OT: NJ playing catch up in the Craft Beer business

For something a little different try Burnt Mills in Bedminster. Like a good cider now and then and they have a great space on 206.
We live up the road from there. That place gets packed big time on nice weekends. The parking lot gets filled and people park their cars on 206 . They get food trucks and have fund raisers there also.

Going to be amazing when the leaves start changing. Take some chairs just in case, some food and the dog.
Leaves starting to change just a little now. The place could not be easier to find . Sunny mid 60's is the forcast for this weekend.

Im pumped. Off all next week for fall trout and a visit to the Walpack Inn on Sunday.
Hi!! Just googled Walpack Inn and it looks really cool there. Homemade bread? Wildlife views? Those are my two favorite things in 1 place. Haha

I thought Source was pretty solid. Flounder in Hillsborough is going in the same direction and building a barn as their tasting room.
My critiques of Source are my own as everyone has different likes/dislikes. I find they generally have fewer beers available and the ones they do have are very slanted toward IPA's and tbh I find malt is way more drinkable than hops. Give me a dunkel, lager or ale any day of the week over an IPA. And I do think the place is a slam dunk from a structure standpoint but its like a damn nursery every time I go with kids and strollers everywhere.

I like the woods minus the spiders. Haha The harvest dinner sounds delish. Why am I just hearing about this place ??!!

It's all vegetarian? Or is this just the harvest dinners? Why am I just hearing about this place ??!!
It opened up , maybe at the beginning of the summer. Veggy ? Dinners ? It's a hard apple cider brewery.

Yep,menu on Facebook (changes weekly) and they have Harvest Dinners on the lawn.
Interesting. I offered to take my wife there and be the sober driver. She likes hard cider. She also gets some from a farm in Califon named Melicks that makes their own also. They have it in liquor stores also . But the dinner thing looks interesting. They have also had food trucks there this summer. A Maine lobster truck has been there a few times.

I think our exchanges got mixed up. I was referring to Walpack Inn and I think you're speaking of Burnt Mills in Bedminster? Which sounds really nice as well. No food only food trucks as you said.

Yes. I thought I was only the only one on earth with such preferences! Too many damn IPA s is my biggest complaint with craft beer.

Even in a huge liquor store in Colorado they looked at me like an alien when I asked if they had any Helles, craft or import.

@RUDiddy777
Can you let me know how it is please? Are you going to hike? I see there are options nearby and a pretty waterfall. The photos are spectacular.

Showing my age but IPAs are so '90s to me. Granted, I'm referring to traditional IPAs not the current NEIPA, hazy IPA craze. I got past my own 5-year long "IPA phase" in the mid-to-late 90s. 'Twas over before Y2K, lol.

Perhaps if I was in my 20s now like I was back then I might be on the IPA bandwagon awhile longer with the proliferation of breweries and so many of them bringing innovation to the style. Though I still believe there is such a thing as hops overload...not to my taste any longer.

My family and I have been up there in that neck of the woods a few times . We always get there by taking RT. 80 into the Water Gap past Worthington St. Forest where we have camped in the past. The Inn is a few miles from Worthington . Very nice area . A lot of hiking options including the App. trail. And yes some small Waterfalls.

NJ, with few exceptions, was a late starter to the Craft Beer wave. However, that has changed and even more on the way.

That's a lot of breweries. I'm curious to see how they do, as I haven't heard that many of the new ones, like Jersey Cyclone, Sunken Silo, Highrail, Village, Ashton, are knocking it out of the park and making great beer. Of the newer breweries, Source has a good rep and ratings mostly for their IPAs. Village doesn't seem to focus on their beer and instead focuses more on the food, other drinks and atmosphere, kind of like Harvest Moon. Sunken Silo seems to have decent crowds from I've seen.

Anyone have some tasting reviews from these or other newer breweries?
I know at least one fairly successful brewery nearby that will not reopen after Covid. Six months with no taproom business due to Covid has really hurt them.
yikes, care to share a name?
If you're going to Jersey Girl, you should also go to Czig Meister nearby in Hackettstown. The guy who started that brewery was the head brewer at Kane when they first opened, and I found their beers to be much better. Also, if you do go to Czig Meister, there's a really good wings place about a block away called Marley's, you can bring their wings to the brewery.
I like Kane much more than Czig.
In Monmouth and Ocean counties I believe Belford Brewery has the best beer. Icarus knows what they are doing too. Source in Colts Neck has the best physical structure but is way down the list for beer. Heading out to check Screaming Hill brewery in Cream Ridge soon.
Kane is in Ocean and blows everyone away. No one else in the state is close to Kane for consistency and great dark and BA beers.

Having 20 breweries within 2 miles of my house, I can attest to the economic impact they have made to both Asheville and my checking account. Glad too see I have more options to visit next time in NJ.

I haven't been to Belford in a few years but I didn't find them to be anything special. Have they really improved so much that you'd put them on the same level as Kane and Carton? I think most people would consider them both to be in the top 3 in the state.

Sorry, I worded that confusingly. I meant that I found Czig Meister's beers to be much better than Jersey Girl's.

So Asheville vs. (Your most familiar town) Colorado: who wins?

I went to Kane last weekend and unfortunately there was a 10x10 canopy in their parking lot and there were two people selling takeout only. Ill try back again when there is seating inside or out.

I have yet to try Kane. I do like Carton for the atmosphere and the format they use to purchase a paddle plus one pint. I thought their beers were ok.

Cape May is just as consistent. They don't play much in the dark beer arena but they are as solid as they get. I wish Kane would come to Philly.

I left Denver 15 years ago and moved to Asheville so it is really hard for me to compare. But I will say when breweries were just starting to really get going in Asheville, the beer culture became part of the fabric of the city compared to Denver. But, there are a lot of reasons to explain that as well.

Ahhh.

I moved out of CO around a decade ago. State was pretty established for micros but not so much in or around Steamboat. Family just moved out to Front Range and have been finding best local spots for when I get out to visit ...looking forward to it.

Asheville is a great spot for sure.

Used to spend a lot of time in Steamboat as I had friends from HS there. One got his brewing start in Steamboat. For some reason I think it was called Steamboat Brewing. This was probably around 2000 or so. Certainly some great breweries on the front range now.

Not picking on you specifically because it been used a lot in this in this and other threads. The phrase microbrewery has been retired so to speak. Breweries for the most use Craft Beer and Craft Breweries as their unification against the Inbevs of the world. They market themselves that way now. Even the big boys use the Craft term. The group's are defined Domestic, Craft, Imports, flavored malt beverages and the new category this year Seltzers, which are a flavored malt beverages but became so big in the market place they are now a separate category.

True, you don't hear micro much anymore. In my own defense, I was talking about 10 years ago (but mostly just didn't want to go back and rewrite because I have a bum hand : )

Ha. I'll give the injury clause card. Microbrewies in the beginning were initially single restaurants that brewed only for consumption on premise. As laws changed in many states the Craft Brew revolution took over. In PA there weren't any Tap Rooms not that long ago. To sell beer at the brewery you had to have a full restaurant license. They actually didn't change the law by a vote but the the PLCB revised there definition of breweries serving in house. It's been a very interesting 10 years in PA without voting in New laws. Simply it's big $$ for the state.

I found Carton to be incredibly average to underwhelming. I heard so much about them and was excited to finally get it the store. One and done.
Me and my buddy who always loved Carton were talking about them the other day, they actually started off strong but have regressed the past few years, personally I like coffee porter and stouts but I can't sand their coffee beers, just not thick enough for me.

But once you bet past Boat and 077XX, they ain't got much going on for them.

Agree. I lived in Atlantic Highlands when Carton and Kane first opened.

Augie Carton was the better marketing guy but Michael Kane the far better brewer. And the Czig Meister, now in Hackettstown, was a top brewer for Kane in the early days. Met him a few times at Boyle’s Tavern in Monmouth Beach, a great little craft beer bar before he opened his place.
