OT: New York Mets 2023-2024 Off Season Thread

Here are just some of the free agent relievers still available:

David Robertson
Adam Ottavino
Aaron Loup
Mychal Givens
Brad Hand
Joely Rodriguez
Justin Wilson
Anthony Banda
Sam Coonrod
John Curtiss
Jeff Brigham
Dominic Leone
Denyi Reyes
Steve Nogosek
Thomas Szapucki
Jacob Barnes
Anthony Kay
Daniel Zamora
Wilmer Font

Just throw a dart and see where it lands. How can you go wrong?
Curtiss is actually off the board. Went to Colorado yesterday I believe.

That is a dose of former bad Mets RP reality though.

I don't wish to upset our resident GM Baseball 78. However, it appears more and more likely that we are punting on 2024.

At the start of the Free Agent season, out of the hundreds of available free agents, NBC Sports ranked its Top 111. (Why 111? No clue.) They have since tracked their signings. Listed below are the relief pitchers still available:

43 - Chad Green
52 - Hector Neris
53 - Phil Maton
62 - Ryne Stanek
82 - Liam Hendriks
85 - Wandy Peralta
88 - Jakob Junis
91 - Adam Ottavino
98 - Ryan Brasier
106 - Shintaro Fujinami

Some of the bats still available - in case the Mets are even in the market, which they may or may not be:

6 - Matt Chapman
18 - JD Martinez
23 - Jorge Soler
32 - Justin Turner
56 - Amed Rosario (just thought that was interesting)
58 - Adam Duvall
64 - Brandon Belt
72 - Tommy Pham (!)
73 - Eddie Rosario
75 - Gio Urshela
77 - Carlos Santana
78 - Joey Votto
There are more but I stopped there.

The Mets signings who made the list:

27 - Luis Severino
40 - Sean Manaea
54 - Harrison Bader
110 - Joey Wendle

But we continue to have the team tell us they are not punting in the 2024 season. This will be a competitive team... BS. I'm losing faith in the leadership and I'm starting not to trust anything they say. The organization is starting to look like the Wilpons on steroids.😢

Ready for an absolutely insane Mets stat?

This has to do with the Mets new fourth outfielder, Tyrone Taylor. He has played portions of five MLB seasons.

Total games played - 300
Total innings played - 2155
Total errors committed - 0
Fielding percentage - 1.000

Taylor is the only active player in the majors (minimum 500 innings) to have played errorless ball. Now watch him muff a fly ball on Opening Day.

What does this have to do with the Mets?

Another RP arm off the market. Neris to the Cubs.
1 year, $9M, with a 2025 club option that converts into a player option if he makes 60 appearances in 2024.

I don't love Neris so I am not too disappointed. However, the inventory is thinning.

I'll stick with my prior guess - Peralta and Ottavino.

1 year - $4.5M. Ottavino had previously declined his player option of $6.75M. Most of that was deferred though.

I do recall reading that Ottavino regretted his decision to decline, and would welcome a return to the Mets.

Good call !

Hopefully they can also sign Wandy

I thought Ottavino turned down the player option because he wasn’t happy with the direction of the team for next year ( 2024)!!

I went to high school in NJ with Ottavino’s wife. She’s a jersey girl, makes sense he’d want to stay local.

Thanks, you just did it,lol.

OK- so, let's say we stay where we are except for maybe another BP arm - Let's hope what Marte showed in winter ball, shows up for the season.
What do we have for a lineup on most days
Nimmo - LF
McNeil 2B
Lindor SS
Alonso 1B
Marte RF
Alverez C
Baty/Vientos 3B
Stewart DH
Bader CF

SP - Senga/Quintana/Seve/Manaea/Houser - McGill
Not going to go through the BP but Ottovino/Diaz to close it out

IF - Big IF
Marte is back to 2022 for, Bader can stay healthy and we get anything from 3B/DH - lineup can be pretty good

Senga is the real deal, Seve has a bounce back and Diaz is 2022 form...

This is a solid but not championship team.

Really need either Baty or Vientis to take the next step up and I am not totally sold on Stewart DHing. Still need another bat. Agree that it is a solid most likely better than last years team

Not a lot of depth in SP. One of those top 3 guys goes down for a month, it could get pretty ugly pretty quickly.

Also, not sure how hard it is to bring in a right handed DH.... the Mets haven't been a good offensive team in forever, they really need another RH bat that can hit .260/20/80.

I understand that in 2022 they had a top 5 offense. In 2023 they finished 20th in runs scored. Why does anyone feel that they will be much improved in 2024?

That is a 85-88 win team that sneaks into the postseason. Anything can happen once you're in it.

Not hard at all, there are several good ones out there, if you are willing to pay up. Doesn't look like Cohen is. It was reported that there was only $10M left in the budget, and almost half of that is gone.

I guess $65M in dead money can change your view of the world. The baseball world anyway.

OT but interesting. You know how some on this board have called for the Mets to extend Francisco Alvarez right now? And folks like me have responded, nah, way too early.

Well the Detroit Tigers have gone one better. They have locked up Colt Keith, their #1 prospect (#22 overall) for six years at $28M before he has even played an MLB game. Comes out to a little over $4.5M per year. They have bought out his three pre-arb years and his three arb years.

Why would the Tigers do that, you may ask? Because their real payoff is that they are getting three club option years. THREE! That is unheard of. The club gets no-strings-attached control for years seven through nine, presumably his peak earning years.

The player now has financial security, but at the cost of a shit-ton of foregone upside. If he develops as the Tigers hope, he will easily be the most underpaid player in the game in years 7-9.

Or he could be a bust and be the most overpaid player in years 1-6. Or somewhere in between.

Seems to me young Mr. Keith is betting against himself. But easy for me to say, as no one is offering me $28M.
