OT: Eternal Lawn Care Thread

It won’t create any problems putting it down a bit early, you just lose some coverage down the road because once you get it down the effectiveness clock starts ticking. If you have the time now and it’s convenient, no big deal to put it down now.
Please post your thoughts on this product as i',ve always found this brand to be cheap.
So this past Sunday I got the Moss Out down on the area I recovered from the forest, and I also put down the Spectracide along the area between that and the edge of the forest. I'll spread the Spectracide in the area in a week or two when it warms up more. Putting that down was problematic as the wind was gusting very heavily - probably not the best day to do it, but I wanted to get it down.

I have a bag of The Andersons branded Barricade coming on Friday, as well as a 45 pound bag of Flagship (24-0-6, 3% iron) coming Friday as well. That should get me started. Still have a season's worth of N-Ext all natural liquid ferts leftover from last year.

That sounds awesome! I would definitely be interested in helping you lose more money. :)

LMK how to get in touch with you. I looked for a fb page or website but couldn't find anything.
I've been away from the board for a bit, just saw your post we're in Howell, NJ. Not sure where you're located and if it's too much of a hike. Let me know if it's not too far, if not I'll try a private message on location/phone number and what we have with prices.

Np. I'm not far from there. I tried to send a pm once, but it didn't work for me. Maybe you will have better luck.

Only premium members can send PM's - stupid Rivals feature that we have no control over.

Keep us posted on the results. You can buy this on the Home Depot site and I have read mixed reviews about it there in the past.
This is a Agway product smh, I grew up 15 minutes from a old Agway store back in the '80s in Burlington NJ and bought some Agway products about 15 years ago but they didn't work as well as I wanted up in CT forcing me to go back to Scott's. Hopefully being in Delaware with different lawn types i'll get a better result.

There is a Site One Landscaping Store in Delmar if you are close to there

Your putting these both down at the same time? I was reading the iron will enhance the green. My lawn is usually peak green mid June but then fades when it gets really hot in July and August. I did also read that it can cause staining (rust like) on sidewalks?

In the past I put down the spring fertilizer with crabgrass preventer already mixed in, from Scotts or Jonathan Green. This year trying something different and separating the two. I want to split my application of pre-emergent, to get some down "early" and then follow up about a month later with the second half. I can throw down the fertilizer component separately. I'm also looking to spread Prodiamine as a pre-emergent after using Pendimethaline the past 3 or 4 years.

I've used other products containing iron in the past, and they do leave some rust staining, but I'm not that anal about the staining on my sidewalks, and my driveway is blacktop, so whatever. I can always run the leaf blower at a low setting to blow any strays into the edge gap. But the iron does help with greenup, especially coming out of the worst part of summer. A bag of Ironite and my lawn goes right back to green, without extra top growth from adding nitrogen.

Put down the Lesco 30-0-5 with Dimension 0.21% today. Hopefully not to early I saw temps expected to be in the 60's next week. There are a few spots I have to seed so I made sure not to spread it there.

I put Lesco (19-0-7) down this morning. Supposed to hit the 50's most of the coming week and it was not windy today, which can be an issue, so I decided to apply even if a little early. Have plenty leftover for a second application in 3-4 months.

Is there any way to put down some type crab grass preventer and seed at the same time. My dogs have caused some wear spots that need to be reseeded

Yes, you can use Mesotrione (Tenacity) and seed at the same time. Scott’s Starter is a fertilizer with the active ingredient of Mesotrione. So you can use this and seed but it’ll only give you 30 days protection against crab grass and weeds. At 30 days you can reapply or just use Tenacity. Then at 60 days or more you can use a more robust pre-emergent to extent crab grass and other weed protection.

POA Trivialis is back with a vengeance. Not going to make the same mistake as last year, where I firebombed it with RoundUP, and I was left with holes that still remain. My lawn guy (I surrendered) said to ignore it because it is a cool season grass and would go away. I may use a bulb planting too to remove the POA tufts. Have you had any luck with POA elimination?

Great thank you. From what i have seen is that crabgrass on my lawn does not become a problem until later in the season. If I put down my seed this week can i apply the preemergent at 60 days or is that too late?

I bought a bag of Scotts EZ Seed Sun and Shade from Costco already was planning on spreading in the areas that need it.

You could give it a try. Dimension (Dithiopyr) has some post emergent control for immature crab grass so you might be fine. Don’t forget that there may be other weeds germinating soon too. Good luck!

Poa is a genus of several hundred grasses. Some are desirable, such as Kentucky Blue Grass, some are not considered desirable, such as Poa annua and Poa trivialis. Poa trivialis is extremely difficult to control. There is a herbicide called Poacure that is very effective but it is only for use on golf courses and sod farms at this point. I’ve had some limited success with multiple applications of Mesotrione but it’s no guarantee. I dug up several patches last years and did a combination of fessed and sod there. By the way, triv is a cool season grass as is Kentucky Blue grass, fescue, perennial rye, and many others. Triv will thrive in cool and damp areas and brown out in heat but then re-emerge again. So it sort of depends on your level of interest (obsession?). I can’t stand it so I fight the battle but in the end, digging it out or roundup is probably most effective, followed by the Mesotrione. Hopefully Poacure gets approved for residential use but my guess is that is probably a few years away. Sorry I don’t have a fool-proof answer...

I used Tenacity and had to dig out the stubborn areas....it took multiple seasons but i did gen it under control.....I found the best time to hit it with the Tenacity was mid to late August..

In north jersey, should I go with Dimension or Resolute (generic Barricade) for better pre-emergent coverage?

I'm hoping to get it down in the next two weekends if possible. I'm hoping that's a good time and not too late.

Within two weeks shouldn’t be too late. Either product is fine, Barricade lasts a bit longer. Good luck!

What national company is generally the best for us guys too lazy to put down whatever, whenever ? Large yard.

Depends who owns it
I used Lawn Doctor but ended their service

Went back to them about 6 years ago and my lawn has been great since

I have 1.5 acres of mostly lawn

This is my first spring with a sprinkler system. When do people generally start them on a schedule after winter?

I put down Scotts Starter (mesotrione) yesterday and will be over seeding this weekend. So 2 quick questions if you or the other green thumbs know:

1. Since I put Mesotrione down yesterday. Is it okay to lightly aerate the soil before seeding this WE, or does the pre-emergent work only on non-disturbed soil?

2. Do you have an opinion on which is better at 30 days... use tenacity or just reapply the Scott’s Starter? I’m assuming I can’t apply Tenacity now as well.

You don’t want to aerate after applying a pre-emergent because that will break the protective barrier. As far as what to do at 30 days, it sort of depends on your fertility schedule for the year. I’d probably be inclined to just use Tenacity, then a stronger pre-emergent after that (e.g., Dimension, Barricade, etc.)

My sprinkler guy says do not start them until later in the year. Around June

I changed my controller over to a Rachio it is totally the way to go.......I turn it on mid April and let it do it's thing....anyone getting a system, if your installer does not offer a Rachio controller ask for it or take the most cheep controller they offer and sway it out once they are done.....Once you set it up it hooks to the local weather station (assuming you have wifi) and waters when it needs to. Absolutely the way to go

I just got my soil test done, I know my Ph levels are low so I need to lime. We have clay soil so how often should I put lime down? Once a month? Any help with this analysis would be appreciated. FYI I put down my crabgrass on 3-10.

Depending on what kind of Turf/Grass you have it can vary.... Most Turf grass want a PH between 6 and 7....(6 is leaning acidic and 7 is neutral) I would hit it it will lime now and then retest in the fall....If you have a lot of pine trees in the yard you soil can turn more acidic.

Thanks for replying. I have no trees on a acre of clay soil with fescue grass.

I put down some Lesco Stonewall 0.68 pre emergent today. Put down the 2.18 lbs per 1k sq ft. The plan is to overseed in the fall. Hopefully good enough to keep things under control for the spring and most of the summer. Will probably weed and feed in mid to late April and Tenacity through the summer.

Isn't it best to weed & feed in the fall? I'm starting to see some weeds appear and was wondering about using a weed & feed product in late april since I put my crabgrass fert down 3-10.

Seems to be a lot of knowledge on this thread. Does anyone have any thoughts on Sunday Lawn Care subscription service? Seems interesting.

You hit it with fert and pre emergent now then roll with a 6 to 8 week cycle, so up next weed and feed sometime in May then summer feeding July etc.... then best time to seed is the fall.....if not seeding then do fall feeding

Interestingly enough, one of the outcomes of the Moss Out I've actually seen, which is to make the grass greener. There's a distinct difference between where I laid it down and where I didn't. So much so that yesterday I was actually able to apply it to streaks of areas I missed. It does seem to be having an effect on the moss, as that has been turning brown. We'll see what the long term outcome is.

I would love some help with my lawn. A new septic was installed last year and the grass in that area doesn’t look great so I will need to reseed. Also have plenty of bare spots without grass. I probably have an acre total of lawn. I also have crab grass and other weeds whose names I do not know.

Based on this thread, I went ahead and put down LESCO Dimension 0.15%. 18-0-4 today (bought it at SiteOne in Rockaway as some recommended). My plan is to seed in the fall, maybe early September and then do another round of Dimension in late October.

Is the above a good plan? Also what further applications will I need to put down throughout the year? Can someone suggest what products to use and the timing of the applications?

thanks
