OT: 2019-20 NY Mets Offseason "Hot Stove" Thread

From what I have read on the finalists I’m leaning towards Bogar

I too am in "whatever" mode but for a different reason. I believe that baseball managers are relatively inconsequential. All the candidates are competent and will adequately execute the direction of ownership and senior management.

Exactly. I am still down because BVW and Jeffy have no clue but the manager charade is just another in the long line of the mess we are. The team is still young and has talent though so hopefully we can win in spite of the poor front office management or BVW finds his way this off-season to actually improve the team.

This mode/model of manager only works when you have a competent GM and owner- Yankees
Does not work when your GM is a fantasy league player - BVW

So- outside of who will be out next manager...Is there any chance Wheeler stays?
I think I may give a look to see if Betances is healthy and maybe give him a shot in the BP.
The guys on the starting lineup who I believe are untouchables(or unmovables) would be Ramos, Alonso, Cano, Rosario, McNeil, Conforto - Would love to say Davis but it just seems that the front office doesn't have him at that level yet. I like Nimmo and how he plays but still not sure what he is. We really do need a true CF at some point though. Why don't we hear more about S Marte as an option?

JD Davis is part of the young movement on this team. He must remain part of this young "core".

NY Post reporting that Tim Bogar is out of the running and did not have a 3rd interview. That leaves Beltran, Perez, Shelton, and Murphy.

Good analysis. My thoughts:

1) Mets have until five days after the close of the WS (which is Monday) to make Wheeler a QO. If as expected they do, then Wheeler has ten days to accept. Most pundits think there is no chance of that happening. I'm not so sure. So yeah, I think there's a chance he'll be back.

Of course is it also possible that the Mets resign him long term. I think this is much less likely. If they do, it's a sign that they won't be retaining either Syndergaard or Stroman. Perhaps both. No team can afford to pay all five starters.

As an aside, this is one more strike against the Mets recent trades. Dunn and Kay would have served very nicely as cheap #4 and #5 starters. Since they are not here, Mets may need to pay for the back of the rotation. That's money that can't be used elsewhere.

2) I like the Betances idea and it would not surprise me.

3) Re Ramos, actually there IS a lot of speculation that the Mets will move him and sign Grandal. If they do move Ramos though, they would have to pick up part of his contract, which is not the Wilpons' style. Either that or trade for somebody else's bad contract.

4) I think either Smith, Davis, or Nimmo will be traded for pitching. In that order of likelihood. Problem is, they won't bring much back. Power hitting corner players are not in much demand - most teams have theirs already! What teams want is pitching, pitching, central defense, and pitching.

5) Marte is definitely an option and has been the subject of some speculation.

Sources: Mets manager interviews are over and they expect to name a manager soon.

JD would absolutely be in my plans but it just seemed he was always odd man out. But the guy will be a long time 285-305 hitter with 25-35 HR.
I think he has a better long term future than both Murphy and Turner. He may not reach their ceiling but he may be very good for 10 years

Nimmo may bring back the most but CF is also a need for us.

JD another victim of the Cano disaster (i.e. McNeil should be playing 2B). Hoping he stays, but unless he suddenly learns how to play 3B, I'm not feeling too confident they keep him.

Main goal for me is getting a CF, and somehow getting the RP mess figured out.

To shift gears, good news on Mets top prospect Andres Gimenez. Led the Arizona Fall League in hitting with .371 and in OPS at .999. The AFL is very good competition; good to see him get back on track after a subpar 2019 season.

So, if he continues to progress, Gimenez may become the Mets everyday 2B as soon as 2021, maybe even late 2020. Ever since he was signed at age 16, the Mets have envisioned a dynamic, athletic middle infield combo of Rosario and Gimenez. That may soon be a reality for years to come.

I see absolutely no obstacles to this plan!
Thanks BVW

Mickey has to be worse but they all live in the same neighborhood.
What do you call a former Mets player that is a raging introvert, never spoke to the media, hated Mets ownership, and failed in one of the biggest Mets moments of all time?

Their new manager!!!
:)

Wow, this is so Mets.

I think this means BVW and will continue to manage the club. I guess prior managerial experience is no longer thought to be a positive attribute.

1) The word is "collaboration". The field manager is a junior member of the management team.

2) Your guess is correct.

Wow, this is so Mets.

What do Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Janice Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix have in common with Yankee championships? All dead at 27.

Let's give the much maligned Wilpons some credit here. We all know that Beltran did not leave the Mets under the best of circumstances. Kudos to them for not holding a grudge.
