OT: Major Winter Storm for Philly-NJ-NYC Area (12-24" very likely) for late Sun (1/31) into Tues (2/2)

Status
Not open for further replies.
Just went for a "JebWalk" - a beautiful night in the snow. Up to 7.0" here in Metuchen as of 2 am and yes, it's still 23F. Snow has been very light the last 20 minutes or so and the radar looks spotty for awhile, so this could be a good time to get a bit of sleep.

Note: the maps below and what many have been talking about are additional snow from 7 am today through the end of the event. Yes, this is a bit lower for areas SW of Trenton, but that wasn't totally unexpected.

So, we didn't get that much overnight while I snoozed. Went from 7.0" at 2 am to 8.5" at 7 am. From what the NWS discussion said, sounds like there was a lull, which was underway when I went to sleep around 2:30 am, plus some sleet/freezing rain fell with the lighter precip. Snowing moderately right now at 28F.

Let's see if we get the 13=14" additional inches my point-and-click forecast says for Metuchen (see graphic below) which would be within the 12-18" the NWS map shows for 7 am through tomorrow for our swath in the map below (and close to the 13" of additional snow shown for nearby New Brunswick) from 7 am until the end, which would give me 21-22" total. I like the "expected snowfall" maps from 7 am this morning through 7 am Weds (with most of it today, obviously), but wish they'd also include a "storm total" graphic.

Edit: after my 7 am measurement, it took me awhile to catch up to the models, the NWS discussions and posts, etc. and I forgot to add, that it's been pouring snow since about 8 am here. About to go out and do our 2nd shovel of the event.

Numbers, when do you think the majority of the snow will be down falling ? I would like to do the majority of clean up in one shot tonight.

Major forecast busting in southern NJ. It's all rain and almost 40 degrees!

The town's Department of Public Works. They plow the roads and keep a running total of the snow fall. They are by far the most accurate guide to how much snow has fallen in Belle Mead and Skillman (especially since they cover the entire town).
Well, they were not even close last night then!

Have 5 inches or so up here in Ramsey. Anything less than 18" is a win.

Adding this before I go out to shovel...

Mesoscale Discussion 0051
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0613 AM CST Mon Feb 01 2021

Areas affected...Northern New Jersey...Far Southeast New York...New
York City

Concerning...Heavy snow

Valid 011213Z - 011815Z

SUMMARY...Moderate to heavy snowfall with rates of 1 to 2 inches per
hour is expected to develop from eastern Pennsylvania eastward
across northern New Jersey, Long Island and far southern New England
this morning.

DISCUSSION...The latest mosaic radar imagery shows an east to west
band of moderate to heavy precipitation forming from eastern
Pennsylvania eastward to south of Long Island. The band is
developing to the north of a deepening surface low, in response to
an increase in isentropic ascent due to the approach of an
upper-level low in the central Appalachians. In addition, increased
low-level flow and strong divergence aloft will aid the continued
development of moderate to heavy precipitation this morning.
Snowfall rates are expected to increase into the 1 to 2 inch per
hour range over the next few hours as the east-to-west band moves
slowly northward across eastern Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey,
far southeast New York, Long Island and far southern New England.
Snowfall rates are forecast to gradually increase through the
morning approaching peak intensity in the early afternoon.

Radar is rocking over Rutgers. Probably sleet mixing in? Anyone have obs in Piscy/New Bruns?

All snow there (my friends just posted on FB in EB and NB) and here in Metuchen. Heaviest snow of the storm. This is clearly 1-2" per hour sstuff right now - let's see how long it lasts.

Raining in Howell. Please tell me it changes back to snow
Looks like we're once again smack dap on that waffling line between rain and snow. Last time we got real lucky with the rain didn't have to do a thing. Unfortunately I think this time we're looking at just enough rain to make this crap as heavy as possible to move as it's now moving back to snow..

Snowing extremely heavily in Newark and has been for an hour. Never stopped all night, but lightened up at times.

Very heavy now.

I don't get the bust talk, as south jersey was always going to be alot of rain

Sleet coming down in Hamilton, central Jersey was supposed to be the sweet spot for this storm. Sadly looking like a BUST like most storms in this area. We will see what the day brings. I have maybe 3-4" on the ground now it seems.

Very true! Why are these forecasts so bad? It is ridiculous how they get southern NJ wrong almost every time.
Maps posted on this board yesterday afternoon had as much as 24 inches for Philly. And I got accused, light heartedly, of whining. Looks like they whiffed big time for round 1. Don't see the afternoon making up for it. Since waking up the only thing we have had has been light sleet. Radar has nothing in Philly. End line of Storm is Wilmington DE.

Depends on what part of South Jersey. If you lived in Vineland, you should have expected a bit of rain and sleet. But based on some of the forecasts, if you lived within 20 miles or so of Philadelphia, they were talking 10-12 inches, which I doubt they are going to get.

A local forecaster during the last storm gave a reason why it's tough to forecast Philly its PA and NJ suburbs. If I recall, it has to do with the topography, etc.

The way things are trending I doubt we get more than another inch, which means we are looking at 4-5 total, for the storm where nearly every model was forcasting close to a foot. They really do blow it every time around here. It's insanity

I recall that forcaster you were talking about. He called into the radio morning show I listen to. It was a very interesting conversation. I wish I could find a video or article about it.

Have you noticed that Millville is always the outlier in far South Jersey? Hottest in the Summer and coldest in the winter. It was explained to me that it was the topography of the town where it is like a bowl. Lower than the surrounding areas.

Just woke up. @RU848789 ain't lying. It's snowing very hard in our area right now. I've got some meetings then will make a first pass on mine and my neighbor's walks and driveways. Usually like to wait it out before starting, but the stuff down now is light and the stuff coming down now and later is likely to be heavier.

Yep, this shows Philly area is definitely mix. It's likely the models overestimated Philly and the surrounding area again. I am sure we'll get the conversion to snow later but I doubt you'll see any of the snow totals some of the models showed. They likely will fall in line with what the NWS in Mt Holly was projecting.

Have you noticed that Millville is always the outlier in far South Jersey? Hottest in the Summer and coldest in the winter. It was explained to me that it was the topography of the town where it is like a bowl. Lower than the surrounding areas.

I have heard that and it seems it would fit in line with what the local meteorologist was saying about overall topography effects in Philly and surrounding areas.

Sleet coming down in Hamilton, central Jersey was supposed to be the sweet spot for this storm. Sadly looking like a BUST like most storms in this area. We will see what the day brings. I have maybe 3-4" on the ground now it seems.
Concur in R-ville.

I've noticed people don't care about the overall storm, or local highs/lows... if they don't get the high end of the predicted amounts in their own driveway, they call it a bust.
Philly won't even come close to the predicted low so I have no clue what the hell you are talking about.
