OT: Round 2 Rainstorm 1/12 (not as bad as round 1); Rainstorm 1/9-10 - Major Urban/Stream Flooding, High Winds and Coastal Flooding Likely

Status
Not open for further replies.
Easiest drive in and home ever, because few fans (4000?) and everyone was off the roads. Moderate rain and light winds on the way in, but heavy rain and howling winds (30-40 mph gusts) on the way home. Great win, though - best defensive effort of the year and we scored enough. We still own Indiana - nice "Hoosier Daddy" cheer at the end, lol.

Back to the weather, just saw this list of flood warnings for the NWS-Philly, It's exhaustive and will get worse as the bigger streams and rivers start to flood early tomorrow, especially those in NNJ and SENY that are covered under the NWS-NYC...

It's about 10 pages worth of flood warnings - here's the link to them all (including those for NWS-Philly and NYC).

https://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=PHI&wwa=flood warning

And 1.25-2.5" of rain have already fallen across much of the region as per the radar estimate below, with more to come, as per the radar snapshot, showing the incredible rainfall amounts and high winds coming for 20-30 min for most with that squall line in red - you'll know when it comes through your area...

On the bottom image you see a long thin streak of dark red, that can't be good.

Hellacious ? I’m not seeing that and I‘m close to you and Rutgers . It’s a heavier rain but we have seen much worse.
Raining very heavily and we've had a number of 40-45 mph gusts since I got home and worse weather is on the way with that squall line. That's pretty hellacious in my book as we rarely get gusts over 40 mph inland.

That's the squall line I mentioned - it's not good, representing the worst conditions of the storm for rain and wind.
If you look at the live radar you can see behind the squall line is a parallel streak of green, like it's sucking in the energy behind it as it moves forward. Fascinating shit.

72 mph gust at Island Beach State Park and many others over 60 mph near the coast and over 50 mph inland, as per below from NWS-Philly (haven't seen an update from NWS-NYC yet, but reports of gusts over 65 mph on LI already and the worst is hitting NYC now.

Looks like my main route home from work is gonna be closed come tomorrow:

Thankfully, the heavy rain is just about over in PA and will be over along 95 by 1-2 am, with just some showers through the morning, but mostly dry. Winds will also die down appreciably after 2-3 am, so tomorrow will be fine for most, except for river flooding on streams and rivers that will be cresting anywhere from early tomorrow for the smaller streams to Weds afternoon through Thursday for the larger rivers, like the Passaic and Raritan.

Just checked, up to 3½ inches in the rain gauge as of now. And the temperature keeps going up, currently at 50°.

NJ rainfall so far...storm overperforming a bit for many, especially towards the coast which was supposed to get less than along/NW of 95...

Pretty much done here in South Monmouth. Very meh, as measured by only 2 downed wire calls for Fire Dept. 10:30 to 11:30 p.m. was height of wind and rain, just drove back home and things are calm now, will check the rain gauge in the morning.

Just got power back thankfully. Checked on sump pump 10 minutes after we lost power. Water was to the top. Must of went up and down basement steps 75 times with 5 gallon buckets full of water. Sucked.
Same here, and not a moment too soon! I've spent the past 3 hours bailing out my sump pit but couldn't keep up. Finished basement was a goner...I needed a miracle and I got it 😥

Rainfall was a touch under 3" in Sea Girt. Yup, winds topped out at 57mph around 10:30 and stayed close to that for a while. Never lost power which surprised me.

The regular spots should see moderate tidal flooding around 6am-8am.

Yeah it was horrible. I do have a gen but I didn’t even have time to fuel it up and add oil. That’s how fast the sump was filling up. I gotta get a better plan for next time.

Patio furniture tipped all over the place and the ones still upright had water several inches deep on them. One school is on a 2 hour delay opening for power loss and another for backed up drain flooding. Western Monmouth County.

Given the 2-3.5" of rain that fell region-wide with this storm (graphic below), river/stream flooding was always the biggest risk from this storm. Here are the rivers forecast to reach major flood stage: Saddle River at Lodi cresting now at about 1' above major flood stage, Pompton River at Pompton Plains crests this evening about 2' above major flood stage, the Passaic River at Pine Brook crests about 1/2' above major flood stage early Thursday morning, and the Passaic River at Little Falls crests about 1' above major flood stage Thursday evening.

Fortunately, the various Raritan River locations are only forecast to reach moderate flood stage at various times today, although the river at Manville and Bound Brook is forecast to almost reach major flood stage and the South Branch at Stanton just crested at the border between moderate and major flood stage. Also, the Ramapo River in Mahway is forecast to crest at moderate flood stage later today.

All of these are detailed at the link below, where one can click on the dots on the map to get the hour by hour flood levels in the hydrographs. Be careful near these rivers, obviously.

Been there and it sucks - glad you were able to get by. Back during Irene and earlier storms, we used to get basement flooding from poor drainage at the back of our house, stemming from clogged gutters, leading to water collecting in our window wells and coming in through the windows which were not water tight. It wasn't from high groundwater levels, per se. Several times I'd be pumping water from our French drain out and praying we didn't lose power. Since then we now get the gutters cleaned regularly and we got better basement windows and haven't had any water getting into the French drain.

206 at Hillsborough / Somerville border closed. South Branch section closed also. Looks like no way in or out of Hillsborough again. Meanwhile the Hillsborough Deli is open.

Stayed up mid night to keep eye on basement - nothing flooded by then, county road that runs over brook about 100 yards from the house was still open. Spent my time enjoying RU and Indiana message boards. Woke up about 3 am, county road was closed but nothing in basement, Still a big pool of water in the low area of the back yard, detached garage probably got water but house escaped- whew!

Looking ahead to the rain expected Friday night into early Saturday from the next storm, we're "only" forecast to get 1-1.5" region-wide (with up to 2" locally) and given a few dry days before then for drainage, it's likely that flooding from this storm will be less than for this past one, but some minor to moderate flooding is still possible. We'll also have some high wind gusts, although not quite as high as this past storm (40-50 mph looking likely).

Also, the snow threat for next Tuesday is looking less likely, but still possible.

We had just over 5" three miles west of you. I was surprised by that amount.

We have one of those test tube rain gauges that looks something like this:

Not really .. acting like this was a major catastrophe . Think about that. It was a nor’easter and over the years we have been through many of them. Numbers sorry we have many times had winds 40-50 during storms like this. You are overly melodramatic . You went to the game. You saw a win . You arrived safe at home. That is what matters.

For all those who had to manually bail out their sump pumps, you really need to get a gas powered generator. I know its expensive but it was the best investment I've ever made. We have 2 sump pumps covering our basement which sits over a high level of ground water (we have well water in my area). Every time the power goes and the Generac turns on a few seconds later, I thank my lucky stars that we purchased it. We've been through a few basement floods (concrete slabs, no carpeting or anything of value getting wet) and now I sleep comfortably during these storms.

Just got a similar gauge installed last week
Measured 5.5 inches in the Montclair heights section of Clifton
I'm a little bit in disbelief on our reading. It's in a reasonable location (not under roof runoff, ha, ha), but maybe there is a magnetic thingy on the bottom of the glass tube that is drawing rain into the test tube. Ha, ha-- @RU848789 -it works this way right? 😜

But looking at the numbers @knightfan7 posted and the list posted by @bac2therac ,there is not a single reading close to 5 inches. Maybe we will move our gauge to a different location for the Friday storm to see.

Yeah, we did that after Sandy. Like others we lost power during Sandy for 8-10 days, and it got pretty cold. We were heating a portion of our home with a wood stove. We moved, and installed a wood stove at the new home, but we also installed a generator at the new home. Very wise decision. We never haveto worry about heat and the sump pump.

Perhaps. A friend in Brielle not far from the police station measured 2.5"
