OT: New York Yankees 2024-2025 Off Season Thread

Honestly if it all falls apart and Soto doesn't come back (which I think is likely), go get Bregman for 3B, shift Jazz to 2B and throw the rest into pitching. The real answer is pay whatever you need to get Soto!

Rizzo gone. Cole opts out. Can come back with a 1 year extension at 36 million. No brainer to bring him back.
The 1 year extension brings him back for a total of 5 more years at $180 million total. Runs through until he is 39.

Cole undid his optout. I guess the Yankees told him that they weren't going to pick it up and he didn't feel confident that he'd get a better offer. Nice move by the Yankees.

There's no reason they couldn't make an extra year added on based on incentives. That would be a win/win for both sides.

Was Ohtani the tipping point? Are players going get what they always demand? We have seen top free agent players in the MLB get no longer term, high paying offers demanded by their agents in recent years. Has Scott Boras been losing his touch?
Cole certainly backed off quick! The market wasn't offering a better deal then the one he already has.

This team needs improved offensive production from catcher, first base, second base, third base, shortstop, and left field. And some bullpen help.

You can easily live with Volpe at SS if you get production elsewhere. But I also think he is better on offense than he showed this year

Does not make sense to pour money into Catcher, SS or 2nd. Wells was a rookie and did well defensively and showed pop. He's only 24 and will likely get better. Pretty much the same for Volpe. You need some youth on controllable contracts. For 2B I would move Chisolm over and backfill 3B. Go after Bregman. I agree that Yanks also need much more production from 1B. For LF I would like to see either Dominguez or Jones get a shot rather than another middling free agent.

Slim pickings via the free agent market. Bregman at 3B and Goldschmidt at 1B would be nice . Jazz to 2B and let Gleyber walk. Do you still go all in for Soto . I hope so . If they do one of Dominguez or Spencer Jones could be traded for some young pitchng.

The weird thing with Soto is that I somehow think the Dodgers are going to find a way to bring him in over there. And he will use the NY teams to drive the price up.

Jones was't exactly tearing it up in the minors this past season. I've read a number of pieces that questioned his bat. Too many strike outs.
Also, do you think New York will take to Bregman, as he was a part of the Cheaters on the Astros ?

Judge wasn't exactly lighting the minors on fire either but he figured it out when the got called up. I still question if the Martian is the ultimate answer to CF. I would trade Jones for an important piece, but that's ti.

If they don't get Soto, they need to get Bregman. They can't not replace his production.

The Yankees got bad news last night.
They haven't won the WS with a Republican in the White House since 1958,dropping their last 5 attempts while going 9-1 for a Democrat being there.

No bad news at all unless you're drinking a lot than it could be bad news soon!
The Mets have won under two Republicans and only twice in 63 years 😂

Apparently the Yankees have opted to bring back Aaron Boone.
They're picking up his option for 2025.

Boone isn't the problem. He goes by the playbook the nerds in the analytics room force feed him. Cashman and the nerds are the entire problem. Strikeouts and lack of fundamental skills is fine with them as long as the Yankees lead the league in home runs.
Back in 1998 when Cashman was elevated to GM but Joe Torre still ran the team, from the dugout and on the field, it was old fashioned baseball. Make your plate appearances count, drive up the pitching count and strike outs were not the equivalent to any other out.

1998 stats
WAR 39.4
PA - 6444
AB - 5643
Hits - 1625
HR - 207
SO - 1013
Avg - .289

2024 stats
WAR 30.3
PA - 6245
AB - 5450
AB - 1352
Hits - 1352
HR - 237
SO - 1326
Avg - .248

So Cashman analytics increased home runs by 30 but destroyed every other offensive category!!

The 98 Yankees had Jeter, Posada, Tino, O'Neill. Knoblauch, Bernie....and Strawberry, Raines, and Chili Davis.
Plus a great starting rotation and Mariano as the closer.
I could have won managing with that talent.

That's my point. Let the players play and stop trying to change the game using a bunch of nerds, who can't play any sports, telling the pros how to play the game! The most powerful people on the Yankees don't even put on a uniform or step on the field!

The crazy thing is- Boone comes from such a baseball knowledge base. I would bet he would be a better manager if he were allowed to actually manage

Boone doesn't have a say in the matter now. It's collecting a huge paycheck and he isn't the only manager taking the paycheck and being told what to do.

I was gonna say something similar as a bunch of teams just pretty much fill out the lineup card for the manager now using analytics and provide percentages to use in the various situations come up. Managers are more motivational now it seems.

Boone, like Girardi were hired to talk to the media, basically that is what their job is.

Baseball is much different today than it was in 98, you can't just go by stats. Judges numbers in 98 he would have finished 3rd in HR and 7th in HR rather than leading the league in both.

A lot was different in 1998, some of it not so good. Most of all the steroids use. Imagine Judge on steroids!!! But that isn't my point.
Do you realize that the difference in total strikeouts between 1998 and 2024 is nearly 10,000!
1998 - 31,000+.
2024 - 41,000+

The players that would have been ahead of him in HR that year would be behind him in 2024.

I'm sure some of that has to do with the pitching. Ever pitcher coming out of pen throws 100. The game changes over time. Some errors are pitching and defense, others are HR's. IMO it's hard to compare today's game to the 90's. How different was the 90's game to the 60's?

And regarding steroids, don't forget the pitchers. Could you imagine how hard these guys would be throwing if they were juiced up also.

There is still a lot of juicing but the big difference is that in 98, starters were still pitching complete games, no one had spin ratios like they do now and the entire game, you are facing 98+ fastballs.

ERAs have been pretty consistent over the years. A few just under 4.00 but most have been low to mid 4.00s so even though more pitchers are throwing at or over 100, hitters have caught up.
You can stick your head in the sand if you wish but there is no denying the players swing changes have become more of an upswing then ever before. It's not a secret, everyone is talking about it. It increases home runs but destroys average and increases strikeouts.
Guys like Paul O'Neill and Don Mattingly (among many others) had exaggerated practice swings showing they were trying to put a downswing on the ball.

New Voice Of The Yankees:

Check out this article from My Central Jersey:

WFAN tabs John Sterling replacement on Yankees radio, reports say:

.

Just listened to some of his calls - Yanks made a great choice. Hey now! Hey now! Hey now!

Used to do mid days on WFAN

The Cole Man and the Soul Man

Boomer and Gio actually mistakenly announced this after the Yankees were eliminated. Old news.
