OT: New York Mets 2021-2022 Off Season Thread

It wasn’t a problem when Stanton and Cole made more money than teams. Shouldn’t be a problem now.
It's always been a problem for a big chunk of the Mets fan base....except when the Amazins do it.
Me...I don't care how much they spend. I've always said I want my teams to do all they can to improve their talent level.
I'm just pointing out some hypocrisy here.

That's great, but a lot more moves have to be made, either now or then.
I don't know if I would say a lot. Lol. A few maybe. Like one more starter, a reliever and one more bat. The rest will be subtracting guys whose services will no longer be needed. BTW aren't you a Phillies fan or am I mistaken?

I agree. Marcus would have slotted in perfectly after Jacob and Max but I think his outspokeness on social media will preclude the team from trying to bring him back.
I doubt that Cohen cares about Stroman's tweets. More like whether he is willing to pay ace money for a #3 starter.

I think they'll be looking for a back of the rotation guy. Even Cohen has his limits. (Maybe?)

IF the Mets did not sign another starter, here's the rotation:

deGrom
Scherzer
Walker
Carrasco
Peterson/Megill

And not much behind that. The key to the season is how well Walker and Carrasco perform.

$43 million per season !
Sounds like the team whose fans were always whining about some other team "buying a championship"... or at least trying to do so.... are OK with it when it's their team spending like a drunken sailor.
Why am I not surprised ?
our biggest gripe has always been that our owner was usually not willing to spend like they needed to to compete with the Yankees. Now ours does. Most of us never complained about Steinbrenner spending the money, just wished he owned the Mets instead.

Yet you never miss a chance whenever the Mets spend. Do you see hypocrisy when you tune to CNN? Listening to Moose last night, he said Twitter is going nuts with pissed off Yankees fans, lol. Could it be they ALL read this thread and weren't happy that Mets fans got out in front of Yankees whining instead of solely enjoying our moment? It's half the fun in the off season, you'd have to ride the shortbus not to take advantage.

Going forward, the yankees will never be able to outbid the mets for a free agent player both teams truly want, as long as the ownership stays the same for both teams. It has to make yankee fans salty, as they have basically had the resources to do what they wanted. The yankees bought players for years prior to the luxury tax and basically had no competition. Turns it out the tradition of wearing the pinstripes was just a talking point and the players just took the money. Unfortunately the yanks are no longer the alpha and it hasn’t sunk in yet.

Can’t rely on Carrasco and Walker as we saw last year. Need a lot of SP depth. Read Mets are interested in Kikiuchi. I’d prefer Rodon.

Agree with ruforjersey...We still have to make moves but we are not in a dire need for a lot more moves. Would love to move either Dom, McNeil or JD for a good number 3 type SP. Maybe take on a larger salary if that is what is needed instead of giving up a prospect. And getting middle relief is such a crap shoot anyway- we can do that after the lockout. But the real key at this moment is a number 3 starter. If we pull that off- I am ok with this as my team on day one and then make some trade deadline moves.
We have to step back a little at times and not forget, McNeil is actually a very good hitter and a very versatile fielder. Can play all over the field. JD can rake and if there is a DH- I think he would excel if he doesn't have fielding in his head.

SP- I hope that Walker can at least get off to that strong start again. Maybe can last through the year strong now that he had the innings last year. And hope Carasco comes back to his pre 2021 self. As he had always been a #2 or 3 type guy.

Question for those that follow the farm- how close are Baty and Alvarez to making the club and even if ready, are they in one of those weird years that we stash them to save service time(which I detest) - Seems to me that the C Alvarez is damn near ready and wouldn't mind seeing him getting some burn up here.

Alvarez is at least a year away, more likely two. He just turned 20 this month. The highest level he's played at is High A.

While it's possible we could see Baty before season end, early-mid 2023 is more likely.

The most likely of the homegrown prospects to make an impact this year is Vientos.

I disagree. The key in my opinion is for the first two pitchers not to miss starts due to injury/illness.

First 2 guys need 60 starts between them. Simple as that. Now- if the Met's do get those 60 starts and both healthy for playoffs- it would be very dangerous. You can argue they have the top 2 guys you would pick in baseball to pitch a single game. Middle relief does become very important though as they will not have either guy average more then 7 innings at most and most games they will be out after 6 if we have a lead.

See ya, didn't need his 200plus K's. Would have been a perfect fit for a team with RH power and 200 + K's all through the lineup. 😉
I wanted him even with his 200k's and middle fingers. Team needs a little fire at times but that is most likely why he and Stro aint here.

If they weren’t going to resign him, what was the point in trading for him and give up prospects?

I was fine with the Baez trade but not when they did absolutely nothing else. The Braves gave them a little transaction lesson and won themselves a ring, while we swiftly packed it in.

Damn. You have a good memory.
1986 was soooo long ago.
You may remember that a few weeks ago I posted a link to the Youtube video of Vin Scully calling Mookie Wilson's at bat. I well recall almost hyperventilating during the rally, and screaming as the ball went through Buckner's legs. The odd thing is that I am not a Red Sox hater; I rooted for them in each of their World Series appearances starting in 2004, and I remember rooting for them in 1967. And I was a Buckner fan when I lived in Chicago and he was with the Cubs. But in 1986 I wanted the Mets to win.

Yes, it was a long time ago. There aren't many teams with a longer dry spell for winning the World Series.

I think they did plan on resigning him, it's what happened once he got here. He's a bad influence on Lindor, think Billy Martin on Mickey Mantle

You’re right. About 10 years before the Yankees started juicing.
Remember that the Yankees won three straight pennants beginning in 1976, and won the World Series twice over the Dodgers. And I'm not sure that the Mets can claim to have been any cleaner in the 1990s than the Yankees. Steroids were everywhere.

Any Mets on that list who got caught?

Any Yankees?

Long story, short. Mets we’re more worried about hiring GM…

GM went after depth and pitching over the weekend…

Baez felt he needed to go elsewhere and Mets settled for McNeil (and Cano) at second.

Meh… Let’s see if they go after Stroman and/or Bryant, and who knows who else.

BTW, while the new GM was signing all of the new players, Sandy “ran point” for the Baez negotiations. Draw your own conclusions.
