OT: New York Yankees 2024-2025 Off Season Thread

Dave Sims will be on live - in studio on the Boomer and Gio show coming up next. Most of us are already familiar with Sims but for the younger crowd it's a good spot to get know him.

Yanks better not sign Fat Pete.
There are no team changing LH hitters available now.

They need a 1B and PA seems like he'd be a good teammate.
It's either Alonzo or Bregman, imo.

Unless they can pull off something big in a trade, options are limited.

Unfortunate situation for the Yanks but he clearly didn’t want to be In pinstripes - sounds like the Mets deal was not overwhelmingly better than what the Yanks offered. At this point Yanks need to figure out 1B but spend every penny on pitching.

Soto made this past year fun but that is big money. If they had paid Soto that kind of money the Steinbrenner family would have closed the ATM with no more big signings for many years to come. This team has many holes to fill. Spend big money on value across many positions. Plus put more money in your minor league and draft scouting.
As far him getting the highest sports contract when he isn't the best sports figure, his contract is all about timing. He reached free agency this year at the age of just 26. Plus length of contract.

That's how I would go at this point.
FYI - it seems like the Yanks did a PR offer with Soto (i.e., get close enough to look like you are in the game but not enough to win). Yanks offered $5m less, 16 years instead of 15, and less attractive language around opt outs. Little things like this are silly unless they were hoping to come in a close 2nd.

Not sure if this is good or bad yet. Let's see what happens with B & B.

Yanks get A for effort whether it was PR or not. Reality is Cohen can outspend just about anyone. This will be a problem for the Yanks going forward. Billionaires will be a problem for every team especially when the price of everything related to sports continues to go up. Last couple of times I went to a Yankees game a family of 4 was easily over $1K for decent seats, parking, food, the bridge, etc.

+1
Good seats and a quality experience at the stadium are super expensive nowadays. Might as well just go to 1 game a year but spend money on all the bells and whistles.

My problem is more about time. Getting to Yankee Stadium and back from where I live. No direct route until I hit the NJ Turnpike. Train option is 3 different trains with tons of stops and that only gets to Penn Station so that's really not an option.
I've been a bleacher creature my whole life so those seats aren't that pricey. I haven't purchased food at the new Yankees Stadium. In the beginning it was because of long lines everywhere. Been bringing food to tailgate before and I have never had a problem going 3 hours without food.

I hear you - transportation options suck and driving is a nightmare. Yanks need short distance air transportation to bypass all the hassle. Won’t happen in my lifetime but one day.

I just have a hard time going to the trouble of planning a trip to watch the Yankees and then not eat for 3 hours because a pretzel is $12. IMO, the whole sports fan experience is going downhill fast.

Instead of going to a few games on a tight budget, just buy club tickets and splurge on one game per season. Quality over quantity.

I'll wait to criticize until I see what Plan B is, but with the current lineup, a LH bat is really needed and Soto was a defensive liability and Stanton is the DH for a few more years.

I went with my dad to at least 25 games in 1969.
This was a field level, family seating ticket directly behind home plate.
I know it’s not the Yankees, just showing how crazy things are today compared to then.
5 bucks got me a hotdog, soda and ice cream

I was at the game of Wednesday,June 25th.
Nolan Ryan retired the first 16 Phillies, then hit a batter, got knocked out,and the Mets went on blow a 5-0 lead, losing 6-5 in extras.
They did so with almost all of their regulars being on the DL or on suspension-newly HOF'er,Dick Allen-and went on to a nine game winning streak, showing how good MLB players are-even players such as this, most of whom never played after 1969.

Tons of dead money on the Yanks right now:

Aaron Hicks 10 million (last year)
DJ 15 million (2 years left)
Stroman 18.5 (last year)
Stanton 32 million, 29 million, 25 million (3 years left)
Grisham 5 million ( last year)

We should really be able to hit free agency hard next year depending upon what we do this year.

After avoiding a $750+million contract they should buy out all that's left tomorrow and take the hit and move on.

I think that even if you buy it out, it still impacts the year it was supposed to be in effect. I'm not 100 percent sure though.

I don't think so if you actually pay it up front. Normally you pay on the schedule but it's been expedited before. The buyouts upfront would apply to 2025 salary cap.

Fat Pete’s coming off a down year so $ shouldn’t be crazy. He would get good looks hitting in front of judge

Walker and Alonzo aren't young anymore.

Can't believe they will get a anything longer than 3 years.

Maybe trade for Arenado?

Looks like a rookie at 2B next season:

Speaking at the 2024 MLB Winter Meetings, Cashman said prospect Caleb Durbin is the current favorite to play second base for the Yankees next year, according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic. Cashman also mentioned Jorbit Vivas and Oswald Peraza as candidates who “could surprise” and win the job.

In other words, Torres is finally gone!

Like that better than Soto, honestly.

Can't deal with another post season of Cole and .... oh shit, pencil this a loss.

I've been hearing great things about Durbin since April. I guess he's gonna get a shot...at least in the Spring.
