rojas, and we see how that turned out. Make him go tot the minors to prove himself. Davey Johnson did.

And no WS right? Not sure why everyone sees this as some slam dunk hire. Hope we do well of course.

I can tell you we'll be questioning his decisions just like every other manager here and there will be a lot of it.

He is a slam dunk hire and that don't mean he's a sure thing to turning the Mets into champs, but he's exactly what they need at this present time, not another maybe hotshot who has never dealt with anything like the NYC sports environment.

Here is another fella who had his first stint as skipper in NYC, got chased out and then came back to Gotham to become a Hall of Fame manager:

One factor people discount too much when it comes to coaches is that they are capable of evolving and learning more and get better as the years past by, players do as well but once they're bodies give out to age, that's it, they're done.

Managing is all about the brain, temperament and leadership, and some do get better as they get older. Casey Stengel was a disaster in his first two MLB stints, so much so that he had to go manager in the PCL before getting another shot with the Yanks.

There's a lot to what you say in your last paragraph. Stengel managed the Oakland Oaks for three years from 1946 to 1948. The team twice won over one hundred games, and won the 1948 Pacific Coast League championship. In those days, the PCL was quite prestigious. (Remember, there were only sixteen major league teams then, none west of St. Louis). Aging ballplayers would finish their careers in the league, and the Oaks were known as "the nine old men." (Billy Martin was a young player on that team.) So it was clear that Stengel had figured out how to manage. The next winter, the Yankees hired him as manager.

Stengel's years managing the Brooklyn Dodgers and Boston Braves had, it is true, been disastrous. In 1943, while managing the Braves, Stengel was hit by a taxi. He missed three months, and got a staph infection. and after that always walked with a limp. A sportswriter said that the taxi driver was the person who had done the most for Boston baseball. The hospital would receive letters for Stengel addressed to the psychiatric ward.

Stengel had invested in oil and was quite prosperous. He might not have gone back to managing were it not that he lived in southern California and there were three PCL teams there.

Among Stengel's many quotes was this: ""Being with a woman all night never hurt no professional baseball player. It's staying up all night looking for a woman that does him in."

I am old enough that Stengel was still managing the Yankees when I started following baseball.

Edgardo Alfonzo got fired after he WON his league championship as Brooklyn manager.

Anyway to bring Alfonzo back?
Well, since the Mets fired him, he has been out of baseball as far as we know. Which means one of three things, not sure which.

1) He's biding his time for the right opportunity.

2) He doesn't want to get back into baseball, at least not at this time.

3) For whatever reason, no one has any interest in his services.

I doubt that he is turning jobs down.

Let’s be in the market for Rodon and Bryant once lockout is over. Both are probably unrealistic but once can dream especially when it’s Christmas time. 😁

I would think Bryant could easily be in the mix. While he bounced back, it isn’t like he had a monster year either. I think he is just a good fit. Plus, he only costs money, no picks

Does Rodon cost draft picks? If so, I see why Mets are going after Kikiuchi though Rodon is much better. I’m presuming Kikuchi doesn’t cost draft picks ?

I don’t think Rodin was traded during the year so he would cost number 14 pick. At least I don’t think he was
He also has a history of injury.

Just FYI, there are only five free agents (other than Conforto) still out there who have received a QO, and would thus require draft pick forfeiture:

Carlos Correa
Trevor Story
Freddie Freeman
Chris Taylor
Nick Castellanos.

Huge month for the Mets between Max and Buck. Hard to say team isn't improved. The expectations now have to be for a .500 season and getting to 81 wins. That would be a huge win for Mets back office.

Didn’t Chris Taylor re sign with Dodgers? I thought they occurred last day before lockout.

Doesn't make a difference if they locked out now or in February. They're not talking currently and probably won't until late January/early February.

Way too much to lose for both sides. I believe spring training will be cut short, which will hurt the younger players trying to make the teams. It's 2 weeks too long I feel anyway. The season will start on time and barring COVID complications or media hysteria, 162 will be played with all the playoffs also. 🙏⚾

Am I the only one that realizes that the above comment that you all are responding to is meant to be nothing but facetious?
Yeah- do realize it...but have found it interesting how so many fans are usually talking about just Buck and Max. Marte may be their best signing all year

The Mets have one of the oldest starting pitchers, starting CF, and manager. What can possibly go wrong?
