Per Jon Heyman, here's how the Mets view their options for filling their starting rotation vacancy, ranked in order:
1) Sign Wheeler long term.
2) Acquire a veteran through trade or free agency.
3) Move Lugo or Gsellman into the rotation.
The absence of an Option 4 - promote someone from the minors - is noteworthy and is somewhat of an organizational indictment. There's just no one ready to fill the role internally. David Peterson may be sometime this year, but not for Opening Day.
Does this mean that the Mets will get rid of everyone who does well, ie Davis, Edgardo Alfonzo, etc?Letting Davis go as hitting coach is a mistake. I also found the Beltran hire more palatable thinking TC was going to be bench coach. This team jut cannot seem to get out of its own way.
If we get the Stroman that pitched in his last handful of games then he is a solid 2/3 starter and can’t even be compared to Kay. Still would love Wheeler and extend Noah but deGrom, Syndegaard, Stroman is a pretty good 1/2/3Well if we didn't trade for Stroman then Kay would be stepping into that 5 role. Also if we do somehow get Wheeler extended then I would trade Stroman to try and recoup some pieces. If we have to sign Wheeler or Syndergaard long term I still choose Noah.
Can he play CF?:cool2:Chili Davis back with Mets, per Jon Heyman.
Near unanimous for the second year in a row. 29 of 30 first place votes. Ryu got the other.
Going to put it out here first. 2020 - 22 wins 2.4 era 3rd in rowNear unanimous for the second year in a row. 29 of 30 first place votes. Ryu got the other.
1) 22 wins is a very big ask nowadays. Hasn't happened in the last four years. Jake Arrieta was the last in 2015.Going to put it out here first. 2020 - 22 wins 2.4 era 3rd in row
The wins are the only ???
But this guy is that good. Will take over Seaver and Gooden as best Met ever. We got a steal.
This is why we sign Noah now...
100 win seasons, team HR record last year, where'd it get you?"The saddest thing in life is wasted talent"
2 great seasons, for nothing.
Cheated out of the WS, just like in 2017.100 win seasons, team HR record last year, where'd it get you?
Where was Jake at Thor’s age? Noah is actually VERY good. Any bad stuff is in his head1) 22 wins is a very big ask nowadays. Hasn't happened in the last four years. Jake Arrieta was the last in 2015.
2) DeGrom is THAT GOOD (and he is), therefore, we must sign Noah now? Sorry, but that doesn't follow.
Shouldve taken the juice like you guys did in the late 90sCheated out of the WS, just like in 2017.
They can't even be that dumb, lol.Joe didn't know!!!!Waiting for the Amigos to put an asterisk on deGrom's B2B
As long as it's not the Bronx.Thank you Wheeler and good luck in Milwaukee or Houston.
Completely agree, stay away!As long as it's not the Bronx.

I love Seaver and he really was a Pitcher with hard nasty stuff but he didn’t strike out more per 9 innings. It’s weird, some of the great K guys back then in my mind- JR Richard, one of them, also would not compare to the strikeout pitchers now...NFW-Seaver pitched more than 7 innings and struck out more.

Don’t disagree on anything you said. The game has changed though, and not for the better. That's because hitters didn't swing for the fences on every pitch like they do now. And when today's pitchers actually pitch 9 innings then I'll consider strikeouts per nine innings which is really a pretty useless stat today. Completely different animal when you're using two games to get nine innings. Seaver hit double figures in complete games for 10 years straight, his best years he had 18 or 19. deGrom has never had more than 1 CG per season. Completely different animal. Seaver averaged 250 innings/season for his entire career. deGrom has never done better than 217.
deGrom is a great pitcher by today's standards. But if Seaver only pitched 7 innings per game and didn't have to pace himself for nine every game god knows what kind of stats "per nine innings" he could've put up.
And as good as Seaver was, I've never seen ANY pitcher have a more dominant year than Gooden in 2005. 24-4 1.53 ERA 276 innings pitched at age 20. But that was as good as he got. I give deGrom the nod over Gooden because he's been much more consistent. But for one season only, I'll take Gooden over both Seaver and deGrom.
Somebody send out the Bat Signal for Zap. I'd love to hear his opinion on this.
Serious question. If you had to win one game which of the three would you take? Seaver, Doc or Jake? Seaver is one of my favorite Mets and I was fortunate to grow up watching him, but for one game I take Jake.
Also agree about Doc for that one game but also because there just was no one even close to his equal when he was pitching his best. Also saw all three. One game on their primes? I would take Doc. During his best run there were times I was surprised hitters even make any contact.
Couldn’t go wrong with any of the three.
A lot of championships anorted up a lot of noses. As a Mets fan, I feel so cheated by both Straw and the Doc!!! Those 80's teams left a lot of Championships in a dark alley.
Would have gone to the playoffs in 84, 85, 87, 89, and 90 as wildcards along with the years they did go. Might have snuck in another championship or 2 if they weren't so busy doing their off field thing. Also wonder if we had today’s playoff format in the mid 80’s if those Mets may not have won another one...
