OT: Big winter storm next weekend (01/22-01/24)?

So what time for the next important model run? I have to update the French Toast Warning Level.

Probably not on most people's radar but I was supposed to make a weekend trip into Southern Brooklyn. How much do I need to worry about flooding? Anyone know? quite a bit it would seem?

The wovel is great for driveways and long walkways. Still need a regular shovel for tight spaces. Definitely worth the money, it has saved me alot of time and physical wear and tear. Let's hope the storm isn't too bad.

I gotta say this coastal flooding scares me far worse than the possibility of snow. If there is as much of a surge as you're saying is possible, we're gonna be facing losses similar to what the surge caused for Sandy. Combine that with brutal cold and any significant accumulation of snow, and this could put a lot of people in harm's way.

This is pretty far off, actually and wouldn't want people to think this is another Sandy, as Sandy's storm surge was 3-5 feet above all previous records (and this storm might end up close to those previous records, at most) in places from LBI to Raritan Bay to NYC. Doesn't mean levels similar to March 1962 or Dec 1992 aren't very serious, but please don't confuse this with Sandy, which was a once in 500-year event with regard to coastal flooding/storm surge. Here's a link to a nice site to look at tidal predictions for the NE US - looks like tides predicted to be 3-4 feet above normal high tides and a couple of feet above the high astronomical tides expected on Saturday.

Friend of mine invented the Wovel. He lives up in Conn. and is living the life of an inventor.

The models are less and less agreement the closer we get. For instance the GEFS ensemble means are more like 4-8 inches areawide. There is one model showing a complete miss. Todays runs of the Euro and GFS loom large. I dont think any met can put out a forecast amount at this time with a shred of confidence
Weather.com still only showing 4-6 inches for central NJ. Add to that, 40+ degree weather on Sun thru Thurs, whatever falls will be gone very quickly and roads will be clear within several hours.

Bac - Any idea when the significant snow will start? We have a Disney on Ice show at the Sun Bank Arena on Sat at 11am.

  1. Anybody who makes decisions based on Weather.com deserves what they get
  2. The "4-6" forecast is a fabricated forecast that allows them to basically split the middle of the current model runs and have room to adjust up or down over the next 24-48 and still claim to be right
  3. Right now, per Mt. Holly, snow will begin late Friday evening and last through the night on Saturday. If the more serious scenarios verify, you're not going to Disney on Ice.
Incidentally, the traditional NAM QPF Bomb just ran and lived up to its reputation.

Once again, T making stuff up or just being out of touch in a feeble attempt to downplay the potential storm. TWC/weather.com forecast is for 12-18" of snow from Philly to Staten Island, including most of Central Jersey, with 8-12" of snow N/W of that line for the rest of North Jersey/NYC/lower Hudson Valley - that kind of snow isn't usually cleared in several hours. And whatever falls will not be "gone" that quickly with highs in the mid/upper 30s Sunday/Monday and low 40s for Tues/Weds, but lows below freezing (meaning melting and black ice, locally) and the low sun angle in mid/late Jan. Yes, 4-6" is possible, but that's not what TWC is predicting.

Tidal/Coastal Flooding: With the strong onshore flow, and a full moon on Saturday, major flooding is anticipated along the coasts of New Jersey and Delaware and moderate to Major Flooding along Delaware Bay. Back bay flooding is also likely in these areas. At this time, no tidal flooding is expected along the Delaware River or Chesapeake Bay.

Guess I'd better cancel my AC trip and move the snowblower to the front of the garage and the lawnmower to the back of the garage tonight! Maybe find my bags of salt as well?

Looking at Weather.com right now, 4-6 in central NJ. And 40 degrees or higher for the next 5 days. Sorry for the bad news.

GFS hits us...but verbatim it appears to be "only" 8-12 inches with the meglo amounts of up to two feet or more confined to parts southwest in PA, MD, VA

Are you loo
Thanks. The French Toast Warning Level is serious business.
So does your beverage selection change with the French Toast differences? What goes with a golden yellow? A nice Belgian Ale....or is that only good with waffles??

If anyone wondered who the jackasses were you see on TV that ignore weather reports & then demand safety personnel risk their lives to save them from Darwining themselves out of the gene pool, well, here's a little insight into the mindset.

Enjoy feeding the Disney beast. Hopefully the performers have better judgement than you.

Your troll post on AmericanWx was deleted ("So general 8-12...looks like the big amounts are off the table."). Why do you do that there and here sometimes? You know one run of one model showing 8-12" amounts 3 days out doesn't take other solutions off the table, especially with the NAM (flawed as it is) showing 16-24" and the Canadian showing 10-15", generally.

Best post in thread. Your sarcasm was way better than my lecturing, lol.

That's a rarity with patents. Over 20 years as a patent attorney, I don't think I have seen anyone make money off of their idea. That's not to say it does not happen, it is just an uphill battle. Cost to get patent on file and allowed can run $10-20K.

So based on what I'm seeing, we should definitely expect a significant storm? (Minor being 1 to 4 inches, Moderate being 5 to 8 inches and Significant being 9 to 15 inches of snow or so, severe being over 15 inches.) I have a Christening to go to at noon on Saturday in Colonia and I'm coming from Bergen County, so I'm guessing that might be out of the cards as it will probably be worse in Woodbridge than in the Paramus area.

Moderate to significant is looking very likely, state-wide, but still almost 3 days away from when the current models started running (7 am), so minor is still a small, but non-zero (5-10%?) possibility if it goes out to sea much more. If people need to decide on cancelling events like that, I'd advise them to wait as late as they can, just in case we have a late shift. But if we get, say 8-14", starting before dawn on Saturday, a noon event in Colonia is going to be a tough drive.

Hey, I have 3 patents and made 3 whole dollars off of them, lol. Honestly, I didn't think my patents (shared with others) were that big of a deal, but as I'm sure you know, in Corporate America, it's all about IP protection/blockng of others...

I'm supposed to go to Heroes and Villains Con Sat and Sunday up at the Meadowlands. I have the VIP package which of course is non-refundable.
Ugh!!!!

If it weren't for Corporate America, I and a lot of others would be shoveling snow with a wovel for a living. Stockpiling of patents and posturing of patent portfolios is part of corporate strategy. End of thread derail/
