Snow 1/3-1/4? And continued very cold...

Status
Not open for further replies.
Just got in from shoveling out the car in Tinton Falls. It wasn't too bad. Pretty light. Drifts up to the car windows. But the wind blowing the snow around hitting my face was painful.

Numbers,
I don't know of any news product that does it. Maybe they ask it of the cocohras network? Would be terribly helpful if they did.
They have a map for it, but no data - I think the NWS has it, but it's buried and hard to find if I recall correctly (those sites are often inscrutable, like why do I have to go to "text products" to get the public info statements for snowfall?). Will ask on one of the weather boards...

These weather bums got it wrong again.
Dusting to an inch in west Morris County?

Wrong, storm is much worse than discussed and forecasted.

I don't recall any source saying just a dusting to an inch in western Morris County in the last 36 hours - sure 2-3 days ago it looked like that, but those forecasts changed on Wednesday morning, as per every friggin' post be either me or bac in this thread.

On page 3, I posted the 5 am NWS map from yesterday morning which showed western Morris County in the 2-3" swath (although very close to the 1-2" swath, but nowhere near the <1" zone), as per the linked post below.

https://rutgers.forums.rivals.com/t...ontinued-very-cold.137476/page-3#post-3101621

Then, on page 6, I posted the 4 pm NWS map from yesterday with western Morris County in the middle of the 3-4" swath, as per the linked post below.

https://rutgers.forums.rivals.com/t...ontinued-very-cold.137476/page-6#post-3102749

And all of the chatter and posts from last night's snowier model runs through this morning's maps before the storm started, showed western Morris being right on the edge of the 4-6" and 3-4" swaths. You almost had to be retarded to be reading this thread and thinking you were going to get a dusting to an inch of snow in western Morris. Just stop trolling - you're making T look reasonable, which I didn't think was possible.

Salted the driveway. Just got back in. Damn it's windy and cold. Snow totals here not impressive but coldest I have felt in years. The story for the weekend is polar like wind chills. Dangerous if you plan to be out longer than walking the dog. Brutal.

Close to final report on snowfall from NWS-Philly (first list) and NWS-NYC (2nd list). I dont have time to edit this, so just ignore any reports from before about 1 pm, especially if the report is from north of a line from Philly to Toms River, as the storm didn't end before 2 pm for 90% of this region, meaning reports from before 1 pm are likely not the final tally for that location.

Looks like Brick and Bayville in Ocean County, at 18" each are the winners for the Philly-NJ-NYC region and certainly the winners for the NWS-Philly region (eastern MD, DE, eastern PA and most of NJ). Surprised nobody in Suffolk County had more, although it's still snowing in parts of that county, so they may still have spots with more.

When did "social media" become a official snow total use? And the King of Prussia trained spotter needs more training.

When did "social media" become a official snow total use? And the King of Prussia trained spotter needs more training.

NWS solicits and compiles rain and snow totals via Facebook and Twitter. The totals for any given location are then averaged.

This is the best way to perform the task while, at the same time, staying off your lawn.

no RU#s was very good in this thread
Thanks, as were you. One of the best weather threads we've ever had, I think and while the forecast obviously went through some gyrations, the models finally caught on far enough in advance it wasn't a big surprise, unlike 1/25/2000. By yesterday morning, we knew we were likely to get a significant storm for most and potentially a major storm and the trend all day yesterday was snowier and snowier all the way up to early this morning.

Sure, the storm really overperformed for coastal areas and LI, but warnings for those areas were up for 6" or more yesterday and once you think you're getting maybe 8" and blizzard conditions, getting 12-16" and blizzard conditions isn't a huge change in planning. For the rest of the area from I-95 and westward, yesterday's forecast was pretty solid, even if not perfect.

I am directly across the river from Brick, and we tied Brick at 18".

NWS solicits and compiles rain and snow totals via Facebook and Twitter. The totals for any given location are then averaged.

This is the best way to perform the task while, at the same time, staying off your lawn.
My lawn would be a terrible place to measure. 1/2 of it I can still see grass the other half I'm glad I don't have to shovel. I'm not old enough to complain about people on my lawn, just so they are okay if they might step in a Great Dane pile.

Great info in this thread. Gotta say the RU message board has definitely become my go to when a major weather event nears.

In the future, can we ban the 2 trolls who want nothing more than to have the forecasters be wrong, then thump their own chest like they just accomplished something? What losers.

We shoveled around 7:30, looked like 6inches and change on the driveway, with snow blown against the cars, the garage door, etc. Interestingly enough, it clumped fairly easily, making it heavy to move. Not at all like the light fluffy stuff I was expecting.

My guess is the winds won't be strong enough, except at the coast, for direct wind-driven tree damage and I'm also pretty sure that with temps in the mid/upper 20s at the surface and colder aloft, plus some wind, the snow will not accumulate that much on trees - most of it should just blow off, as opposed to those heavy wet snows that just stick to everything, trees/branches included. So then, when the strongest winds kick in, the trees won't be weighed down by much snow. Pretty sure on this, but not 100%.

Almost no power outages in NJ from today's storm - snow not sticking to trees was, I'm sure, the key to that, as the winds were greater than almost any other coastal snowstorm we've ever had (we had numerous gusts over 50 mph and a few over 60 mph; and Nantucket had a 76 mph gust).

Looks like my writing, lol. I have done an awful lot of research (3 patents) in the field of crystallization of pharmaceutical molecules, which is very similar to snow crystallization and growth (but there are important differences too).
Hey #'s, did you get your PhD in chem/organic chem from RU?

One of the things I love about snow storms is the dig out. Last night was actually quite peaceful and a good workout. All the neighbors were out digging. The area near my garage was down to bare cement, but everywhere else had at least a foot along with as much as 3 foot drifts. I did most of it last night, knowing today was going to be brutally cold, it actually wasn't so bad last night.

RU#s, you would have been in heaven here yesterday. I haven't been up to the beach yet to see how they fared. Maybe today if I get motivated enough.

In Clifton, my snowblower kept clogging up last night. Wasn't sure if it was because of the heavy snow or my snowblower needing some sort of tuneup. Never had that happen before. Wasn't doing a great job throwing snow.

I don't know the Inuit word for the kind of snow we got, but it was definitely different. It was heavy on the ground and chunky going through the snowblower, but if a good gust of wind caught it coming out of the chute it seemed to instantly turn to frozen smoke.

Absolutely! Weird snow - maybe just around here? Others were reporting a lighter snow......

It is still very cold with tonight and tomorrow being just brutal.

Though it seems like things will be back to normal come Tuesday.

lol..thats because no one is talking about....actually its not a big precip maker but one that could bring freezing rain is always potentially more dangerous than just a regular snow

Yep, this shouldn't be anything more than minor as there's simply not much precip with it (0.2", tops), except if it's freezing rain Monday night - only takes a little bit of that to be a problem and we're certainly going to have low level cold air in place, especially with the snowpack. Not worth a thread, IMO until closer, since predicting ZR is very difficult 3 days out.

I think it was because it was all blown and drifting, like compacted until you set it loose and it turned back into powder. We had the same thing here in OCNJ. Finally just finished shoveling the driveway, i have a big pile, 3 foot high by 2 feet wide going down the center since it was too hard to throw in the wind.

As much as the snow only lovers want to push snow fall amounts this cold is record breaking yet not sexy enough for them. Brutal and 2 more days to come. Yet a non story to the single minded.

Just had to run out across the street to get something out of the trunk of a parked car: holy f'in' ice queen batman!

Getting back to the cold, this will be the coldest weekend in quite some time. Lows tonight will be 0-5F in the urban areas and -5 to 0F in the outlying areas. And tomorrow's highs will struggle to reach 10F in most places, followed by the coldest night of the winter with lows Sunday morning below 0F in most locations even in urban areas, except maybe NYC. Lots of record lows both nights and record low minimums on Saturday. On top of all that we have a wind chill advisory in place through Sunday morning for wind chills generally between -5F and -15F - under those conditions, frostbite can occur in under 30 minutes.

We're getting close to record territory with regard to this cold snap, also. For NYC, we're at 11 straight days with temps below 32 F and we'll absolutely get to 13 and possibly 14, if Monday stays below 32F (iffy). 14 would put us in 3rd for that record and 15 is extremely unlikely, as it's supposed to reach 40F on Tuesday. Philly and several other locations in the area are also nearing top 5 streaks of max 32F weather.

Most consecutive days with a max 32 or lower in NYC (from uncle w on the weather boards):

Completely (almost) different topic, but have you discovered windy.com yet? I can't put it down.

50s by late next week but getting through the next two days will be a struggle. Wind chills under zero for everyone around here. -11 Wind chill was immediately felt the very second walking out the door. Wind is crazy. Tonight most real temps will be below zero. Records will fall nearly everywhere. Lowest for Philly in decades.
Frost bite isn't an issue around here normally but it is a serious threat in the next 36 hours. Bundle up.

No, hadn't seen that one, thanks - very slick site - easy to navigate, find things and graphically well-executed. I imagine it's especially useful for pilots and sailors given the wind maps at various levels in the atmosphere. Not sure how well they've done the snowfall maps for the various models, though, as their GFS snowfall map is a bit off what the 6Z GFS is showing out at 8-9 days (a decent snowstorm).
