OT-Will it Snow on Friday?

These threads alway remind me of Benny Hill he looks out the window and says we have 8 inches in the driveway...the lady that plays the hag wife says, well that beats 4 inches in the bed....its something like that..i am sure some one will dig up the clip.

On a small piece of plywood I put out in the middle of my backyard last night.

ok but my totals at 240 were line with the trained spotter from Belle Mead who reported 2 inches at 2:42 and then we got that heavy burst than dropped almost an inch in an hour.

You must be in a sweet spot

5 pm here in Howell measured in a few places now 6" to 6.5". My Pyrenees dogs are now completely encrusted in snow, they finally decided it was time to come in. They are now melting in the garage. It's still coming down pretty good here.

As of 4:00 pm, we're at 4.75", so 1/2" the last 30 minutes. Since about 4 pm, the intensity has come down a fair amount, as we're now snowing between lightly and moderately. Assuming we have a few more hours of this, we'll easily make 5", but 6" might be out of reach, unless there is some backbuilding and we get back into the 20+DBZ bands. Right now those bands have collapsed to just east of the TPK, which is east of me. Not sure they'll come back.

As of 5 pm, we hit 5.0", as that last band did backbuild to the west just enough to get us that last 1/4". Looking at the radar, I doubt we get more than another 1/4" unless some stray short bands/squalls hit us, which is unlikely. Areas in eastern half of Monmouth and Ocean and from NYC eastward can still get another inch or so, but I think it'll be over everywhere by 7 pm.

Given that I'm seeing lots of 5-6" amounts in Middlesex County on AmericanWx, I'd say the NWS did well to go with the warning for 6" of snow. Just came in from a walk and my 2nd "shovel" with a push broom - nice easy stuff to push around.

Still coming down here in the OC almost 12 hours of snow. Have no idea how much since its so windy. Some areas in my yard have 12 some have 0. Enjoying the fire and some flying fish, time to head out to the garage for a bowl

PS flying fish exit 16 wild rice are not only tasty but strong

Still no plows, I think we have 1 here in town

Newark has 4 inches, NYC 4.5, Marlboro is a biggie in NJ with 8 inches.

3.25 in Belle Mead and thats probably it

Yeah, something blew up right around this part of western Monmouth. We don't have 8", but we might just barely eek out 7" by the time it shuts down in 45 minutes or so.

I'm in Belle Mead (Montgomery Township) and we have just shy of 4".

How did bac have only 3" in Belle Mead when you had 4"? To quote him from earlier in the thread about my total from Friday morning, "something is fishy." Here's a pic of his reaction when he saw the NWS upgrades to the storm this morning. Our curmudgeonly, but cuddly Heat Miser.

Well, we did get that last 1/4" over the last hour and it's snowing really lightly now and just about done I'd say. I'm calling it over at 5.25". Have seen reports of 6" or so in Edison and Woodbridge, so I'm certainly not in any jackpot this time, lol. Great storm - huge overperformer relative to what looked to be coming a few days ago and even yesterday.

Belle Mead covers a decent area. I've seen it dumping 2 blocks away and light at my house; so very localized heavier amounts happen. Also, measuring is not an exact science so there is variability in both our measurements - meaning the difference might not have been 1"

I'm guessing you're new here with 4 posts. Just some ball busting. Long history...read the part about measurements from the Friday morning storm earlier in the thread...

It stopped here in Howell roughly 7". My season ticket group last night at the wrestling match was contemplating the impending doom of snow coming. I assured everyone not to worry this was a 50/50 proposition and the outcome of snow was quite unlikely. Well 7" later I'm well on my way to becoming a meteorologist. Let's just say I received quite a few calls today to bust my chops.

The wedding indeed happened. We did it on Friday morning at 11. The guests had no trouble traveling from North Jersey.

I really don't understand why we scheduled the wedding for a weekday, but it worked out well!
It's cheaper

Where were you getting your info from? By Thursday evening it had become pretty clear that we were likely to at least get a couple of inches along the I-95 corridor and that more was likely towards the shore (i.e., Howell) and by Friday afternoon it seemed pretty clear the Howell area would be getting at least 3-4" - posts by me and others on this board to that effect and the NWS and the media saying the same.

Not here RUnumbers, obviously my 1st mistake. The morning of the match the Weather Channel had it at 50%. So I went on that info.

Gotcha - that actually makes sense, as TWC tends to hug the GFS model and that model was always showing little to no snow for the I-95 corridor (and maybe an inch or two towards the Shore) through Friday evening and that's what TWC was predicting, even late Friday night, despite the GFS then being the only model not showing 3-5" for the I-95 corridor.

Hugging the GFS worked out great for TWC during the "blizzard" of Jan-2015, when the GFS was only showing 6-10" from Trenton to NYC, which is roughly how it played out vs. the 18-24" predictions that most other models were showing. TWC was the only outlet that wasn't going for a big blizzard for most of NJ (NWS and almost every other media outlet was) for that storm. I've never quite understood their bias towards the GFS, which has the 3rd or 4th best accuracy scores.

We got about 4 inches up here.

Just threw some steaks on the grill - the thermometer is reading 10 degrees.

They will adjust upwards - almost guarantee it, unless the Euro throws a curveball. Here's the 00Z model summary, with only the GFS showing 1-2" for NYC, while the rest show 3-5" (at 10:1 ratios and we're likely to be 15:1). The GFS is an outlier. Doesn't guarantee we'll get these amounts, but it's the smart way to bet.

1/07 00z Guidance Summary for NYC (numbers are liquid equiv; multiply by 10 to get inches of snow, if a 10:1 ratio; multiply by 15 if we get a 15:1 ratio). And NYC is a good indicator for I95 in general in this case, since distance NW of the storm track is critical here and all of I-95 will be about the same distance from the storm track, which is why Philly to NYC will see fairly similar amounts.

SREF: 0.45
NAM (regular): 0.40- 0.45
GFS: 0.10 - 0.15
RGEM: 0.40 - 0.45
UKMET: 0.40
GGEM: 0.30 - 0.35
EURO: 0.35 - 0.40

Edit - Euro just came in unchanged. Will be very, very surprised if the I-95 corridor counties aren't bumped up from the general 2-4" now to 3-5" by the NWS.

So, I thought the NWS and most local media did pretty well with this storm on Thursday and Friday, By Thursday evening, the NWS and most media I saw were going with a couple of inches along the I-95 corridor (more towards the shore/less to the N/W) and by Friday night, they were upping their projected accumulations a bit as the models were coming in snowier, as per my quoted post above.

However, I was a bit surprised that the NWS didn't go with winter weather advisories for all of the I-95 counties from Trenton to NYC after the 00Z models all came out (all were out at 1 am Saturday). With their 4 am Sat package, they only added Middlesex, Mercer and NYC's 5 boroughs, but not Somerset, Union, Essex, Hudson, Bergen, eastern Passaic and southern Rockland/Westchester. They did add those counties to the advisory list around noon on Saturday, along with Morris and Hunterdon (which didn't quite make sense at the time, as they looked to be too far west to reach 3" - and they didn't), but that seemed way too late to me, given the info they had by 4 am.

However, their decision to extend the warnings to all of South Jersey (had only been Ocean/Atlantic/Cape May), Monmouth, Middlesex, and Queens/Brooklyn around the same time (noon) turned out be a great one. I thought all of those warnings made sense, except for Middlesex, but that turned out to be a great call, too, as much of the county reached 6", as did all of the other counties in the warning area. And not extending the warnings to the Bronx, Manhattan, SI and the Jersey counties bordering the Hudson also worked out well, as they generally were all between 3-6", perfect for advisories...except Manhattan - there's no way Central Park only had 5.1" - whole thread on this on AmericanWx - they had 4.3" at 4 pm and 5.1" at 7 pm and every other station around them had 2" in that timeframe - and LGA had 7".

Anyway, this is what happens when a storm tracks about 25-50 miles NW of where it was expected to (as of Friday morning). That was responsible for most of Central/North Jersey getting 3-6" (and coastal areas getting 6-10") instead of 1-2" and was also the reason the big cities in the south, like Atlanta, Charlotte, and Raleigh ending up on the warm side of the storm (with freezing rain/sleet) instead of the snowy side - in fact, that was one of the best clues for forecasters that this was likely going to be a much snowier storm for our area. Below are snowfall reports from NJ/PA/NY, although reports before 5 pm are probably low (at least N/E of NB) as are any reports from the following morning, as compaction would be about 10%.

the gradient was pretty incredible so I will cut slack to the NWS

Califon 1 inch
Flemington 1.6
Branchburg 3
Hillsborough 3.5
Franklin 5
South Brunswick 5.5
E Brunswick 6.5
Inland shore 7-8 inches.

Yeah, in my email update Friday night (which I didn't post here for some reason, but a few people on this board can verify), I said, "it’s quite possible we go from 1” of snow Allentown, PA, to 10” of snow in Toms River, over a distance of only about 75 miles." Allentown got about 1/2" of snow and Toms River (Lanoka Harbor in the PNS) got 9".

Not the steepest gradient ever, but fairly steep. The steepest I ever recall was 2/5/10, where, simply moving down I-95, here was the progression of snowfall: 0.0" in Central Park, 1/2" in Newark, 1" in Elizabeth, 4" in Rahway, 6" in Metuchen, 8" in New Brunswick, 13" in Trenton, 19" in Mount Holly, 28" in Philly and 30" in Baltimore.

Amazing, especially the 0-28" over the ~90 miles from NYC to Philly, although the 15" difference over 30 miles from Trenton to Philly is even a little more crazy. I think you were on the EasternWx board back then - was the worst round of wailing and gnashing of teeth I've ever seen around a storm, especially from the NYC folks.

For snow lovers, this map says it all...

Also, could be some sleet/freezing rain well NW of the I-95 corridor Tuesday afternoon and evening before the big warm-up - everyone is into the 40s and then 50s by Wednesday. Then, it's generally warm for the next week, except for a short cold shot with precip Saturday night - could be wintry, especially NW of I-95. A long way off though - not worth a thread yet, IMO.

I agree,. the mets busted in your area, I never knew of one profession where they cannot take criticism when they dont get part of their job right....Overall they were great with the forecast but did slip up in your area. but here you have Numbers defending them like crazy instead of just admitting they got it wrong, Go on americanwx and you will find a guy PB GFI who is going to take his ball and hide now that he has been exposed by many posters as arrogant and never admitting he is wrong. DT and JB are others. Its their arrogance, condescending attitude and know it all stuff that is more the issue than them making mistakes which are understandable

PB GFI is definitely prickly and arrogant, but you have to at least admit he was right about last week. He was adamant about the first storm being a modest event and the 2nd storm coming NW (with good meteorological reasoning about the PNA spike and the speed of the southern stream being faster, allowing it to come further west than anticipated) when all the models were NOT showing that a few days before the storm. His forecast for last week's two snowfalls was nearly perfect. He's back, too.
