OT: 2019-20 NY Mets Offseason "Hot Stove" Thread

The impression I got from the nj.com story is that they want Beltran because he is a leader in the clubhouse and will not let the veterans treat the young players badly. It would be better if there were a player who could do that, with someone else being the manager.

As expected, Mets have declined their option on Juan Lagares, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Mets also granted free agency to Joe Panik and Donnie Hart. No surprises there.

Panik did OK as a Met, but still you wonder what might have been had Cabrera accepted the Mets offer. (Remember they offered before the Nats did.) Mets season probably would not have unfolded too much differently, but the Nats season might have.

Thanks goodness the experiment as Juan Lagares as a MLB player has finally ended. Ditto with Asdrubal.

Let's give the much maligned Wilpons some credit here. We all know that Beltran did not leave the Mets under the best of circumstances. Kudos to them for not holding a grudge.
I'm ok with Beltran but Mets need an experienced good bench coach not named Riggelman.

Worm - you have it all wrong. If the Wilpons only held grudges, they'd be more inclined to spend and win at all costs.

The more I read, the more I like the Beltran hire. Put Terry Collins on the bench with him, and I'm ready to take on the 2020 season with our young core!!!!

Maybe. For all we know the Mets may bring him back at a lower salary. There are worse fifth outfielders out there. Remember the roster limit goes up to 26 next year, which may mean there's room for a Lagares-type player.

Coaching update per NYP:
  • 1B Coach Glenn Sherlock is likely gone.
  • 3B Coach Gary DiSarcina is likely to return, although not certain in what capacity.
  • Hitting Coach Chili Davis wants a multiyear contract, which is unusual for coaches. Mets reportedly want him back but we'll see.
  • 82 year old Pitching Coach Phil Regan could actually be back! F*** ageism! Far from a certainty though.
  • The all-important position of Bench Coach could go to none other than Terry Collins. Supposedly Beltran likes him from their half-season together in 2011. One thing we know is that it won't be Riggleman. He was dismissed with Callaway.

2006-2008 and even 2009 if he didnt get injured, may have been some of the best, most consistent offense the Met's have ever had from a player. David Wright may have been the only other guy better and compatible to Straw and Piazza

Nasty ass pitch from a young pitcher with bases loaded in that spot. But more to the point and as even many Met's fans miss, Met's would not have been in that spot without Beltran.
Hey, how did your season end? Asking for a friend...
The same way the new Core 4 has ended the last 3 years. You know, the same Core 4 the 3 Amigos predicted would win multiple championships in the next 5 years.Add to the fact the WC team from what they like to call the NL Least, dismantled the team that has owned them the last 5 years, it kind of cheapens their argument that one great team has kept them from their multiple championships, lol.

Interesting SNY article about the five Beltran traits which BVW said set him apart from the other candidates:
https://www.sny.tv/mets/news/brodie...hose-carlos-beltran-as-next-manager/311390094

Also noteworthy: BVW said that the Mets are making Wheeler a qualifying offer (as expected) and if he doesn't accept, will continue to negotiate with him on a long term deal. Not sure I believe the second part. Wheeler has ten days to accept the QO.

Cespedes unknown for 2020 - counting the days until off the books. #AnotherDisaster
IF he comes back healthy and gives us 290 35 100 - then he is far from disaster. But, creates a logjam in the OF Conforto/Nimmo/McNeil/Davis/Cesp . all because of Cano...

http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/stats/_/id/32080/yoenis-cespedes - 119 games in 4 years (the last contract) would be a disaster to me. 2015 and 2016 don't count.
I’m as pissed off ascanyone about the past couple of years. But, if he could come back with an all star type year in 2020- then it isvehat it is and I give him our great run at the start and what could be a great run at the end. If he isn’t backbgor 140+ games- the F him lol

Make the absolutely correct decision to give Wheeler the QO so that's good.

Ces isn't playing and we can't go into the new season with a plan expecting him to be in the lineup. Front office just needs to pretend he's not on the roster.

I don’t expect him either but IF...

And quite honestly...don’t know how he couldn’t be playing. If he is injured that much/ Mets fault for not having a condition on his contract and his fault for BS

They're receiving insurance money for it while also counting his money against the payroll so it's actually a huge win for the Wilpons.

I hate seeing Jeff. He's such a weasel and has one of the most punchable faces.

Not an Ellsbury like disaster but I digress

Wilpon’d

Only would have $ for 1 big time player. I’ll still take the pitcher, but do love Rendon.

They said McNeil will play third so Rendon is out I guess. The cheap Mets will probably sign Blevins and call it a day.

If they plant McNeil there and have him play 150 games, then I would gladly spend the money elsewhere as much as I love Rendon.
Hell, I’d drop that cash on Cole before an offensive player..,

SNY article about the Mets reassignment for Edgardo Alfonzo from the Brooklyn manager job. Basically BVW is unhappy with his player development skills. I acknowledge that that cannot be dismissed out of hand just because Brooklyn won the title. In the minors, especially the low minors, player development trumps winning and they do not necessarily go hand in hand.

That said, I question whether BVW has any ability to evaluate anyone's player development skills.

exactly. He probably just wants someone who is more of a "yes" man. I think he succeeded.

Mets made an interesting under-the-radar transaction earlier this week. They picked up Stephen Gonsalves, a 25 year old LHP, on waivers from Minnesota. Two years ago Gonsalves was Minnesota's #3 prospect and the #64 prospect in all of MLB. Then he had injury issues and his stock has dropped. This is the time of year when teams are clearing room on their 40 man, and Gonsalves was a casualty of that process. The Mets took a flyer on him, and we'll see. He has been slotted as the Mets #23 prospect on MLB.com.

Mets also added 24 year old LHP Blake Taylor to their 40 man. He had been in their system for awhile, and the time had come (not exactly sure what the rules are) where they had to protect him or risk losing him.

Mets 40 man roster currently stands at 37.

Some thoughts as we wait to see if Alonso's ROY is unanimous:

1) The GM meetings have begun. They run through Thursday. While the GM meetings are not as productive as the December winter meetings, maybe something will happen. So far throughout MLB, the Hot Stove has been barely a lukewarm simmer.

2) That said, don't look for the Mets to make any blockbuster moves, either in trades or free agency. Of course, given last year's "blockbuster", that may be a good thing.

3) The only possible exception to the above IMO is if they decide to go big to get a CF. If they want a CF they have to trade for one. There just aren't any on the free agent market. In fact, one could make a case that the most desirable free agent CF is Juan Lagares! There's a reason for this. CF is a young man's position. By the time a top-flight CF is around long enough to qualify for free agency, he is often moved to a corner.

4) Coaching updates:
  • Contrary to earlier reports, Terry Collins is now reportedly not a candidate for the bench job.
  • Jeremy Hefner, a serviceable Met starting pitcher from a few years back, is in the running as pitching coach.
  • Chili Davis is unlikely to return. He wants a multi-year contract, and those generally aren't given to hitting coaches.
