Only reason I can see an opt out after 2 years is that he truly hates NY or his wife does. Or if he breaks down and does the noble thing and retires etc. Regardless let’s enjoy the next 2 - hopefully 3 years

I saw that one factor in the Mets favor is that his off-season home in Jupiter FL is only 30 minutes away from the Mets training complex. That's an extra six weeks he can stay at home.

As psychotic as this deal is, 2 years is the best deal possible for a HOF pitcher. Let’s hope he doesn’t break his back sitting on the toilet in the next 6 months.

Great news indeed!!!!! Now let’s get 2/3 out of Baez, Bryant, Stroman

I’ll bet you that the next CBA is going to have some type of a Steven Cohen Rule.
Also known as a salary cap. My guess is that its proponents have enough votes to pass it right now. There are a lot more small markets than big markets.

Thing is though, MLBPA will sit out the season before agreeing to a salary cap. That is the hill they will die on.

Wouldn't be surprised if the owners added a salary floor to try to make it more palatable.

Baseball owners and players are pretty stupid, but they must realize that a strike would be catastrophic. Having a salary cap is the equivalent of "stop me before I take another drink." I think it's more likely to see greater revenue-sharing forced on the rich teams.

$43 million per season !
Sounds like the team whose fans were always whining about some other team "buying a championship"... or at least trying to do so.... are OK with it when it's their team spending like a drunken sailor.
Why am I not surprised ?

When?

Maybe I'm a pessimist, but I wonder whether it's a good idea to pay a lot of money for older players like Marte and Scherzer despite their excellent track records. Doing this makes sense to me only for a team that is just a player or two away from winning next year -- can we really say that about the Mets? It seems to me they have lots of issues, not just one or two. I've said this before, but I think people overemphasize super stars in baseball. A hitter can't come up more than one time in nine, and a starting pitcher can't pitch more than once in five days. I'd rather have three medium players for each superstar.

Someone on TV....I think it was Bruce Beck... just noted that the Baltimore Orioles entire payroll is $39 million.

What are you talking about? Lots of issues? The Braves just won the WS thanks to a group of trade deadline acquisitions and before that were treading water just trying to reach .500

The Braves caught lightning in a bottle. Many teams engage in trade deadline acquisitions and don't do nearly as well. No one could have known that Soler, Rosario, Pederson and Duvall would prove to be so outstanding. The Mets had better not rely on that strategy. https://www.mlb.com/news/braves-2021-trade-deadline-moves-world-series-title

It’s pretty clear that the Mets strategy is this: try to win now using the owner’s money while not hurting their efforts to try to replenish the farm system. So they want to sign players who don’t cost them draft picks while spending big bucks in the relatively short term to see, as law prof says, whether they can catch lightning in a bottle. If not, keep trying to build the system.

Cohen is on full tilt! Crazy signing for an over-the-hill pitcher. LOL.

The Mets also have an image to repair and a fan base to excite. Marte and Mad Max aren’t holding anyone back and it seems, it is just money at this point. It doesn’t look like it is going to stop them from adding those additional pieces.
with the 3 guys signed last week- Starting CF, most likely a starting Inf and a 4th OF…it really only left SP and middle relief as the holes. Mad Max helps SP more than 3 middle guys would, so now get 1 more starter and a couple of middle relief.

I think Scherzer is a beast! But 38 year old beast Cry Young award winner Ray is 30, he just signed for 5/115. Better deal maybe

On the Michael Kay Show today, Michael mentioned he spoke to an MLB exec last year during the period Cohen was buying the Mets, and it went like this: Michael said Cohen would buy his way to a championship sometime in the future. The MLB exec said Cohen understands how he is expected to act once he takes ownership of the Mets. Michael warned the MLB exec they would regret it. Cohen will bully his way to a championship if he feels things aren't going his way. Consider how the Mets collapsed in August and how it appeared the league went out of its way to stonewall his attempt to hire front office personnel only made the situation worst.

The Mets are on their way to a $300 payroll, and it's going to upset the applecart. Small market teams are pissed, and even some big market teams are seeing red. Michael basically said the league screwed Cohen, and Cohen will screw the league harder and longer. You better believe the new league deal, when it gets done, will contain "Cohen Rules" to stop him in the future. Unless the league gets a salary cap, any actions by the league will be minor.

Kind of cry baby stuff…Yankees payroll was crazy years back, Dodgers payroll was crazy the past couple of years. Now the Met’s make a push and it’s a problem…

Has Ray ever had 2 good years in a row, much less five? Asking for a friend…
I actually like Ray a lot. But, for the next couple of years, I think Max will still be pitching at HOF levels.

Yankee fans on here crying is as predictable as it is hilarious!!! Why are they upset, they have the manager and GM their entire fanbase "loves" and no need for pitching, LMFAO!!!!T2Kpus and Kbang are living in this thread as The Dead Zone falls to page 15, with little to no baseball talk. T
oo funny. I forking love it. Cry me a river as the Varsity takes a back seat in the back pages and the city. PS. The liar continues to lie. First he said I said I don't read The Dead Zone, I always do, now I'm not a Rutgers fan, yea, hello. I put 2 children through the university moron and love what it's been able to help them attain. I had 4 season tickets for 8 years, can you say the same? Caught up with my oldest son on the 50 yd line with my youngest son and wife after the 2006 Louisville game, the single best college moment I've ever had, yea, no Rutgers fan here a-hole. Try again. See, my boys never had to ride The Shortbus, loser. Waiting on post#11 lololololol LGM & FJB Bringing up Yankee fans was just my way of getting out in front of the obvious, T2Kpus and Kbang crying about the money. Only thing left to do is get 5 or 6 players using steroids and Cohen can follow Big George's road map. If YOU weren't trolling, how would you know what I post? LFGM

It wasn’t a problem when Stanton and Cole made more money than teams. Shouldn’t be a problem now.

Kermit Cole will be the same age as Scherzer when his deal is over. We already know Scherzer can pitch well in his late 30s.

The trolling is so boring.

Buh-bye back page Yankees.
They’ve had no pulse this entire off-season. The one guy they were supposed to be on just signed with Texas. At this point, they seem satisfied with just trying to find a way to resign Judge.

I’m hoping the Mets sign one more SP and another infield bat, before the lockout.
