Snow 1/3-1/4? And continued very cold...

Any info on road conditions on 287/78 in Somerset county? My son went in to work this morning in Bridgewater and office is closing early so they are sending him home during the worst part of the storm.

As of 10:30 am, estimating about 3.5", which is another 1" in the last hour, less than I expected with how heavy the snow is falling, but that's what I got. About to head out on an errand. Snowing pretty heavily now and the radar shows the heaviest stuff of the day coming at us.

Just got in from taking our son to the doc for a sinus infection. Local/county roads and Route 1 are treacherous, but nobody's out, so not that big of a deal). As of noon, we have about 5" of snow, which continues our 1" per hour rates since 8:30 am. Looks like we should make 6".

Really thought it looked like more than 1" per hour, but that's what I measured - and in a windy situation like this, I take the average of about a dozen measurements in our fairly quiescent back yard (away from trees and the house), so I don't think I could measure much better. Have been off line for 90 minutes, which I hate during a storm, but I did get a chance to go for a walk and a drive, which was nice, as it's just gorgeous out there. Time to shovel.

I think the issue here is the hype in advance...long term models are trash...I will say that again. The Euro saw a big event for today 8 days away but not the set up like this and then the Euro basically had the lowest amounts of any model until yesterday afternoon...too much uncertainty with models that seem to get worse than better...until yesterday there was no consensus...science has to do better than that or not have waste time and resources on long term models

I agree. But even the short term models seemed to back off last night. NAM inparticular nailed it about 36-60 hours out and then backed off

This thread was not helpful either

How could this thread not Be helpful. Between the usual suspects your presented both sides of the possibilities. I don’t have to go back through the thread to know that. Truth is, even those guys don’t know exactly what’s going to happen

that one nam run was a toss...nam did well in general its going to end up getting much of the area right with the cutoff of banding east of 95 and lesser amounts west of 95

Slowing down here. Going to be on the short end of predicted range. Wind is the story. It' brutal out.

Looks to be slowing down here at work in Summit.
Hoping to work another hour or two, to allow some time hopefully for the roads to get worked on at least a little bit, to try to make the trip home about 13 miles away.

It’s why there is so much fighting in regards to these storms. Until the exact path is known it’s impossible to know where the sharp cutoffs will be. It’s the public’s fault as much as anyone else.

Whenever a major forecasts busts they crucify the meteorologists for creating panic. After a couple big misses last couple years many are afraid to overplay potentials

Also, and I’m out driving around northern Morristown for work today, the roads out here are much worse with the hills even on less snow. The fact there are inches of snow on parts of route 23 in wayne is unacceptable. Perhaps these towns are not hoping for best and preparing for worst, which they should regardless of what public is being told
Agreed, roads were worse than I expected this morning at around 9am, even county roads that are usually in pretty good shape hadn't been touched. I heard on the radio last night that because of the cold and minor snowfalls we've had so far this winter, the trucks weren't out pre-treating as there was already enough salt and sand on the roads. Perhaps they were wrong about that.

Snow slowing down in Bridgewater now. After several hours of moderate to heavy snow and fierce winds. Looks like main event is over in western areas?

Oh and by the way, I found this thread helpful for real-time information, unlike a lot of the stale info you find on the big weather sites and all. Was useful for info ahead of the storm too, as my wife works in a hospital and they have to go in to work, no excuses. So with early morning and late night commutes for the hospital, it really helps to have all the info you can to try to plan when to travel.

how much do you guys have...I think the worst is just about over for you. I think you will see after 2 things really improve in your part if not sooner

Hard to tell with the snow blowing around. Gun to my head I'd guess 3-4 inches

Getting pummeled here in Toms River. Actual amount is at least 9", but have some 2 foot drifts on the front lawn. And the wind is just wicked.

We're getting clobbered here in Howell. Hardest I've seen it snow all day is now happening. Have no idea how much as we have snow drifts well over 2' to areas where it's 10". This is a lot more than I expected. I only thought we'd get 6". But we prepped for this, so all is good. Just have to shovel out to the animals once this stops.

Saying 9-10 Jackson/Freehold border and it's coming down, we are in a great band right now.

This thread is always fantastic.

I assume this is the type of snow you wait until it ends until you deal with it. But don’t want to wait too long until it freezes

If I tried to shovel now it would be useless. We tried once to shovel out the animals by time we got back to the house the snow blew right back into the areas cleared. I was pissed. Just have to wait it out.
