OT: 2019-20 NY Mets Offseason "Hot Stove" Thread

Exactly, Cano , Alonso and Rosario play everyday. Conforto plays everyday. McNeil has to play everyday either in RF or 3rd. McNeil playing 3rd means Davis in LF and Conforto in RF. There is no room for Marte and Nimmo both. It has to be one or the other.

And if Cespedes is throw in, it just adds to log jam.

The Marte deal would be so typically BVW. Buy high, after a guy's best year, as he moves into his early 30s, and is entering his free agent year, meaning that the Mets will have to increase his salary to keep him for more than one year, which means another guy on the team through his mid 30s. And, to accomplish this, he's giving up a player under control for 3 more years and whose one approx. 500 AB season is arguably better than any season by the guy BVW is going after. And BVW will give up more than just this one player to get him.

It's typical of no-idea, no-plan BVW. Just making moves so that he can continue to hold his phone to his ear while standing out on the field looking busy and important. All while the entire system gets weaker. This guy is a disaster. No way he survives Cohen.

I kind of have a feeling Cespedes will be ready opening day. He is the type of guy that would be out till June if he still have 2 years on the contract but will be there on a walk year.
I would love to find a way to have Davis playing everyday but may need to trade him.

It's so much fun trying to fit all these pieces together and finding that they don't. When he made all his moves, did Van Numbnuts even know that hitters have to play positions on the field?

It will be interesting to see if Ces can run well enough to play LF. He may be a DH at this point.

Personally I'm not moving guys to fit Cespedes.

No issues with him starting the season as a pinch hitter.

Cano is a disaster I don’t want to discuss any further
A strange part of me wants to hold out some hope that he gives us 2 years of what we saw when he came back from injury. I could live with that as long as Diaz gets better too.

The biggest problem is the blockage he creates. I would love to just pencil in an infield of Alonso, McNeil, Rosario, Davis

I know guys will get all flustered by this, but Cano is likely going to have a better year then he had last year.

How much better? I don't know, but I'm pretty confident he produces significantly more then 85 he did last season.

I can see Cano being in the .280 range 35 D 15 HR 70 RBI area. If he can produce that and be the worst bat in the lineup- I would take it all day long. And let's say he ends up more in the .260 range, again, most likely, that is the worst bat in our lineup. And we have had many years that a guy like that would be one of the better hitters we had...
I will go back to an earlier post I had and how everyone has the Braves/Nats/Phils ahead of us and I am not all that sure.
We could have a .280 12HR clutch hitting C - 40-50 HR 1B, Cano at 2nd Davis at 3B with a potential .290 25-35 HR, Rosario at SS with 280+ some pop and speed, McNeil at .315+ with 25HR, Nimmo with pop, hustle, power at CF and 35 HR in RF with Conforto.
Defense may kill us but we should be scoring. Familia and Diaz CANT be as bad as they were. Lugo may not be as good but he is always solid and if DB is healthy...not sure why more people aren't more positive. Braves and Nat's both lost big bats and fielding at 3B

Spring training is 6 weeks away,so I hope the Mets players are doing all they can to get ready for the coming season, I know I am.:WooHoo:

Don't take it so serious Amigos, Have a Happy and Healthy New Year, everyone!!!!!

Not in the slightest. The quantitative method used by Fangraphs projects mean reversions for Diaz, Familia, and Betances. It also projects Lugo staying in the bullpen, Wilson staying healthy, and the sixth starter (whomever it turns out to be) getting some bullpen run. Whether all that happens, we shall see.

The thing with baseball more than most sports, is that players are usually who they are for most years with outliners or injury years in between.
So, we should be looking at Familia being his normal low 3.10-3.30 self that still drives us crazy but also not that bad to have, Diaz is not as bad as last year. Lugo should be somewhere in the 3.0 ish range, Wilson is Wilson, Betances- he is an unknown with the injury but he could really be the piece that pulls it all together.
We then also have the starters, our lineup matches up with everyone in the east. Our pain point is our defense.
But we only need our BP not to be a complete disaster again.

Also keep in mind...who in the NL East had a great BP anyway...Wasn't that kind of the big knock on all the top teams?

Assuming everyone is healthy and there are no further trades/signings, the Mets 13 man pitching staff is set:

STARTERS
deGrom
Syndergaard
Stroman
Two of Matz, Porcello, and Wacha

RELIEVERS
Diaz
Familia
Betances
Lugo
Gsellman
Wilson
Brach
Whichever starter doesn't make it.

Starting Lineup is also set (although I'm guessing at the order)
3B - McNeil
2B - Cano
1B - Alonso
RF - Conforto
LF - Davis
CF - Nimmo
C - Ramos
SS - Rosario

Five man bench is the only major question:
Marisnick
Guillorme
Smith? (or will he be traded?)
Lowrie? (or will he be traded - maybe packaged with Smith as a salary dump?)
Nido? (or will we sign an inexpensive FA backup?)
Cespedes? (who the hell knows?)

Your post jumped the shark with its first few words. This never happens.

BVW becoming more and more of used car salesman with his talk at the press conference today. I really can't stand him.

Time to revive this thread! Yesterday was the deadline for teams and players to exchange arbitration numbers. Mets wasted no time reaching agreement with everyone. Here are the numbers:

Stroman - $12.0M
Syndergaard - $9.7M
Conforto - $8.0M
Diaz - $5.1M
Matz - $5.0M
Marisnick - $3.3M
Nimmo -$2.2M
Lugo -$2.0M
Gsellman - $1.2M

I guess you can't blame Lugo for wanting to be a starter!

In other news:

Sam Haggerty, the utility IF-OF who was dropped to make room for Betances, was claimed on waivers by Seattle.

Tim Tebow will be back in Mets camp as a nonroster invitee. I would have thought the experiment would have ended by now, but I guess they're giving it another year.

Former backup C Anthony Recker has joined the SNY analyst team.

Diaz got a big raise = [roll]

Perhaps the system is broken?

This Astros stuff makes the Beltran hire look bad. He was hired because of Astros’s success. Now that was based on cheating, can we really expect Beltran to be a good manager?
Non-issue IMO. If he does well it will all be forgotten. The main thing is that he personally was not sanctioned.
