OT: Snow? - January 15-16?

The mix line and dry patches overnight killed us in Eastern Essex. Still there was legitimate snow on the ground, and still is on some side streets and the grass. It's simply a nuisance though. A few years ago this would be a non-event. Still nice to see the snow though. Hoping for another solid inch or 2 Friday, and still hoping for an actual storm this winter.

Seems we either miss to the south or to the north alot lately.

Also in Southern Hunterdon and I'd say we got 1.5-2 at most. Storm last week was certainly more. Drove for a few minutes and main roads were fine and even my street was but that a couple of hours ago.

Some nice restaurant news for Flemington today as well.

Nice. David Burke was one of my late brother in law’s closest friends, going back to their Hazlet school days.

Took me a while to chip through all of the ice on the windows, but didn't feel like doing it in the morning. Warming up the car enough should do the trick now to get rid of anything tomorrow.

Key question is whether you measured within maybe 20-30 min after the changeover to sleet (which was brief to our SE across the Raritan) and then freezing rain. I had 2.3" before the changeover to sleet, then about 2.2" after ~30-40 min of sleet (which accumulated 0.1", but obviously compressed the overall snow) and within 30 minutes of the changeover to freezing rain, we were down to about 1.8", as the rain is absorbed into the snow pack, changing its internal structure, collapsing and compressing it. We're down to about 1.5" now, despite never going above 30F, as further compression occurred.

Was out and about the past few hours and the residential roads that weren't treated or plowed are pretty icy, while the main local/county roads are mostly ok, but with slushy/icy spots. The major roads I was on (1/287/27) were all just wet and drying out. Was a lot of fun playing disc golf at Oak Ridge Park, too. I went there intending to play and shovel the tees, but someone had already shoveled the tees, which was cool. Also, when I got home, Metuchen had obviously had a bit more snow as there was a new dusting on the ground (didn't get that in Clark). And by the way, waiting until about 2 pm to shovel worked out well - was pretty easy and no ice formed afterwards as precip was so light.

Our roads up here are impassable at two steep switchbacks, due to ice beneath the snow. Did manage to plow some, but now the wind is trying its best to undo that. Our stra-tee-gery is to keep a "town vehicle" down below near the gate entrance. But it's a mile "walk" down to it. We keep chains on a 4wd Tacoma up top and use that as one option to reach the town vehicle, and switcheroo. But the ice-base switchback descents make that too sketchy. The ATV is another option, chains, 4wd. But again, those icy descent options are sketchy. Off the roadside at any point and it's, well, not good. So... it's pretty much a long walk down (crampons, yes) and pulling a jet sled, usually with a garbage bag or two on the descent and then groceries on the return ascent. It is what it is....

I'm sure it happens with other cars but it was a little amusing seeing all the Tesla's at school pickup with frozen rear door handles when the kids were trying to get in.
Those low profile hidden handles don't give a lot of leverage to yank the door open it seems.

The arctic outbreak has been bad for many, but maybe nowhere worse than Eugene Oregon, where they've had major ice storms with up to 1" of ice accretion knocking out power to tens of thousands (Portland has also been hit). There was also a 17-hour I5 delay near there as nobody could move on the skating rink ice. And half of the US deaths (14) have been in Oregon, as per below. I also hadn't heard 2 died on the Parkway in NJ in an accident today.

Among the 14 deaths linked to the weather over the last few days, five people in Oregon died of hypothermia and two were killed by falling trees. A snowmobiler was hit by a truck in Utah, a skier was killed by an avalanche in Wyoming and three people died of suspected hypothermia in Wisconsin. In New Jersey's slippery Garden State Parkway, two people died Tuesday when their SUV collided with a snowplow.

Did not realize David Burke's culinary empire extended that far into the "western" part of NJ. Thought he was only in the Jersey Shore area after he had exited (or at least limited his involvement in) NYC.

We lived across one of his places in Rumson before we moved. Was not thrilled with the place.

D'oh! That's what happens when I don't check something before I post, lol. It was a really good restaurant. Our favorite in Rahway, now, is Irving Inn Social - worth a visit, especially in the summer, as it might have the best al fresco dining in the area, with a beautiful interior brick courtyard lined with all kinds of ivy and plants that makes you feel like you're somewhere in Europe.

Also included the NWS predicted and actual snowfall maps from the event. As we've discussed, the NWS forecasts were spot on until Mt. Holly decided to up their forecasts to 3-5" for folks along/NW of 95 - their earlier call of 2-4" was better.

Had about ~2 inches up by us at 9 AM yesterday morning, pushed it off the driveway with a pair of shovels. Came home to a ¼ inch dusting last night. While at work in Parsippany got snow, rain, sleet, snow and sleet off and on for a good part of the day. Made a mess of the parking lot.
