Some players age slowly. Others seem to grow old overnight. He was really good the first year. You just never know when players will fall off a cliff.
Uncle Stevie, the best thing that's ever happened to the NY Mets.
I suspect that the Marte that the Mets got in Year 2 of his four year contract, was the Marte that they expected in Year 4 of his four year contract. He was really good the first year. You just never know when players will fall off a cliff.
I would have thought Diaz higher unless closers as a group aren’t high ranking.MLB Network is in the process of announcing their Top 100 players right now. Tonight they announced 61-80. Mets placed three players in that group:
#63 - Kodai Senga
#70 - Brandon Nimmo
#80 - Edwin Diaz
I expect that Lindor and Alonso will be in the 21-40 range.
Part of the low ranking is due to his one-year absence, so he is a bit of a question mark. But you are right, their ranking mechanism undervalues closers. (Or maybe properly values them?) Last year, when he was clearly the best closer in the game, he was only ranked #51.I would have thought Diaz higher unless closers as a group aren’t high ranking.
Quote from Stearns, when asked about the Mets DH situation:According to Andy Martino, the Mets are nowhere near a deal on J D.
Ryan was not an ace in his time with the Mets.just a jog down memory lane- saw something going through "black aces" and it was on Doc.
It made me go though some of the great pitching I have seen over the years. And this is the one area that we, as Mets fans, have had some good ones.
Doc
Seaver
Early Nolan
Koosman
Matlack
Gentry
Cone
deGrom
And many more- as well as those on the mound against us-
But if Doc ha not strayed - And I bet there are a few Met fans on this thread that never saw him pitch in person - and @zappaa who faced him and quite a few other greats- including most mentioned above.
He may be the greatest lost to sports ever. his first 3 years were something I don't know we will ever see again- Guys like Koufax, Gibson, Clemons, Martinez all had better runs
But I am not sure a kid of 19 has ever had as much talent in any sport as he did coming in.
I think Zappa had the highest admiration for this kid's talent.
Even after seeing deGrom's dominance for a few years- I feel Doc was better(imagine if he knew he was only pitching 6 innings a game) not sure anyone would get into the batters box lol
For those that were not old enough for the early mid 80's- see if you can find some old games on youtube or something. For the rest of us - loved him, disappointed by him, but some of the greatest memories in baseball I ever had. Google sept 7th 1984 game to see him at his best. I was in the upper deck 1st base side that day- I am not exaggerating to say that you almost felt fear the stands would collapse.
Anyway- just hoping to just share some fun thoughts. I started in the 60's and he is by far the most incredible baseball talent I have ever seen.
I did say early Nolan- But Doc was actually better then Nolan. Doc had complete control of every pitchRyan was not an ace in his time with the Mets.
RU Baseball loves to let others know when he perceives them to be incorrect!I did say early Nolan- But Doc was actually better then Nolan. Doc had complete control of every pitch
I remember @zappaa making a comment on Doc and just how uninhabitable he really was. And Dale did face some of the best the game has ever seen.RU Baseball loves to let others know when he perceives them to be incorrect!
I definitely put guys like Seaver, Koufax, Gibson on a different pedestal than deGrom for the complete games they threw.I remember @zappaa making a comment on Doc and just how uninhabitable he really was. And Dale did face some of the best the game has ever seen.
deGrom may be close in his big 3-4 years but not sure if comparing 5/6 inning guys is the same as 8/9 inning guys.
Imagine Doc if he knew he was going 6 at most.
Ryan wasn't an ace on the Mets. He became one once he was traded to the Angels. I hated that trade from the beginning. Hard to believe we traded him plus 3 other players for Jim Fregosi.RU Baseball loves to let others know when he perceives them to be incorrect!
If I remember correctly, Fregosi was still in the prime of his career and Ryan had trouble with blisters and his control wasn't good. Still one of the worst trades ever.Ryan wasn't an ace on the Mets. He became one once he was traded to the Angels. I hated that trade from the beginning. Hard to believe we traded him plus 3 other players for Jim Fregosi.
Hard to believe he did this by himself. Also, I'm sure it is done in all sports. Maybe he was just to blatant?Billy Eppler suspended for the entire 2024 season for faking injuries with the Mets.
No but if the Mets owed him money now they don't have to pay.Eppler didn't even have a job for this season anyway did he?
Aaaah . Then that would be a coup for us.No but if the Mets owed him money now they don't have to pay.
I’m drawing a blank on the player but that is exactly what happened.I'm sure they'll still pay. He most certainly took the fall and yes everyone does this. Apparently one of the players wasn't happy about it though and complained to the PA hence they went after him.
Some speculation it was Guillorme because his father made sure comments when Eppler left.I’m drawing a blank on the player but that is exactly what happened.
If it was Guillorme and his pot belly, Eppler should be commended. Some speculation it was Guillorme because his father made sure comments when Eppler left.
Definitely a strong possibilitySome speculation it was Guillorme because his father made sure comments when Eppler left.
It starts already with the IL, crazy. They're probably just waiting to put Mauricio or Peterson on the 60 day which they can do on Wednesday.
Kyle Crick will miss most of camp with a calf strain per Stearns.
I can't remember which NBA player went down with a calf strain in the middle of the game this year. He was out less than 3 weeks. I think the impact for a basketball player use of the calf muscle is more demanding than baseball, yet he made it back on shorter notice. They're probably just waiting to put Mauricio or Peterson on the 60 day which they can do on Wednesday.
