OT: Who else is still working?

Same, we are busy as heck, especially paint, but in general people are planning all sorts of home projects for the upcoming weeks.
I just called my local paint store. Plan to paint the bathrooms since I have the time.

Fed should make the 401k’s liquid without taxes or penalty.

No way.
My wife and I are mid 30's.
Liquidating now would be a disaster considering the losses this quarter.
We aren't planning on using this money for decades - no reason to liquidate now.

I guess if you are older it could make sense if were planning on utilizing the money sooner.

So who is still working with all that is going on? I am a IBEW Union electrician and have not missed any time yet. I am working tomorrow in New Brunswick and Monday in Somerset. Even if Murphy shuts down non essential business this weekend I guess they are deeming my job essential. I know I am lucky to work but nothing I am doing is essential. Its a construction job site at a data center. My boss is already trying to get some kind of badge made for our vehicles saying we are essential. I just dont get it. Seems like money over safety to me. My wife also works for the state taxation dept and she still has to go in as well.

I am a Podiatrist, working two mornings a week for emergencies. Anyone has foot issues, I am at the Podiatry Center, Millburn, NJ-9737629294

Part time with SUNY, still there, very small reduction in hoursl

Mary Anne, Dental Hygienist works 2-3 days a week, off till April
Full time babysitting now since Matt/Amanda are NYPD.

Senior Designer for an advertising agency, WFH indefinitely. My wife is in sales for a large new home builder, also WFH indefinitely. Both of us still working 40 hrs. week from home while also home schooling our 2 kids ages 8 and 11. Lots of quality family time this week while hunkering down, definite silver lining there.

I am concerned about both of our jobs though... my wife's because who is coming out to plan a new home right now and mine because the clientele of the ad agency I work for is 90% casinos, a lot of which (if not all) are shut down right now. Yikes.

Hopefully your jobs are safe. In case you didn't know, the online gaming industry in NJ, Nevada and PA is booming during the last 2 weeks. I play poker online and the 3 major poker networks in NJ are crushing their guarantees. I'm sure they could use some of your services as I get about 10 marketing emails a day telling me that they are still running.

We had painting scheduled for this week anyway and a couple of days ago I went to Home Depot to pick up supplies. They are doing the 50 person per store thing and I asked they guy at the counter how it was going. He said that he felt like for the past 2 days 49 of the 50 people in the store were there for painting.

I always thought being a Podiatrist would be one of the better choices to have a normal life and still be a Doctor. Maybe I am assuming too much, but I would guess you don’t have to put up with very many emergency phone calls on Christmas, Thanksgiving, weekends, 3 AM , etc. regarding foot issues. If I was smart enough to get through Med School, I think I would have been glad to help people, but would have insisted they only have health issues Monday-Friday 9-5 and never on holidays.

My company is on full staff and pretty much working longer and harder. IT MSP/MSSP, Business Continuity, etc
Remote work and planning for this situation is what we have been talking about, selling and implementing on a daily basis. And hard to believe how many companies just never think it will happen to them or how easy it is just to tell their staffs to work from a Starbucks for a couple of days.

My own situation is tougher. I am in Sales, good thing our teams draw a good base. But this has killed and postponed numerous deals in the pipeline and almost impossible to get anyone on the phone right now for a net new deal. Losing commission for at least 6 months will be devastating to most of our team. But, as I said, good base and benefits still there.
Wife had left her job during our house sale and move into a new home and had just started her new job search early Feb. Usually takes her a week or so to get a new position. She was in the middle of a couple of negotiations when this really hit and now no chance of landing a job for a while.
All I can say is thank God we sold our house in time. No way my base alone could have continued to support that mortgage/tax/upkeep bill.

My client owes me mid five figures, but they do all the time. If I never get a wire from them, it won't kill me, but I would rather squander my own money.

I will liquidate some pieces on Monday before Zombieland starts for real.

Good thing the hard liquor cabinets are stocked.

Aren’t they closed now? I have a lot of used paint I need to get rid of (selling the house) and have no idea how to get rid of it. For the 10 years we lived in this house my wife thought it a good idea to save every can in case we had to touch up. So if you need I have plenty

FYI - The county recycling center says if the paint is water based, open it and let it dry out then throw it into regular trash. Oil based is disposed of with other hazardous waste. I recently had a painting job and opened an old can to find the paint separated and had black mold spots. I opened all my old cans to let them dry out in the basement but it does take a long time to dry if there's still a good amount in there.

let's talk sometime...maybe best after some of this shit clears up. @RutgersRaRa has my contact info

Roger that. At the moment I'm running a design / deploy for an insurance provider out in Chicago - virtually, of course. We're moving their Tier 1 apps to a fully HA solution on VxRail over NSX.

I am a semi retired lawyer working from home doing telecom work for new cars (connected cars). My client's are foreign manufacturers so most of the day to day was remote any event. All the client's operations in the US are now working from home.

I go to a cabinet maker friend and get wood shavings. I put a contractor bag in a garbage can, pour in enough chips to fill a quarter of the bag, and then I start pouring the paint in. Every few cans I add more chips. I can pour 4-6 cans (not full usually) and have half a bag filled. Then I let the cans dry.

On trash pick-up days they always take everything. Leave the lids off the cans so they can see they are empty. They worry about paint in the cans because they can pop when compacted, and leave paint going down the street.

Keep your eye on the oil paint because it generates heat as it dries. Usually I have so much paint in the bag its long gone before drying.

Leave them open outside if there's mold in there.

My wife took a part time job 6 weeks ago to work in a local Doctor's Office doing front end work. She start's tomorrow.
Really torn over this.

Still employed for now. Taking this one day at a time. Scheduled WFH for 2 days a week, in the office 3. We'll see how long this arrangement lasts, as things pivot on a dime around here these days.

My uncle was still commuting into Manhattan from Rockaway Beach up until Wednesday - some sort of project manager for construction sites.

No longer going in because he tested positive for COVID-19.
Luckily not severe and already recovering with no fever anymore.

Not his fault but why quarantine should have happened a long time ago. Great to hear he is doing well and continues to get better...

My wife is working from home, I am still traveling to work as essential employees we will remain open at our facility.

Well, that makes sense, what with you working at home and the wife still going to the job.

Work needs me. Work needs her.

In light of the latest murphy declarations I might not be going in Fridays anymore.

Funny thing is in a 4 story building 8 cars were in the parking lot Friday. Not much risk there.

Great idea. No wood shavings but I do have lots of small driftwood pieces I can use, maybe toss in some grass clippings or leaves. Most of them are all dried up I’m finding

Be careful of dried leaves and any oil paint. Its the drying of the oil in oil paint that causes fires in rags sometimes. Lots of people think its the thinner but its the oil

Working from home. Boss, who works continuously under normal times, thinks he now has a captured work force since we are all at home and can't do anything. Had several phone conferences yesterday and about to hop on a 5:30 call now.

Just got the call. The entire IT staff is now working from home. Was supposed to be 2 or 3 days a week in office and others days WFH. Murphy's conference call changed that for us. And the bar I work in part time has been closed for a week.

For us, a skeleton crew for IT and R&D will be in the office. Need to keep IT working so we can all work from home and we have many R&D studies underway that need to continue.
